Mustang girls lose to
Mustang girls drop first game to Santiam

The Heppner Mustang
girls opened the OSAA State 2A

Santiam Wolverines 45-29 on
Tuesday, Feb. 29. The cold

The Westem-Mennemte
Pioneers ended the Heppner
Mustang boys' very successful
season with a 50-46 win at the
OSAA Sate 2A Tournament on
Wednesday, March 1.
The
Mustangs ended their season
with a 16-12 record. The game
was the final one for the
Mustangs' lone senior, Clint
Bellamy.
Joe Papineau got the
Mustangs going by hitting a short
jumper and they built their lead
to 7-3 on a Ryan Matteson
inbounds shot, a Stefan Matheny
jumper and a Papineau free
throw. Bellamy scored on a nice
pass from Craig Scott to make it
9-5 and a Michael McCabe drive
and lay-m made it 11-7.
Matteson hit a three-pointer to
make it 14-9 and Matheny hit a
three-pointer with about 10
seconds left to make it 17-13, but
the Pioneers came down and
scored with three seconds left,
then stole the inbounds pass and
hit a long three-pointer at the
buzzer to take an 18-17 lead.
The pioneer ran their
lead but Matteson and Brian Rust
hit a long three-pointers to give
the Mustangs a short-live 23-22
lead. Rust hit a running jumper
at the end of the first half to get
the Mustangs within 27-25 at,the
break.
Matheny opened the
third quarter with a great move
for a short jumper, then Blake
Knowles scored on a rebound
basket to give the Mustangs a 29-
27 lead. The Pioneers came back
with a three-pointer and a three-

33-31, Matheny hit a three-
pointer to end the third quarter,
giving the Mustangs a 34-33
lead.
Matheny then hit a
running jumper to open the
fourth and Knowles hit a three-
pointer to give the Mustangs a
39-35 lead. The Pioneers came
back to take a 40-39 lead but
McCabe hit a running jumper
with 3:00 left to give the
Mustangs back the lead.
McCabe hit one of two free
throws to tie it at 42-42 then
Matheny hit a running jumper to
tie it again with 1:29 left. The
Pioneers hit four straight free
throws but Matheny hit a jumper
with :20 left to get the Mustangs
to within 48-46.
The Mustangs had a couple
more chances down the stretch
but couldn't capitalize and the
Pioneers hit a couple more free
throws for the final margin.
Matheny hit 7 of 13 and
finished with 16 points to lead
the Mustangs. Matteson finished
with eight points, six rebounds,
two steals and an assist and
Knowles had five points and six
rebounds.
McCabe had five
points, one steal and an assist and
Papineau had six rebounds.

back to increase their lead to 38-

with 1:28 left but the Wolverines
hit a three-pointer to put the
game away. Papineau hit another
shot but Santiam made four free
throws at the end for the final
margin.

The Heppner Mustang
boys went up against a tall
Oakridge Warrior team in the
first round of the OSAA State
Class 2A Tournament and came
up short, 59-51, on Tuesday, Feb.
29. The Mustangs fell behind by
seven after one and could never
get closer than three the rest of
the way.
Joe Papineau hit a
jumper from the free throw line
to make it 5-2 early in the first
but the Warriors went on an 8-1
run before Michael McCabe hit
two free throws to cut the lead to
13-5. A Warrior three-pointer
was countered by a Papineau
jumper, then Papineau hit a short
turnaround jumper at the buzzer
to get the Mustangs within 16-9
after one.
Stefan Matheny drove
the lane for a lay-in to cut it to
16-11 and Craig Scott hit a short
jumper to make it 20-13.
Matheny hit a running jumper
and McCabe two free throws to
make it 24-27. After a Warrior
free throw, McCabe drove in for
a short
shot, then hit two free
throws to cut the lead to 26-21,
but the Warriprs closed put the

Blake Knowles hit a
rebound basket but the Warriors
held a 36-23 lead before Brian
Rust and McCabe hit back-to-
back three-pointers and McCabe
sank a pair of free-throws to
narrow the gap to 36-31. After a
Warrior basket Matheny hit a
three-pointer to get the Mustangs
to within 38-34. Rust scored to
cut the lead to 40-36 but
Oakridge scored and hit a free
throw to end the third quarter
with a 43-36 lead
Knowles opened the
fourth with a tip-in and McCabe
hit two free throws to get the
Mustangs to within 43-40 but the
Warriors went on an 11-1 run,
including 7-9 free throws, to take
a 54-41 lead.
McCabe hit
another three-pointer and Scott
made one of two from the line to
get within nine, but a Warrior
free throw made it a 10-point
game.
McCabe scored on a
dnve and lay-in and Scot hit two
free throws with :52.6 left to
make it 55-29. Ryan Maneson
scored on a rebound basket with
:38 left to make it 56-51 but the
Warriors made 3-6 free throws
down the stretch to hang on for
the win.
McCabe
led
the
Mustangs with 21 points,
including 11 of 12 from the line,
and six rebounds. Matheny and
Papineau each had seven points
and Matteson had six rebounds
and three steals. Knowles had
four rebounds and one assist,
despite being plagued with foul
trouble all game. Clint Bellamy
had a strong game off the bench

for litter patrol
Know a young person looking
for an outdoors summer job? The
Oregon
Department
of
Transportation may have a place
for them.
Each year ODOT hires 300-350
youth statewide to clean up state
highway nghts-of-way as part of
the Youth Litter Patrol program.
Crews primarily pick up litter.
However, duties may also
include graffiti removal and
general landscape maintenance.
A typical crew includes a crew
leader and at least two crew
members.
Youth Litter Patrol workers are
paid on an hourly basis starting
at $6.77 for crew members and
$7.32 for crew leaders.
Crew leaders must be at least
18 years old with a valid driver's
license and good driving record.
Crew members must be 16 to 20
years old.
To apply for the Youth Litter
Patrol, register with the local
Employment Department office
between March 13 and July 16,
2000 .
Interviews for selected
applicants for the summer
session will begin during the
month of May. Depending on the
area, patrols may work up to 12
weeks this summer. The list also
may be used to hire for year-
round, Christmas and spring
break crews.
The Youth Litter Patrol
program is funded through the
sale of custom license plates
available through Driver and
Motor Vehicles Services.
