lone men, women
beat Riverside
lone tennis teams fall
to Sherman Co.
The lone High School tennis
teams traveled to Boardman on
Monday, April 24, to compete
against Riverside High School.
Both teams walked away the
victors, with the women
winning three of five matches
and the men winning four of
seven matches.
In singles' action, Caitlin
Orem defeated Andrea Orcutt,
8-3. Salli McElligott was
defeated by Crystal Smith, 2-6.
Sheena Christman defeated
Becki MacNamee, 6-2.
The doubles' team of Erin
Crowell and Caitlin Orem fell
to Chnssa Chapman and
Ashley Howell, 4-8. Allison
Halvorsen and Shelby Krebs
defeated Jami Moore and
Debra Darrow, 8-0.
Jeremy
Rietmann was
defeated by Chuy Martinez, 2-
8. Derek Campbell lost to
Shawn McKimmey, 0-6, and
Aaron Tworek posted a win
against Aset Bektasov, 6-4.
In doubles, Cameron Krebs
and David Mansfeld defeated
Craig Gribble and Jeremy Hall,
8-5. Adam McCabe and Adam
Neiffer defeated Eric Roa and
Matt Weseman, 8-4. Jeremiah

Carey and Pedro Pacheko, 8-4.
Steve Crum and Karl Morgan
fell to Tyson Carey and Aset

The lone tennis teams hosted
Sherman County on Friday,
April 28. Sherman County
made a clean sweep, winning
all seven of the matches. lone
girls were able to post two
wins out of six matches for the
squad.
In girls singles' action,
freshman Caitlin Orem was
able to get four games on her
opponent, Marcy Richelderfer,
before falling, 4-8. Salli
McElligott gave Elama Adams
a run for the money but was
defeated in a tight match, 7-9.
Sheena Christman posted a win
against her adversary, Amber
Ament,
8-6.
Samantha
Wilhelm was defeated by
Frankie Welk, 0-6.
The doubles' team of Erin
Crowell and Molly Barrow
easily defeated their rivals,
Katie Ketchum and April
Olsen, 8-4. Shelby Krebs and
Allison Halvorsen were unable
to secure a win against Codie

The lone tennis teams hosted
Arlington and Helix in a three
way meet on Tuesday, April
25.
Helix walked away with two
wins, Arlington posted one win
and the lone squad declared
five wins.
Jared Mitchell defeated
4 Jeremy Rietmann, 8-0. Derek
Campbell was unable to secure
a win against Ben Schwarz,
losing his match, 3-8. Aaron
Tworek easily defeated Joey
Markgraf, 8-2.
The doubles team of Adam
Neiffer and Adam McCabe
defeated Joey Markgraf and
Ben Schwarz, 8-4. Cameron
Krebs and David Mansfeld
gave a bold effort before
falling to Ben Schwarz and
Tom Tutjeson, 5-8. Karl
Morgan

defeated
Markgraff-Paliana, 8-5.
Salli McElligott and Sheena
Christman both defeated their
opponent, Paulina Paliana, 8-1,
in separate singles matches.

The Heppner Mustang
softball team made the long trip
back to Nyssa to make up a
rained out game and lost 3-0 to
the Bulldogs in a six inning ram-
shortened game.
The Mustangs out-hit the
Bulldogs three to one, but
couldn't come up with any runs.
Leah Denton, Jesse
Stroud and Frankie Welk,
losing 5-8.
In the men's brackets, Jeremy
Rietmann gave a valiant fight
before losing to Cole Shelton,
4-8. Derek Campbell was
unable to post a win against
Shilo Langston, losing 1-8.
Freshman Aaron Tworek had a
difficult
time
competing
against a more experienced,
Trent Eakin. Tworek was able
to nab three games before
falling 3-8 against Eakin. Karl
Morgan was defeated by Shilo
Langston, 1-6.
The doubles duo of Adam
McCabe and Adam Neiffer lost
to Brandon Welk and Trent
Eakin, 3-8. Cameron Krebs
and David Mansfeld also
posted three games before
falling to Welk-Eakin, 3-8.
The menace duo of McElligott
X2 (Jeremiah and Colin) took
four games before losing to
Shilo Langston and Brandon
Welk, 4-8.

The Heppner Mustang
softball team traveled to Athena
on Saturday, April 29, and swept
the Weston-McEwen TigerScots
12-0 in five innings, and 10-3.
The wins moved the Mustangs'
Eastern Oregon League record to
6 and 2 and their overall record
to 8 and 9.
The Mustangs got on the
board early as Nikki Sisk led off
by reaching on an error and
1 scoring on a Jesse Gutierrez
double.
Gutierrez scored as
Jenny Patton reached on an error
and the Mustangs led 2-0.
The Mustangs put nine
runs on the board in the third

without getting a hit as the
TigerScots had 10 walks and an
error.
Patton walked and came
around to score on a Shelley
Rietmann
double
as the
Mustangs added one more run in
the fifth.
Gutierrez went 2 for 3
with a double and two RBI and
Rietmann went 1 for 1 with three
walks with a double and two
RBI. San Juanita Elguezabal had
two walks and scored twice and
Sisk walked twice and scored
twice. Charissa Gates had the
other hit for the Mustangs and
walked three times.
In the nightcap, the
Mustangs were down 1-0 going
into the top of the third when
Alecia Geer reached on a
fielder's choice and came around

had singles for the Mustangs.
Shelley Rietmann pitched a one-
hitter, striking out five and
walking just two, but the
Mustangs were hurt with six
errors.

