Mustang girls beat Stanfied Tigers
Mustang boys fall to Tigers in OT, 63-62

The Heppner Mustang boys’
varsity lost a war of attrition to
the visiting Stanfield Tigers, 63-62,
in overtime on Friday, Jan 21.
The loss dropped the Mustangs’
CBC record to 2-3 and their over­
all record to 9-8 overall.
The M ustangs lost Joe
Papineau early in the third quar­
ter after he sprained his ankle, and
lost B lake K now les, Ryan
Matteson and Clint Bellamy to
fouls, but still battled the Tigers to
the end. The game was tied at 60-
60 in overtime when the Tigers’
Kain Alarcon hit a three-pointer
with 18 seconds left Michael
McCabe scored with four seconds
left but the Tigers held onto the
ball out o f bounds as the buzzer
went off.
The Tigers took a 12-7 lead
after one quarter, but Papineau
scored on a three point play, hit a
lay-in on a nice pass from
Knowles and hit a short jumper.
McCabe then scored on a rebound
basket to give the Mustangs a 16-
14 lead. A th re e -p o in te r by
McCabe gave the Mustangs a 19-
18 lead but the Tlgers came back
to lead 27-23 before a basket by
Knowles closed out the first half
with the Tigers ahead. 27-25.
Knowles started out the third
quarter with a basket to tie the
score at 27-27 and McCabe and
Bellamy scored to make it 31 -29.
Knowles scored on a rebound
basket to give the Mustangs a 33-
31 lead but the Tigers came back
to take a 37-36 lead after three.
Bellamy scored six points and
McCabe hit two free throws as
the Mustangs took a 44-41 lead.
Matteson hit a free throw and a
lay-in on a nice pass from Craig
Scott to increase the lead to 4 7 -
43. The Tigers came back to tie
the game but Matteson scored on
a rebound basket and McCabe hit
a lay-in on a nice pass from Stefan
Matheny to make it 51 -47.
Scott hit a lay-in to make it 54-
51 but the Tigers came back to
take a 56-54 lead. McCabe hit two
free throws to tie it at 56-56 with

and the Mustangs controlled the
rebound and called timeout at set
up a last shot. Matteson took the
ball down the baseline and made
a short jump shot with two sec­
onds left but was called for an
offensive foul, his fifth, taking
away the basket.
Matheny hit two free throws
to open the overtime period but
the Tigers came back to take a
59-58 lead. McCabe hit two free
throws to give the Mustangs a 60-
59 lead but the Tigers came back
to tie the game with two minutes
left, then won the game with
Alarcon's basket.
McCabe led the Mustangs with
22 points, including 9-10 from the
free throw line, pulled down nine
rebounds and had four steals.
JV boys hold on to beat Tigers

The Heppner Mustang JV boys
took a 16-10 lead after one and
held on to beat the visiting
Stanfield Tigers, 43-40. on Friday,
Jan. 21.
The Mustangs led 33-29 going
into the fourth, but the Tigers came
back to tie it at 37-37 late in the
quarter. Brian Rust hit back-to-
back runmngjumpers from inside
the key, the last with 1:15 left, to
give the Mustangs a 41-37 lead.
The Tigers got to within 41-40.
but Kevin Drake made two tree
throws with three seconds left to
clinch the game for the Mustangs.
The win improved the Mus­
tangs’ record to 7-6 on the year.
Brad Adams hit three three-
pointers and finished with 11 points
to lead the Mustangs. Rust fin­
ished with 10 points and Justin
Wood played a strong game off
the bench and finished with nine
points.

Band plans
pop can drive
The Heppner High School
Band has planned a pop can drive
for the weekend after the Super
Bowl.
Band members ask that people
save their cans for pickup next
Friday or Saturday, February 4-5.
The band is raising money to
help pay for transportation and
lodging costs for a trip to Coeur
d' Alene. At Coeur d' Alene, the
band plans a performance at the
Silverwood theme park to offset
costs to attend the park. They
also plan to check out band
programs at area colleges.

grabbed five rebounds. Knowles
had eight points and three assists.
Papineau had eight points in lim­
ited playing time. Matteson had
seven points and nine rebounds.
Scott had five assists and three
steals.
The M ustangs have home
games this weekend against Pilot
Rock on Friday and Wahtonka on
Saturday.

