Mustang girls' basketball team takes second place in district tournament.
By Rick Paullus
Nearly perfect play by Shelley
Rietmann led the Heppner Mus
tang girls to two wins at the Dis
trict 7-2A Tournam ent in
Pendleton on Feb. 25-26 to qualify
for the State 2A Tournament as
the second place team from the
Columbia Basin Conference.
Rietmann was a perfect 10 for
10 from the field and made 7-7
free throws for 27 points as the
Mustangs beat Weston-McEwen,
61-54, on Friday night. On Satur
day night, Rietmann made all six
of her field goal attempts and fin
ished with 16 points as the Mus
tangs rallied in the fourth quarter
to beat the Pilot Rock Rockets,
47-46.
The Mustangs improved to 18-
9 on the year and qualified for the
state tournament for the second
straight year, where they were to
play Santiam on Tuesday night.
Rietmann scored on a lay-m on
a nice pass from Casey Ingraham
to start the game against the
TigerScots. Weston-McEwen
came back to take a 6-2 lead be
fore Amy Papineau hit Trisha
Adams for a lay-in. Papineau
scored to make it 9-6 but the
TigerScots took a 13-6 lead after
one as the Mustangs had 15 turn
overs.
The TigerScots held a 17-6 lead
before Rietmann took over hitting
a rebound basket, a lay-in on a
nice pass from Lacey Matteson
and a free throw as she was
fouled. Rietmann hit two free
throw s, M atteson one and
Rietmann two more to get within
18-16. Ashley Ropp hit Rietmann
for a lay-m and Manssa McCabe
hit a short jumper to get within 21 -
20. Rietmann then hit a rebound
basket to give the Mustangs a 22-
21 lead at halftime.
Ropp hit a three-pointer and
Rietmann scored on a rebound
basket to make it 27-21, then Ropp
hit another three-pointer and
Ingraham a short jumper to stretch
the lead to 32-24.
The TigerScots wouldn’t quit
though, and came back to within
32-31 before McCabe hit a three-
pointer and Adams a lay-in to
make it 37-31. A three-point play
by Rietmann after a nice pass
from Ingraham gave the Mustangs
a 40-37 lead after three. Another
three-point play by Rietmann af
ter getting a pass from San Juanita
Elguezabal to open the fourth
boosted the lead to six. Rietmann
got another nice pass from
Elguezabal for a lay-in and
Ingraham hit a runmngjumper to
make it 47-42, but the TigerScots
came back to tie.
Ingraham hit back-to-back
jumpers and Rietmann scored on
a rebound to make it 53-49, but a
three-pointer by the TigerScots
made it a one point game.
Ingraham came back with a
jumper and two free throws to
boost the lead back to five.
Papineau hit two more free throws
with :55 left to make it 59-52. The
TigerScots got to within 59-54 and
had the ball, but Papineau came
up with a steal with : 15 left and
then hit a free throw to seal the
win. Ropp hit a free throw with
:03 left for the final margin.
Rietmann had 11 rebounds, six
offensive, to go with her 27 points
and two steals. Ingraham scored
12 points, all in the second half,
five rebounds and five assists.
Ropp had seven points, five re
bounds and two steals. Papineau
had eight rebounds, three steals
and two assists. McCabe had six
rebounds.
Papineau hit a free throw and
Ingraham a running jumper to get
the Mustangs started against the
Pilot Rock Rockets. Ropp hit a
three-pointer to make it 6-3.
Rietmann hit a lay-in on a nice
pass from Ingraham, Matteson hit
two o f four free throws and
Papineau hit Rietmann for a lay-
in to make it 12-5. A three-pointer
by the Rockets’ Amanda Doherty
at the buzzer made it 12-8 in fa
vor of the Mustangs after one.
The Rockets went on an 8-0
run to start the second quarter
before Rietmann scored on a re
bound basket to make it 16-14.
The Rockets took a 22-14 lead
before Ingraham scored on a re
bound basket and led 24-16 when
Brett Barber scored on a lay-in
on a nice pass from Ingraham.
The Rockets scored at the end of
the second to take a 26-18 lead at
halftime.
The Rockets pushed the lead
to 10 before M atteson hit a
jumper, but the Rockets came
back and took a 31-20 lead.
Matteson then hit a lay-in on a nice
pass from Barber and Rietmann
scored on a put back to cut the
lead to 31 -24. The Rockets led by
as much as 12 and settled for a
40-29 lead at the end of three. It
looked like the Rockets were go
ing to beat the Mustangs for the
second time in five days.
But the Mustangs would have
none of it as they came out with a
vengeance. Ingraham and
Elguezabal each hit free throws,
Ingraham had a lay-in, Rietmann
hit a free throw, then a rebound
basket, and all of a sudden it was
40-36. The Rockets came back
to take a 44-36 lead with 3:00 left.
Papineau and Rietmann each hit
short jumpers and Ingraham hit a
free throw to make it 44-41 with
2:15 left. Ingraham hit a short
jumper to make it 44-43 with 1:14
left. After the Rockets missed a
free throw, Ingraham sent the
Heppner crowd into a frenzy by
hitting a baseline jumper with 50
left, finally giving the Mustangs a
45-44 lead.
Ingraham was fouled after
grabbing a rebound on a missed
free throw with :21.8 left and hit
one of two free throws to make it
46-44. After a Rocket turnover,
Matteson was fouled with : 1Q left
and made one of two free throws
to make it 47-44. The Rockets
scored with :4.5 left and the Mus
tangs ran out the clock to get the
win.
Rietmann had nine rebounds,
four offensive, to got with her 16
points to again lead the Mustangs.
Ingraham ended up with 15 points,
nine in the fourth, eight rebounds
and three assists. Matteson had
seven points and four rebounds.
Papineau pulled down six re
bounds.
After the tournament, Casey
Ingraham was named to the CBC
first team, while Ashley Ropp,
Amy Papineau and Shelley
Rietmann were each named to the
honorable mention.
