lone 'C' team loses to Spray
M ustang girls fall to Rockets Mustang boys fall to Cardinals

The lone "C" team hosted the
Spray Eagles on Thursday,
January 6. Spray walked away
victorious, defeating lone ,39-28.
Mike Radie, Koby Rea and
Cayle Krebs played outstanding
defense.

sophomore drove through the
middle o f the key to score.
Andrew Rietmann led the lone
men with 10 points, seven
rebounds, two checked shots and
two steals. Koby Rea robbed four
balls from Spray and handed out
three assists. The lone men shot
62 percent from the line.
Coach Jim Swanson said he was
pleased with the level of play
that the Cardinal men displayed
on Thursday. "They are a good
bunch of kids and give 110
percent at all times," said
Swanson.
M ustang boys lose to Rockets
The Pilot Rock Rockets made
16 of 22 free throws in the fourth
quarter to come away with a 58-
55 win over the visiting Heppner
Mustangs on Friday, Jan. 7. The
Mustangs controlled the game for
32 minutes, leading 51-50, with a
minute left but the Rockets made
8-10 free throws in the last minute
to get the win.
The Mustangs took a 14-11
lead after one, getting two three-
pointers from Ashley Ropp, a
three-point play from Casey
Ingraham and a three-pointer from
Lacey Matteson. The Mustangs
led 25-16 after a three-point play
by Meghan Bailey and led 28-23
at halftime after a three-pointer
by Marissa McCabe.
Shelley Rietmann began the
third quarter with two rebound
baskets, and a free throw by
Ingraham gave the Mustangs their
biggest lead at 33-23 early in the
’ third. TheMfotangs'led 37-31 on
a lay-in by Trisha Adams but a
Rocket three-pointer at the buzzer
closed the gap to 40-36.
The Rockets took a 48-45 lead,
but Ropp hit a three-pointer with

2:25 left to tie it and Matteson
scored on a three-point play to give
the Mustangs a 51-48 lead with
1:49 left. Rietmann hit two free
throws after the Rockets had
taken a 55-51 lead to get within
two, but the Mustangs couldn't
overcome the Rocket free throws.
Matteson finished with 12
points to lead a balanced scoring
attack. Ropp had nine points,
three assists and two steals.
Ingraham had nine points despite
limited playing time due to foul
trouble. Rietmann had eight points
and seven rebounds while Amy
Papineau had five points and
seven rebounds.

Host lone Cardinalsjumped out
to a seven point lead in the first
quarter and held it at the end,
beating the Heppner Mustang
boys’ varsity 58-51 on Jan. 4 in
the final pre-season game for both
teams.
The Cardinals led 13-6 after
one and built their lead to 19-8
before the Mustangs got a basket
from Joe Papineau, a rebound
basket from Craig Scott, a jumper
from Stefan Matheny and a re­
bound basket from Ryan
Matteson to cut the lead to 19-16.
The Mustangs could get no closer
as the Cardinals took a 26-21 lead
at halftime.
The Cardinals held a 32-25 lead
midway through the third before
Blake Knowles hit on a rebound
basket, Matheny hit a jumper and
Scott scored on a steal and lay-in
to make it 32-31 with two min­
utes left. lone hit two free throws
but Papineau came back with a
rebound basket to make it 34-33.
The Cardinals pulled away in
the fourth quarter as they made
12 of 21 free throws and led by
as much as 11 points. The Mus­
tangs cut the lead to four points a
couple of times but couldn't get
the shots to fall when they needed
them.
Matheny led the Mustangs with
14 points and three assists.
Knowles had 10 points, nine re­
bounds and two steals. McCabe
had eight points, six rebounds and
three steals. Papineau had eight
points and five rebounds.
Matteson had five rebounds and
two assists.
lone was led by Brad Bumght
with 20 points, including 7-7 free
throws in the fourth quarter. Mark
McElligott had 15 points.

JV boys beat
Tigers ^et split

The Heppner Mustang JV boys
hung on to beat the Stanfield Ti­
gers, 41-39, to get a split of their
weekend games on Saturday, Jan.
8. The Mustangs held a 27-13 lead
at halftime as David Piper had two
three-pointers and 15 points. The
Mustangs still led by 12 after three,
but the Tigers battled back to
within one with two minutes left.
Kevin Drake hit a three-pointer
to make it 40-36 and the Mustangs
held on to win 41-39. Piper fin­
ished with 18 points, Drake, nine,
and Justin Wood had six.
On Friday night, Jan. 7, the
Mustangs fell behind 21-9 after
one and could never get into the
game as they lost in Pilot Rock to
the Rockets, 64-45. Piper had 13
points, Wood, seven, and Brad
Adams and Sam Van Liew each
scored six. Brad Bowman hit 4-5
free throws.
The Mustangs’ record now
stands at 6-4 with games this
weekend in Heppner against
Weston-McEwen and at Moro
against Sherman County.

couldn’t recover.
Brett Barber led the Mustangs
with 11 points, including a three-
pointer. Jodie Carlson made 7-8
free throws and finished w ith nine
points.
At Stanfield, the Mustangs
jumped out to a 16-2 lead after
one and never looked back, lead­
ing 31-10 at halftime and 44-15
after three quarters.
Barber hit three three-pointers
and finished with 17 points as all
of the Mustangs scored at least
three points. Jenni Patton scored
12 points, had 13 rebounds and
five steals. Carlson scored eight
points and had five steals. Kelsey
Greenup scored seven points and
pulled down seven rebounds.
Jesse Gutierrez had seven points
and Sarah Eckman had six re­
bounds.
The girls’ record now stands
at 6-3 on the year, with their next
game against Weston-McEwen at
3 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 14.
