Mustang girls run away from TigerScots
Layin with two seconds left gives
Mustangs one-point win over TigerScots

The Heppner Mustang girls’
varsity improved to 2-1 in the CBC
and 9-6 overall by running away
from the visiting Weston-McEwen
TigerScots, 67-43, on Friday, Jan.
14.
The Mustangs led 17-15 after
one and got six points from Casey
Ingraham in the second quarter to
take a 26-19 lead at halftime.
Ashley Ropp hit a three-pointer
as the Mustangs took a 43-31 lead
after three and Heppner scored
24 points in the fourth, getting two
th ree-p o in ters from M arissa
McCabe and eight points from
Shelley Rietmann to pull away for
the win.
Ingraham finished w ith 18
points, nine rebounds and two
steals. Rietmann ended up with 17
points. McCabe had three three-
pointers and scored 10 points.
Ropp had two three-pointers and
eight points plus three assists.

meeting set in
Heppner
Morrow County Judge Terry
Tallman invites the public to a
telecommunications
planning
group meeting Friday, January
21, at noon in the Conference
Center of the Bank of Eastern
Oregon. The goal of the meeting
is

improve
telecommunications services for
Morrow County businesses and
agencies.
Updates on the Senate Bill 622
community survey will also be

HHS JV girls win two easily

The Heppner Mustang JV girls
routed the v isitin g W eston-
McEwen TigerScots, 60-29. on
Friday, Jan. 14, then traveled to
Sherman County on Saturday,
Jan. 15, and used a big second half
to beat the Huskies, 47-25.
The Mustangs got seven points
from Meghan Bailey and took a
14-2 lead after one against the
TigerScots and seven points from
Jenm Patton in the second quar­
ter to take a 29-12 halftime lead.
Heppner dominated the third
quarter, 16-5, to take a 45-17 lead
and coast in for the win.
Bailey finished with 15 points
to lead the M ustangs. Sarah
Eckman had 12 points, seven re­
bounds and five steals. Patton fin­
ished with nine points, six rebounds
and four steals. Brett Barber had
nine points, five steals and two
assists. Jodie Carlson had eight
points and seven rebounds.
At Sherman County, the Mus­
tangs held a 20-15 lead at half­
time but got three three-pointers
from Barber to take a 34-21 lead
after three, then continued the
onslaught in the fourth to win go­
ing away.
Barber hit 7-11 shots and fin­
ished with 21 points and four
steals. Bailey had eight points and
four rebounds. Eckman had six
points and four rebounds. Jesse
Gutierrez had five points and three
steals. Kelsey Greenup pulled
down six rebounds and Patton had
five rebounds.
The Mustangs improved to 8-3
on the year with a home game
against Stanfield on Friday, Jan.
21 next on the schedule.

left to give the Heppner Mustangs
boys’ varsity a 7 1 -70 w in over the
visiting Weston-McEwen Tiger­
Scots, on Friday, Jan. 14. The win
improved the M ustangs’ CBC
record to 2-l and their overall
record to 9-6.
The Mustangs trailed 15-12
after one but got seven points from
McCabe and six points from Ryan
Matteson to get within one at half­
time at 32-31.
McCabe scored seven more
and Joe Papineau scored six as
the Mustangs took a 53-50 lead
going into the fourth.
The M ustangs hit 8-9 free
throws in the fourth as they fell
behind, then rallied for the win.
The M ustangs hit 12-15 free
throw s for the gam e, led by
Papineau making 6-6.
McCabe finished with a game-
high 22 points and Papineau ended
up with 16 points and five re­
bounds. Matteson had 12 points
and seven rebounds. B lake

weekend, losing to the visiting

County, Saturday, Jan. 15.
The M ustangs tra ile d the
TigerScots 27-24 at halftime but
were outscored 16-11 in the third
and couldn’t make up the differ­
ence in the fourth.
David Piper hit four three-
pointers and finished with a game-
high 16 points for the Mustangs.
Kevin Drake and Brad Adams
each scored 10 points and Justin
Wood finished with seven.
At Sherman County, the Mus­
tangs trailed 16-13, at halftime.
They got nine points from Piper
in the third to get within two going
into the fourth but couldn’t get the
lead as the Huskies made 7-10
free throws for the win.
Piper scored 15 points to lead
the Mustangs and Brian Rust fin­
ished with 12.
The M ustangs’ record now
stands at 6-6 on the year. They
play a hom e gam e against
Stanfield this Friday, Jan. 21.

The Heppner M ustang “C ”
team girls fell just short at Mac-
Hi in Milton-Freewater on Thurs­
day, Jan. 13, as a shot by Paula
Spicerkuhn went in after the
buzzer had sounded. Marcy Miller
hit a free throw with three sec­
onds left to get the M ustangs
within one at 29-28. Cindy Gall
stole the inbounds pass and threw
up a shot which Spicerkuhn re­
bounded and put back just late.
The final score was 29-28.
Miller led the Mustangs with
eight points while Kelsey Greenup
and Jesse Kempas each scored
seven points.
On Monday, Jan. 10, the girls
traveled to Pendleton and lost 41 -
13 as they suffered from a cold

Mustangs lose to Huskies

The Heppner Mustang boys’
v arsity lost to the Sherm an
County Huskies at Moro, 77-51,
on Saturday, Jan. 15. The Mus­
tangs’ CBC record dropped to 2-
2 and their overall record to 9-7.
The Mustangs fell behind 19-
11 after one and got six points
from Clint Bellamy in the second
to^stay, within 33-24 at halftime.
The Huskies came out hot in
the second half to win the game
going away.
Blake Knowles led the Mus­
tangs with 13 points and pulled
down four rebounds. Bellamy fin­
ished with nine points and five re­
bounds. Ryan Matteson had nine
points. M ichael M cCabe had
eight points and five rebounds.
Craig Scott had seven points and
three assists. Stefan Matheny had
three steals.
The Mustangs next face the
visiting Stanfield Tigers on Friday,
Jan. 21 and have a bye on Satur­
day.

Mustangs’ CBC record fell to 2-
2 and their overall record is now
9-7.
The Mustangs trailed 19-13
after one despite getting nine
points from Casey Ingraham, and
tra ile d 36-26 at halftim e as
Ingraham and Lacey Matteson
each hit three-pointers in the sec­
ond quarter.
Trisha Adam s scored four
points in the third, but the Huskies
stretched their lead to 50-34 after
three and coasted for the win.
Ingraham finished with 16
points and two assists. Adams
ended up with six points. Shelley
Rietmann had five points and five

HHS ’C’ team
beat Pioneers

The Heppner M ustang “C”
team boys traveled to Milton-
Freewater on Thursday, Jan. 13,
and beat the Mac-Hi Pioneers, 47-
34, to improve their record to 4-3
on the year.
Donald Adams scored four
points in the first quarter as the
Mustangs took a 7-4 lead and in­
creased the lead to 24-15 at half­
time.
Kelly Paullus scored 10 of his
game-high 21 points in the fourth
quarter as the Mustangs held on
to get the win.
Josh W inters and Adam
Bergstrom each scored six points
and Adams finished with five.
