Items of Health - Tobacco Prevention by Karen Masshoff
Hello folks. I didn't leave, but I am saying farewell to two friends
of Tobacco Prevention: Marilyn Bader-Nesse and David Phillips
who will be leaving Morrow County. My best wishes go with you.
Marilyn and David, atong with Fran and" Ray Greenlaw and Dr.
Kenneth' Wenberg, compose a group o f people interested in
tobacco prevention issues who have begun to meet to discuss
community activities for the coming fiscal year. We will continue
to meet; the next time will be Wednesday, May 10, at 4 p.m. in the
Extension conference room. Come join us. We want your input,
and you don’t necessarily need to be a non-smoker.
I view the "Tobacco Coalition" group as having three main
functions: to meet several times soon to brainstorm ideas to update
the tobacco prevention/education grant. The grant includes such
general topics as: Creating Tobacco-Free Environments, Reducing
Youth Access, Decreasing Advertising and Promotion to Children
and Promoting Linkage to Cessation Resources. The other two
functions are to serve as a communications link to the community
as a whole (friends telling friends) regarding tobacco news. Then
finally, to serve as an activities support group. I respect the fact
that we all live very busy lives and so any extra hour directed
toward helping our community in this manner will be greatly
appreciated.

Dear Heppner and M orrow
County residents:
I am about to leave Eastern
Oregon for a position in Washing
ton State. I have been very fortu
nate to find a new career where I
can continue to use my education
and work knowledge to the best
of my abilities. I look forward to
the challenges of being a manager
o f two programs dealing with
youth and families. I would like to
say that during these past 5 '/ j
years, I have come to know many
folks here for which I highly ad
mire and want to extend a per
sonal Thank You for your help in
getting me over the rough spots,
especially these past 2 /i years. I
would like to hope that in some
small way I gave back to this com
munity and these special people;
you are and will always be in my
thoughts and prayers.
When I first came to this com
munity, I immediately took a great
liking to it as it reminded me of a
time and place where I grew up.
Such diamonds are getting harder
and harder to find. I found this
area to be one o f my favorites
among the past 12 different com
munities that I have lived in these
past 30+ years. I do believe that
no matter what kind o f commu
nity one lives in, it will only be as
good as the person puts an effort
in to making it.
In reading a book this past
week called, “Ten Things To Do
Before You Die,” it talks to choos
ing one’s fights and taking a stand
on issues that matter. This is truly
important for in our current soci
ety, as it has become a habit to
look the other way, don’t question,
“it doesn’t concern me” kind of
thinking. I believe that everything
we do has an impact one way or
another; it may not be seen right
away, but it eventually comes. We
all are role models for our broth
ers, sisters, children, neighbors,
etc. Not willing to stand up for
one’s convictions based upon ethi
cal and moral values weakens the
infrastructure of our society and
the human race, and it also has
the tendency to make God mad.
The Higher Power, Supreme Be
ing, whoever you wish to call Him/
Her’s greatest gift to us is life and
each and every one o f us human
beings is life. We are here to help
each other on our learning jour
neys.
For those dear friends of mine,
please remember “my house is
your house.” My address will be
2902 Victor St., Bellingham, WA
98225.
