Casey Ingraham scored 18
points and grabbed 11 rebounds
to lead the Heppner Mustang girls
to a 47-46 win over the Weston-
McFwen TigerScots on Friday,
Feb. 11, in Athena. The win im­
proves the Mustangs’ record to
7-3 in the CBC and 14-8 overall.
The TigerScots took an early
4-0 lead, but an Ingraham basket,
a San Juanita Elguezabal free
throw and a rebound basket by
Ingraham put the M ustangs
ahead, 5-4. The TigerScots came
back with four more but Marissa
McCabe scored to close the first
quarter with W eston-M cFwen
holding an 8-7 lead.
The TlgerScots increased their
lead to 13-8 b efore S h elley
Rietmann scored to cut it to 13-
10. It was 15-10 when Ashley
Ropp hit a free throw and
Ingraham had a steal and lay-in
to cut it to 15-13. A rebound bas­
ket by Trisha Adams made it 19-
15, but the TigerScots took a 21 -
16 lead at halftime.
Elguezabal had back-to-back
steals and lay-ins to cut the lead
to 21-20. The TigerScots came
back with a basket but Ingraham
hit a jumper and Ropp hit a three-
pointer to give the Mustangs a 25-
23 lead midway through the third.

pass from Ingraham, Lacey
Matteson got a steal and a lay-in.
and Ingraham hit a jumper to give
the Mustangs a 32-25 lead. The
TigerScots scored the final four
points o f the quarter and the first
basket o f the fourth to cut the lead
to 32-31.
Elguezabal scored on a short
jumper and Ingraham scored on a
rebound basket to up the lead to
36-31. but the TigerScots came
right back to cut the lead to 36-
35. Ingraham answered with a
jumper, Adams made a free throw
and Elguezabal made a lay-in on

Rietmann scored on a nice pass
from Matteson to make it 45-39
and Ingraham nit two free throws
to make it 47-41 The FigerSeots
narrowed the gap to 47-45 and had
a chance to tie with :04 left but
just made one o f two free throw s
as the Mustangs held on for the
win.
Ingraham had four assists and
two steals to go w ith her 18 points
and 11 rebounds. Elguezabal fin­
ished with 10 points and t w o steals.
Rietmann had five points and eight
rebounds. Adams had nine re-

The Heppner Mustang-,
JV boys dug themselves into a
hole against the Culver Bulldogs
and couldn't quite dig their way
out, falling 55-50 on Saturday,
Feb. 12, in Heppner On Friday
the Mustangs lost to the Weston-
McEwen Tigerscots. 55-37. in
Athena.
The Mustangs were
down 14-4 after one against the
Bulldogs and got two three-
pointers from Brian Rust in the
second but still trailed 2 7 -15 at
halftime. Brad Adams scored
eight points in the third to have
the Mustangs pull within 39-30
going into the fourth. A rebound
basket by Sam VanLiew with
3:30 left cut the lead to 45-43
with 1:20 left but the Mustangs
couldn't get any closer.
The Bulldogs made 28 o f
38 tree throws for the game,
compared to 12-21 for the
Mustangs.
Rust hit five three-
pointers and finished with 16
points and Adams scored 12
points before fouling out early in
the fourth. VanLiew finished
with seven points and Paullus.

Mustangs led 9-8 after one as

but the Tigerscots outscored
Heppner 20-3 in the second to
take a 28-12 lead at halftime
Chip Piper scored seven points in
the fourth but the Mustangs were
in too big o f a hole to climb out
of.
Piper led the Mustangs
with 10 points and Rust had nine.
Drake hit two three-pointers lor

The lone junior varsity men
played two quarters against the
Falcons on the Cardinals’ home
court on February 11, defeating
the Fossil team, 36-26
Dylan Pettyjohn and Zac Fabian
led the Cardinal men with l()
points each Pettyjohn had 10
rebounds, handed off three
assists, robbed three steals and
blocked one Falcon shot. Fabian
robbed two balls from the
Falcons.
Adam
McCabe
contributed seven points, brought
down seven rebounds, dished out
three assists and had two steals.
The Cardinals came out strong
in the first quarter, scoring 19
points and holding the Falcons to

Ryan Matteson hit five o f eight
three-pointers and fmiihed with
21 points to lead the hot-shooting
Heppner Mustangs to a 70-57
win over the Weston-McEwen
Tigerscots Friday, Feb. 11, in
Athena.
The win was the second o f the
year over the Tigerscots and
improved the Mustangs' CBC
record to 6-4 and their overall
record to 13-9.
Matteson hit a three-
pointer to get the Mustangs going
to start the game and Blake
Knowles scored to make it 6-5
but the Tigerscots came back to
take an 11-7 lead. Matteson hit
another three, scored on a nice
pass from Knowles and Know les
hit a lay-in to give the Mustangs
a 14-11 lead. The Tigerscots
came back to take a 16-14 lead
but
Matteson
and
Stefan
Matheny hit back-to-back three-
pointers and Matheny hit a
rebound basket at the buzzer to
give the Mustangs a 22-16 lead.
Michael McCabe scored
two straight baskets and Craig
Scott scored on a nice pass from
Matheny to increase the lead to
28-21. The Tigerscots got within
28-26 but Joe Papineau scored
on a baseline lay-in, hit a jumper.
Matteson scored, then hit a three-
pointer to close out the first half
with the Mustangs ahead 37-27.
The third quarter began
with Matheny hitting a long
jumper and making a nice pass to
McCabe for a lay-n to make it
41-27. Clint Bellamy made a
nice pass to Know les for a lay-in
and Matteson hit another three-
pointer to make it 48-33.
Knowles scored on back-
to-back rebound baskets then
dished o ff to Matheny for a lay -
in to give the Mustangs a 54-35
lead. The Tigerscots cut it to 54-
41. but Papineau hit a short
jumper and McCabe a freethrow
to make it 57-41 after three

McCabe hit a rebound basket to
make it 61-47 and Papineau
completed a three-point play on a
rebound basket and foul and

The Heppner Mustang
"C" Team boys improved to 7-8
on the year by beating Weston-
McEwen. 57-41. on Tuesday.
Feb. 8. and Mac-11 1 . 40-34. on
Thursday, l eb. 10. Both games
were in Heppner.
The Mustangs trailed the
Tigerscots 7-6 after one but
rallied in the second, getting six
points from Kelly Paullus to take
an 18-14 lead at halftime.
Paullus scored seven in the third
as the Mustangs took a 37-24
lead going into the fourth
quarter.
Donald Adams scored 10
and Josh Winters, five, as the
Mustangs
outscored
the
Tigerscots, 20-17, and got the
win to avenge an earlier defeat at
Weston-McEwen. The Mustangs
hit 8-13 free throws in the fourth.
Paullus finished with 17
points, including a three-pointer,
and Adams had 15 points. Doug
Orwick had a good game, scoring
10 points, and Winters finished
with seven.
Orwick scored six points
in the first quarter against the
Pioneers as the Mustangs took a
12-4 lead after one.

scored six in the second as
Heppner led 22-14 at halftime
The Pioneers narrowed
the gap to 28-25 going into the
fourth and took a 32-30 lead
midway through the period. A
lay-in by Paullus tied the score
and a lay-in by Orwick put the
M. stangs ahead for good as they
were able to hang on for the win.
Paullus led the Mustangs with
16 points and Donald Adams and
Orwick each had eight points.
