Heppner police to crack
down on seat belt law
The Heppner Police Department
will join other cities and counties
throughout Oregon. Washington
and British Columbia in the
Thfue Flags Campaign.
The campaign seeks to reduce
the number of deaths and injuries
which occur as a result of motor
vehicle crashes by increasing
public awareness o f laws
regarding safety belt use and
other traffic issues including
DUII and speed.
There will be three blitzes
during the year 2000. The first
one is scheduled for Feb. 11-Feb.
20. Heppner Police Dept, will be
participating
with
officers
working overtime. The funds will
be provided by ODOT.
Heppner Police started
participating in the blitzes in
February 1999. When the blitz
first started, the surveys showed
only 52 percent of drivers and
passengers were buckled up.
After the campaign finished in
September 1999, 91 percent were
buckled up. This is a 39 percent
increase in the use of the safety
belt. This year, with drivers' and
passengers' cooperation, Heppner
Police would like to see 100
percent buckled up. "Remember,
the life you save may be your
own.”
