Lady Cardinals defeat Mustangs in overtime
The lone Lady Cardinals
defeated the Heppner Fillies in
overtime on Tuesday, January 4,
54-50.
Nikki McElligott unleashed her
fury on the Fillies the first
quarter, scoring nine of her 28
total game points. lone ended the
first quarter ahead of the Fillies
by 10 points, 17-7.
Heppner came back with a
vengeance the second quarter,
scoring 13 points and permitting
the Lady Cardinals to score only
five points to end the half at lone
22, Heppner 20.
Heppner came out after the half
to score 14 points to lone's 13,
which closed the Cardinals' lead
to only one point at the end of the
third quarter.
lone scored 10 points in the
fourth quarter, but the Fillies had
scored 17 points and ended the
fourth quarter tied at 45.

scoring. Salli McElligott ended
the game with four points and
five rebounds. Olivia Thompson
scored four points and robbed
seven steals. Tracy Griffith and
Jennifer Thompson each brought
four points to the lone effort.

with six steals and Jeanette

were tough on the boards.

to give the Mustangs an early 6-2
lead. The Tigers came back to
take a 9-7 lead but a three-pointer
to end the quarter by Ashley Ropp
gave the lead back to the Mus
tangs.
Ropp hit another three-pointer
to give the Mustangs a 16-12 lead
and Lacey Matteson hit a three
to make it 19-14 midway through
the second quarter. Matteson hit
a rebound basket, Casey
Ingraham made a free throw and
Matteson completed a three-point
play to increase the lead to 25-16.
Amy Papineau scored to end the
first half with the Mustangs lead
ing 28-18.
Rietmann scored on a rebound
basket and Ingraham hit two free
throws to start the third quarter.
After Matteson hit a three-pointer
and another bucket, the Mustangs
held their biggest lead at 37-20.
The Tigers came back with four
straight points, but the Mustangs
responded with a three-pointer by
Marissa McCabe, and a free
Shelly Rietmann with two points,
for an ending score of 50.
Nikki McElligott led the
Cardinals with 28 points, 16
rebounds, five steals and five
assists. Camie Burright scored 23
points, had five steals and six
rebounds.

Ione JV boys win both weekend games
The lone JV boys teams had an
incredible weekend, winning
both of their games.
On Friday, January 7, lone
defeated Helix on the Grizzlies'
home turf. 70-61.
The Cardinal men had five team
members score in the double
digits. Adam Neiffer was the lead
point producer with 16 points.
Dylan Pettyjohn succeeded in
canning seven shots for a total of
14 points. Adam McCabe and
Zac Fabian contributed 11 points
each, with Dustin Haguewood
adding additional 10 points to
the score.
Neiffer had an outstanding
performance, shooting 70 percent
from the floor, grabbing five
rebounds and taking three steals
from the Grizzlies. McCabe shot
83 percent from the foul line,
brought down six rebounds and
grabbed two steals. Dylan
Pettyjohn must have frustrated
the Helix men when he robbed
10 steals from the Grizzlies,
brought down six rebounds and
blocked one shot.
Mustangs start out fast, beating Tigers 67-48 lone Varsity boys defeat

Mustangs in close one
basket to close out the half, giving
Ryan Matteson started out hit
ting his first eight shots, including
two three-pointers, as the Mus
tangs jumped out to a 16-2 lead
and never looked back, beating the
Stanfield Tigers, 67-48, on Satur
day, Jan. 8 in Stanfield. The win
evens their CBC record at 1 -1 and
their overall record improved to
8 - 6 .
Matteson began the game with
a three-pointer and Michael
McCabe hit a lay-m and a jumper
for a quick 7-0 lead. Matteson hit
back-to-back jumpers, McCabe
hit a three and Matteson scored
again and it was 16-2 before
Stanfield knew what hit them. The
Mustangs held an 18-10 lead af
ter one as the Tigers made a run
to get back in the game.
The teams traded baskets until
Matteson hit a three-pointer, Joe
Papineau scored, Matteson had a
steal and a lay-in and Papineau
hit a free throw to increase the
M ustangs’ lead to 34-17.
Papineau scored on a rebound
the Mustangs a 36-19 lead.
The Tigers outscored Heppner
18-14 in the third to close to within
50-37 going into the fourth.
Matteson started out the fourth
with a three and, after four straight
by the Tigers, hit his fourth three-
pointer of the game to make it 56-
41. McCabe scored and Stefan
Matheny hit a three-pointer to
make it 61-43 to put the Tigers
away.
Matteson finished with a game-
high 30 points on 12-18 shooting,
including 4-6 three-pointers. He
also had seven rebounds and four
steals. McCabe ended up with 15
points, had three steals and
grabbed four rebounds. Papineau
had seven points and five re
bounds. Matheny had seven
points, four assists and three
steals.
The Mustangs will be at home
this Friday, Jan. 14, against
Weston-McEwen and will travel
on Saturday to play Sherman
County.

throws to ice the win for the Mus
tangs.
Matteson hit three three-point
ers and finished with a game-high
17 points. Amy Papineau had a
double-double with 10 points, 10
rebounds, plus two steals.
Ingraham had nine points, nine
lebounds and two assists. Riet
mann had six points and nine re
bounds.
The Mustangs are at home on
Friday to play Weston-McEwen
and travel to Moro on Saturday to
play Sherman County.

Camie Burright was on fire,
scoring 11 of the 15 points
scored in the first quarter.
Burright continued to release her
fury for a total of 23 total points
and robbed five steals from the
Grizzlies. Nikki McElligott
scored 16 points, grabbed four
steals, brought down 17 rebounds
and dished out six assists for the
lone team. Brandi Brantley and
Kristina Powell were a reckoning
force on the boards, grabbing six
rebounds each for lone.

The lone varsity men played a
well executed game, defeating
the Heppner Mustangs in a close
game, 58-51, on Tuesday,
January 4, in lone.

The fourth quarter was action-
packed, as lone scored 22 points
and Heppner scored 18 for a

Sophomore Brad Burright led
the lone squad with 20 points.
Burright shot 90 percent at the
free throw line. Mark McElligott
had 15 points to his credit by the
end of the game. McElligott also
led«be team in rebounds, steals
and assists. David Mansfeld had
an outstanding game. Mansfeld
grabbed seven rebounds, dished
out three assists and shot 83
percent from the floor to score a
total of 11 points for the
Cardinals.

The Lady Cardinals dominated
the Blue Devils on the boards,
snatching 31 of 50 rebounds with
the help of Brandi Brantley and
Amellia Peck who brought down
five rebounds each.