Gun Club news

The freezing rain and snow
couldn’t keep the shooters away
from the Morrow County Gun
Club’s first weekend o f league
shooting on Sunday, Jan. 23. The
fire and warm food kept every­
body thawed out between shoots
and made for a fun afternoon.
The leaders at the 16 yard line
were C urt Day and H arvey
Childers, and then a three-way tie
betw een M ick Sharp, M ark
Schlichting and Rob Ashbeck.
Ashbeck also lead the way at the
handicap line, followed by Curt
Day and Roger Mortimore.
The club will shoot at 9 a m.
next Sunday due to the Super
Bowl and will change to Saturdays
throughout February for Colt bas­
ketball.
The Heppner Mustang girls’
varsity used a good second half
to beat the visiting Stanfield Ti­
gers, 50-39, on Friday, Jan. 21.
The win improved the Mustangs’
record to 3-2 in the CBC and 10-
7 overall.
Ashley Ropp hit two three-
pointers as the Mustangs blew out
to a 15-5 lead after the first quar­
ter. But the Tigers came back to
trail just 21 -19 at halftime.
Shelley Rietmann had eight
points and Casey Ingraham hit for
six as the Mustangs took a 35-28
lead at the end of the third quar­
ter.
Ropp made a free throw and
another three-pointer to start the
fourth to increase the lead to 11.
San Juanita Elguezabal hit a free
throw and Lacey Matteson had a
steal and lay-in to increase the
lead to 42-30.
The Mustangs made 6-8 free
throws to hold off the Tigers the
rest of the way.
Rietmann finished with 14
points, eight rebounds and four
steals to lead the Mustangs. Ropp
ended up with 13 points and had
two assists. M atteson had 10
points. Ingraham had eight points
and three steals. Amy Papineau
pulled down 10 rebounds.
The M ustangs have hom e
games with league-leading Pilot
Rock on Friday, Jan. 28 and
Wahtonka on Saturday, Jan. 29.

team girls got off to a slow start,
falling behind 19-2 after the first
quarter and couldn’t overcome it,
falling at Pilot Rock, 42-26, on
Tuesday, Jan. 18.
The Mustangs outscored the
Rockets 24-23 the rest o f the
game but could get no closer than
10 points.
Sarah Eckman had four points
in the third and finished with a
team-high eight for the game.
Jesse Kempas had five in the
fourth and seven for the game.
Kelsey Greenup ended up with six
points and grabbed several re­
bounds.

The Heppner M ustang “C ”
team boys traveled to Pilot Rock
on Tuesday. Jan. 18 and suffered
a 67-56 loss in a roughly played
game.
Conor Kilkenny scored four
points in the first quarter as the
Rockets took a 11-10 lead after
one. Kelly Paullus scored 14 points
in the second quarter, but the
Mustangs still trailed 32-28 at half­
time.
The Rockets broke the game
open in the third, outscoring the
Mustangs 22-11 to take a 54-39
lead.

the fourth, getting seven points

Mustang JV girls use big
second half to down Tigers

The Heppner Mustang JV girls
outscored the visiting Stanfield
Tigers, 32-10, in the second half
to win going away, 52-28, on Fri­
day, Jan. 21.
The Mustangs jumped out to a
quick 15-6 lead after one, but the
Tigers came back to trail just 20-
16 at halftime
The game was tied at 24-24
early in the third before the Mus­
tangs’ defense took over, shutting
the Tigers down.
Brett Barber led the way with
eight steals and four assists to go
along with 14 points. Jodie Carlson
also had 14 points on 7-10 shoot­
ing and five rebounds. Meghan
Bailey hit a three-pointer and fin­
ished with 12 points and led the
Mustangs with six rebounds. Sa­
rah Eckman had five steals and
Marcy Miller had six points.
The win improved the Mus­
tangs’ record to 9-3 on the year.

Ione 'C team loses to Condon
The lone "C" team men
traveled to Condon on Saturday,
January 25, losing to the Condon
team 45-19.
Richard Campbell led the team
with eight points and seized two
steals. Andrew Rietmann led on
the
boards,
capturing
12
rebounds.
Coach Jim Swanson praised the
efforts of the lone squad. "They
played great the last three
quarters. It was a good team
effort; we fell way behind in the
first quarter and just couldn't
make up the difference,"
Swanson said.
JV girls defeat Cascade Locks
The lone JV ladies defeated
Cascade Locks. 49-19, on Friday,
January 21.
The Pirates remained scoreless
the first quarter with the lone
Lady junior varsity scoring 12
points.
Cascade Locks scored four
points in the second quarter for a
half time score of 20-4.
Cyndi Heagy scored 12 points
for the Lady Cardinals with the
aide of Jennifer Thompson with

eight points and Tracy Griffith
with six points. McElligott also
captured six steals.
Jeanette Brantley and Tracy
Griffith displayed great defense
with two blocked shots each.
Heagy also led the boards
with nine rebounds and was

with eight rebounds. Salli
McElligott, a vital team player,
led the team in assists.