Give an everlasting
It wasn't pretty, but the
Heppner Mustangs won both
games of a Columbia Basin
Conference doubleheader over
the Weston-McEwen TigerScots,
3-0 and 8-3, in Athena on
Saturday, April 29. The wins
moved the Mustangs into second
place with a 3 and 2 in the CBC
east division and 9 and 8 overall.
The Mustangs are at
Stanfield for a non-league
doubleheader on Saturday, May
5, and then go back to Stanfield
for a league game on Tuesday,
May 9.
In the first game, Stefan
Matheny led off by getting on
first on an error, Nick Anthony
singled and Michael McCabe
walked to load the bases. Kelly
Paullus hit into a fielder's choice
to score Matheny and the
Mustangs had an early 1-0 lead.
In the third, Anthony
singled, McCabe hit into a
fielder's choice and stole second.
Paullus then singled to score
McCabe and the Mustangs led 2-
0.
The Mustangs added
another run in the seventh as
Paullus tripled and Josh Hill laid
down a perfect bunt to squeeze
him home.
Dylan Pettyjohn pitched
four innings on no-hit ball,
striking out seven.
Travis
Bellamy pitched three innings,
allowing just an infield single to
pick up the save.
Paullus went 3 for 4 with
a triple and two RBI and
Anthony went 2 for 2. Bellamy
went 2 for 3.
Matheny led off the
second game by bouncing a ball
over the fence in left-centerfield
for a ground-rule double. Paullus
then singled to score Matheny.
The TigerScots came
back with three runs in the
bottom of the first to take a 3-1
lead.
In the top of the third,
Matheny hit his first career home
run to left field to narrow the
lead to 3-2, - w w w t
The Mustangs came up
with five runs in the fourth as
Paullus and Allan Gribskov
reached on errors and Hill
The Mustangs broke the
tie in the fourth, scoring six runs
with two outs as Patton singled
and Rietmann and Leah Denton
reached on fielder's choices.
Gates had an RBI single, Geer
reached on an error to score
Rietmann
and
Miranda
McElligott reached on an error to
score Denton and Gates.
Gutierrez singled to score Geer
and Marissa McCabe singled to
score McElligott.
The TigerScots got to
within 7-3 in the fourth but the
Mustangs got some breathing
room in the seventh, adding three
more runs. Gutierrez singled,
McCabe reached on an error and
Patton walked to load the bases.
Rietmann then doubled to deep
left field to clear the bases and
give the Mustangs a 10-3 lead.
Gutierrez went 3 for 3
with two RBI and Rietmann went
2 for 4 with three RBI. Patton
went 1 for 2 and scored twice,
Gates went 2 fbr 4 with and RBI.
Rietmann went the
distance in both games, allowing
just six hits, while striking out
four with no walks.

honors, placing first among all
tennis teams in Oregon with a
3.91 GPA.
This is the second time in
three years the lone tennis
team has captured the first
place finish for the spring

A seven-run sixth inning
lifted the Pilot Rock Rockets
over the visiting Heppner
Mustangs, 12-6, in a Columbia
Basin Conference game on
Tuesday, April 25.
The Mustangs had taken
a 6-5 lead on Allan Gnbskov's
first home run of the season in
the fifth inning before the
Rockets’ rally.
The Rockets took a 1
-0 lead in the first but the
Mustangs came back with four
runs in the top of the second.
Stanley Cutsforth led off with a
double, Kelly Paullus was hit by
a pitch and Gribskov walked to
load the bases. Josh Hill lined a
double down the right field line
to score two and Mark
McElligott reached on an eiTor to

The Heppner Mustangs
softball team dropped a non
league game to the visiting Mac-
Hi Pioneers, 4-1, on Saturday,
April 22.
The Pioneers took a 4-0
lead into the bottom of the
seventh before the Mustangs
could get on the board.
Jenni Patton doubled and
came around to score as Shelley
Rietmann grounded out.
Rietmann,
Miranda
McElligott and Alecia Geer
singled for the Mustangs' other
hits.

lone has consistently placed
in the top 10 academically
since the inception of the
award three years ago. lone is
not the only Morrow County
School in the top 10. The
Heppner High School boys
track team placed sixth with a
GPA of 3.39.
Heppner loses to Pilot Rock
walked to load the bases. Zac
Fabian then laid down a bunt to
squeeze Paullus home and
Gribskov came home as the ball
got away from the first baseman.
Gribskov came home as Mark
McElligott reached on an error
and Matheny walked, Anthony
reached on a fielder's choice and
McCabe hit a two RBI single.
Stanley Cutsforth drove in the
fifth run with a single and the
Mustangs led 7-3.
In the sixth, McElligott
singled, stole second and came
home as Anthony grounded out.
McCabe and Matheny
each had six strike-outs as
Matheny picked up the win.
Matheny went 2 for 3
with a double and home run and
scored three runs. McCabe had a
two RBI single and Paullus and
Cutsforth each had RBI singles.
