Padbergs to celebrate 50th anniversary
Jeanette and Archie Padberg
will celebrate
their 50th
anniversary at an open house on
Saturday, February 5, from 2-5
p.m. at the All Saints Episcopal
Church Parish Hall in Heppner.
Jeanette Settles and Archie
Padberg were married February
4, 1950, and settled into married
life in Heppner.
That fall they moved to
Monmouth
where
Archie
completed courses for a teaching
degree at Western Oregon State
University.
Upon graduation he accepted a
teaching position at Milwaukie
Junior High for five years and
then spent another 12 years
teaching ■ in Portland Public
Schools until 1969.
In 1962, the couple and their
three children purchased a filbert
orchard and began "nut farming".
That was the beginning of
several shared business ventures.
Over the next 25 years, they
owned and operated a donut
shop,
a
wholesale
food
distributorship, a True Value
Hardware store and real estate
sales and development.
They constructed and operated
a professional
and retail
shopping center and subdivision
until 1993.
Their last and present venture is
the purchase of a manufactured
home park.
In between these businesses,
their three children married and
presented them with seven
grandsons
and
one
granddaughter,
one
granddaughter-in-law and one
great grandson.
The Padbergs enjoy traveling
and have traveled throughout the
United States, Canada, Alaska,
and have taken trips to Mexico,
Germany, England, Scotland and
Wales, a cruise from Montreal to
Miami in 1998 and most recently
a cruise through the Panama
Canal.
In 1996 they came home to
Heppner to retire and enjoy the
people and community.
The Heppner seventh grade
girls improved their record to 3-0
with their win over the Athena-
Weston Panthers on Saturday,
Jan.22. Their other two wins
came against Stanfield on Jan. 15
and Jan 21 at Umatilla
At Weston, the girls came out
with a 6-2 lead at the end of the
first quarter and never looked
back. The final score was 23-19
behind Shanna Rietmann's 12
points. Jessica Wainwnght and
Madison Bailey each had four
points.
The eighth grade girls picked up
their first win of the season with
a 25-15 win over the Panthers of
Athena-Weston.
The
win
improves their record to 1-2 with
losses to Stanfield, 14-18 in
overtime, and Umatilla, 21-30.
Saturday against Athena-
Weston, the Ponies held on to a
14-3 half-time lead to get their
first victory. Stephanie Hanson
scored 10 points to lead the
Ponies. Tiffany Piper also scored
six points in the game.

Ernie McCabe of Heppner caught this 36 lb Chinook Salmon (left) last
year. However, a good friend of Ernie's brought in another picture this
week documenting Ernie's earlier fishing skills Not quite 36 lbs, this
"monster" (right) was taken on skip day back in 1943. Just goes to
show how a few years experience can improve your fishing skills, he
remarked.
