Heppner High School Mustang boys' team earns second place in the district championships.

The Heppner Mustang
boys earned a trip to the State 2A
Tournament with a hard-fought
48-45 win over the Pilot Rock
Rockets at the District 7-2A
Tournament. The Mustangs beat
Weston-McEwen, 50-32, on
Friday, Feb. 25, to advance to the
championship game.
The Mustangs, now 16-
10 overall, were to play Oakndge
on Tuesday morning at the state
tournament held in Pendleton
from Feb. 29 to March 4.
Blake Knowles got the
Mustangs off to a good start
against the Tigerscots by hitting
a three-pointer. Craig Scott hit
Joe Papineau on a nice pass for a
lay-m, Knowles got a steal and a
lay-m and Ryan Matteson scored
on a lay-in to make it 9-0 before
the Tigerscots knew what hit
them. Scott hit a long jumper
and Papineau scored on a
rebound basket to make it 13-6,
but a three-pointer by the
Tigerscots narrowed the lead to
13-9 after one.
Stefan Matheny hit a
runaipg jumper and an acrobatic
lay-in and Michael McCabe
made a lay-m off a nice pass
from Matteson to make it 19-9
early in the second quarter.
McCabe hit a running jumper to
make it 21-11 but the Tigerscots
came back with a bucket to make
it 21 -13. Knowles hit a rebound
basket, Matteson hit a long
jumper and Matheny scored on a
nice pass from Scott to give the
Mustangs a 27-13 lead at
halftime.
Matheny scored on a
driving lay-in but the Tigerscots
got to within 29-17 before
Knowles hit a jumper, McCabe
scored on a lay-in and Matheny
drove in for another lay-in to
make it 35-17.
Papineau hit a short
jumper to open the fourth quarter
to make it 37-21 and Chip Piper
hit a long jumper from the top of
the key to make it 39-24. The
Tigerscots got to within 40-30
but Papineau scored on a
rebound basket and Matteson hit
Knowles on a nice pass for a lay-
in to make it 44-30 and put the
game away. Matteson scored,
McCabe hit two free throws and
Brian Rust scored to close out the
scoring.
Knowles
led
the
Mustangs with 11 points, 16
rebounds, six offensive, and three
steals. Matheny hit 5-7 shots to
finish with 10 points, three
rebounds and two assists.
McCabe had nine points, 10
rebounds, four steals and two
assists and Papineau hit 4-5 for
eight points. Matteson finished
with six points and two assists
and Scott had three steals.
Pilot Rock jumped all
over the Mustangs, taking a 12-2
lead before Knowles hit a jumper
and Matheny hit two free throws
to end the first quarter with the
Rockets leading, 14-6.
Scott converted a three-
point play and Matteson hit a
long three-pointer to get the
Mustangs to within 17-12.
McCabe made a free throw and
Knowles made a three-pointer to
get within 19-16, then Knowles
got a tip-in to make it 20-18.
Matteson scored on a rebound
basket to close out the first half
with the Mustangs trailing, 22-
20 .
Matteson then took the ball down
court on the in-bounds play and
made a long pass to McCabe for
a lay-in at the buzzer and the
final margin of victory.
Knowles hit 5-8 shots for
11 points and grabbed five
rebounds. Matteson hit 3-5 from
three-point range for 11 points
and also had three steals.
Matheny had nine points, five
steals and three assists and
McCabe had eight points, seven
rebounds, two assists and two
steals. Papineau grabbed four
rebounds and Scott dished off
four assists.
At the conclusion of the
tournament, Ryan Matteson was
named to the Columbia Basin
conference first team and Blake
Knowles and Michael McCabe
received honorable mention.

Morrow County Gun Club.

Day had a good day at the 16-
yard line with a 24 of 25 for first
place, followed by Harvey
Childers and Mick Sharp with 23
each and Bob Krein and Jeff
Cutsforth each with 22.
At the 20-yard handicap line,
Day, Bill Greenup and Childers
had a three-way tie for first with
22, Cutsforth and Mick Sharp
had 21 each and the Schlichting
brothers, Mark and Bill, tied for
third with 20.
The ladies' shoot at the

Club

The Incredible Edible 4-H Club
met Feb. 11 at the lone Fire Hall.
Members brought fabric and
other sewing items to send to a
woman who makes clothing for
underprivileged girls in the
United States.
They also made cookies for a
meeting that was held in lone as
a community service project.
Members

international dish and shared
some history about their dish and
the country it came from.
Members attending included

Krystal Temple, Amy Jepsen,
Heather Rill, Jeff Hunt and Kayla
LaRue and leaders Shelby and

A two-month investigation by
the BENT Team resulted in the
execution of a search warrant and
the arrest of Satumino Flores, 33,
of 202 SE 4th Street in Irrigon.
The BENT team and deputies
from the Morrow County
Sheriffs office arrested Flores in
a vehicle near his residence. A
search warrant was then served
on Flores's residence where small
amounts of methamphetamine
and marijuana were seized.
Flores has been lodgecflat the
Umatilla County Jail and is
facing charges of possession of a
controlled substance, frequenting
a place where controlled
substances
are used and
endangering the welfare of a
minor. Bail for the three charges
is $37,000.
