By Pennie Miller, PMH&N
Joy Wells has been
selected
as the Pioneer
Memorial
Nursing
Home
resident for the month o f April.
Joy was bom July 17,
1939, in Green Bay, Wisconsin,
to Donald and Alberta Uphill.
She was the first of two children;
11 months later she had a baby
sister, Donna.
Joy grew up in Green
Bay, Wisconsin. She went to
grade school at St. Peter and Paul
and high school at East Heights.
To earn spending money
to buy clothes, Joy cleaned house
and baby sat. She enjoyed ice
skating and roller skating and on
Sundays went to the movies.
When they could go out during
the week she liked to go to the
drive-in-movies, which, at the
time, cost $1 for a car load.
After high school Joy
got a job in a laundry/dry-
cleanmg shop in Green Bay. She
worked there for about a year and
a half before meeting her future
husband, Harold Delveaux. They
were married on December 31,
1958, at St. Peter and Paul
Cdtholic Church.
Harold was in the Army
at the time, so they moved to
Texas. On July 3,1959, they had

parking lot from 1-4 p.m.
Those wishing to participate
should
drive
through the
inspection area and local trained
volunteers will check how the
child's car seat in the vehicle is
being used. A certified technician
will oversee the event.
The clinic is free and no
registration is required.
A clinic will also be held on
Friday, May 5, at the Mam and
Frazier parking lot in Pendleton;
and on Sunday, May 7, at the

Hospital
parking
lot
in
Hermiston.
According to a MCHD press
release, "Reader's Digest" has
cited some alarming results from
observing safety-seat checkups in
five states late last year. In
checking about 350 seats,
certified child passenger safety
technicians found that 97 percent
were installed incorrectly. On
average, each seat showed three
to four installation errors. In a
crash, the children in these seats
would be at potential risk of
injury or worse

CARD OF THANKS
The Heppner DayCare, Inc.
was astonished at the sight of
people attending the St. Patrick’s
events. Fortunate enough for us,
we raised a balance o f $700 to
keep. The mini-camival looks like
a carry-over for years to come.
We can add on each year and be
as happy as we were this year.
To the volunteers who spent an
hour to 10 hours o f their time help
ing us raise money for the Center
and children of their community,
we repeatedly say Thank You
over and over again. 1 was over
whelmed at the many people who
took over and organized such an
exciting event on a gloomy day.
A big thank you to Sue Thomp
son and Kay Fowler who got
things on the go. Putting it on pa
per makes it easier for the staff
and I. (In color) Sue, thanks for
organizing the prizes and most o f
all, the time you, Brian and Emily
spent working the trailer and pre
paring and cleaning up. I said,
“Ahhh!” Kay and Dave Fowler,
thanks for setting up the face
painting booth and your volun
teered hours that rainy day; not
the weather we particularly en
joyed, but your company was. Kim
Armato, the dedication you have
for the Center is immense. You
and my staff are the core that
makes us what we are. Thanks
for the countless hours you give
and never stop giving. I’m glad
you guys are on my side. (She
made me say all this.) To Patti Rill,
if I had it all to do over again, I
would have made things different
for us in high school. I wouldn’t
have made this last year without
you. It’s rare to find the friend
ship we have. Thanks for helping
make the Center what it is today.
Through tears o f sorrow and joy
we will always be faithful to the
children in our community. Thanks
for the hours your graciously gave
on such a busy day.
