Mustangs split with
Pine Eagle
By Rick Paullui
The Heppner Mustang girls’
softball team split with the Pine
Eagle Spartans in their final East
ern Oregon League games of the
season, rallying to win the first
game, 8-7, and dropping the sec
ond, 6-5. The Mustangs finished
in second place with a 9-3 record
in the EOL and an 11-12 overall
record.
The Mustangs will face the Pi
lot Rock Rockets in the second
game of the district tournament on
Saturday, May 20, in LaGrande.
The first game betw een
Wahtonka and Nyssa starts at
noon, with the second game to
begin 30 minutes after the comple
tion of the first.
The Mustangs swept the Rock
ets in the regular season, but Pilot
Rock was missing their best
pitcher. A win by the Mustangs
sends them to the state tournament
for the first time since the softball
program was started.
In the first game, the Mustangs
struck first in the bottom of the
first as Jesse Gutierrez doubled
and came around to score on
Shelley Rietmann’s single.
The Mustangs added a run in
the second as Miranda McElligott
reached on an error and later
scored on another error to make
it 2-1.
In the third, SanJuanita
Elguezabal walked, went to sec
ond on Rietmann’s single and
scored on Leah Denton’s single.
The Spartans came back to
stake a 4-3 lead in the fourth, but
ihe Mustangs came back to tie as
M anssa McCabe singled and
came around to score on
Elguezabal’s double.
The Mustangs scored three
more in the sixth as Gutierrez led
off with a single and came home
on McCabe’s double. Elguezabal
was hit by a pitch and Jenni Patton
walked to load the bases. Denton
singled to score McCabe and
Elguezabal to make it 7-4.
The Spartans came back to tie,
however, in the top half of the sev
enth to s e t upna>iwildi<finisbt>i.
Gutierrez wlriked w ithtw o outs
and came all the way around to
score the winning run as McCabe
tripled to give the Mustangs the
win.
McCabe ended up going 3-5
with two RBIs, with a single,
double and triple, and scoring
twice. Gutierrez went 2-2 and
scored three times. Denton went
2-4 with three RBIs. Elguezabal
went 1-1 with an RBI and scored
two runs. Rietmann went 2-4 with
an RBI and went the distance on
the mound to pick up the win.
In game two, the Mustangs
picked up a run in the second as
Patton walked and scored on a
Rietmann double.
In the third inning, Elguezabal
was hit by a pitch and Patton
reached on a fielder’s choice.
Rietmann scored Elguezabal with
a single and Patton came home
on Denton’s single.
The Spartans came back to
take the lead with two runs in the
fourth and three more in the sixth.
The Spartans held a 6-3 lead
going into the bottom of the sev
enth before the Mustangs tried to
rally. With one out, Denton and
Charissa Gates walked and were
moved to second and third on a
sacrifice fly bunt by Nicole Sisk.
Jesse Kempas then doubled down
the left field line to score two and
went to third as the ball got by the
left fielder. But the rally ended
there as Gutierrez hit a fly ball to
deep centerfield that was caught
for the third out.
Rietmann went 2*3 with a
double and two RBIs. Denton
went 1-3 with an RBI. Kempas
had a two-RBI double and Patton
scored twice.
