Mustangs get exciting win
over Joseph Eagles

Craig Scott Hit the first o f two
free throws with no time left to
give the Heppner Mustangs a 53-
52 win over the visiting Joseph
Eagles on Thursday, Dec.23, in
one of the more exciting games
played in the Heppner gym in
quite awhile.
The Mustangs got revenge for
an earlier defeat at Joseph and
the win was their fifth in a row to
improve their record to 7- 4 in the
pre-season.
The Eagles jumped out to an 11-
3 lead as the Mustangs' only
points were a three-pointer from
Ryan Matteson. Clint Bellamy
scored twice on nice passes from
Scott, then Scott made two
baskets to make it 13-11. The
Eagles hit a three-pointer but
Scott came back to hit a three-
pointer of his own at the buzzer to
make it 16-14 after one.
The Eagles came out on fire in
the second quarter, building a 15-
point lead before a basket by Joe
Papineau made it 34-21 at
halftime.
Blake Knowles began the third
quarter with a steal and jumper
and Matheny hit a running
jumper, but the Mustangs still
trailed 38-25. A three-pointer by
Matteson, two free throws by
Knowles and another long three-
pointer by Matteson narrowed the
lead to 38-33. A rebound basket
by Papineau and Knowles'jumper
closed out the quarter with the
Eagles ahead 42-38.
The Eagles still led 47-41 before
Scott hit two free throws,
Knowles scored on a rebound
basket and free throw and
Matheny hit a running baseline
jumper to give the Mustangs a 48-
47 lead with 3:25 left.
The Eagles retook the lead but
Matteson came back with a
jumper and Knowles scored with
a minute left to give the Mustangs
a 52-49 lead.
The Eagles hit three free throws
to tie the game and were at the
line with eight seconds left with
two free throws coming. The
Eagles missed both free throws
and, after the rebound put-back
missed, Knowles pulled down the
rebound and hit Matheny who
dribbled across half court, fed
Scott who was fouled on his lay
up attempt as the red light on the
backboard came on. Scott hit the
first free throw to end the game,
giving the Mustangs the win.
Scott led the Mustangs with 14
points, four steals and three
assists. Matteson hit for 13 and
Knowles scored 12 points, pulled
down nine rebounds, had three
steals and two assists. Papineau
had six rebounds and Matheny
had three assists.
The Mustangs have one more
non-league game against the lone
Cardinals in lone on Tuesday,
Jan. 4, before beginning CBC
play in Pilot Rock on Friday, Jan
7.

Mustangs rally to
beat cardinals

Three days ago the Heppner
Mustangs jumped out early on
the lone Cardinals and won by 23
points. The return engagement in
Heppner on Tuesday, Dec 21,
was a different story as the
MtfSla'rtgs'bad td rally into the
second half to come away with a
56-43 win to improve their record
to 6 and 4.
The Cardinals led 11-8 after one
and clung to a 24-23 lead at
halftime. The Mustangs used
their press to gain the lead,
outscoring the cardinals 13-7 in
the third and getting seven points
from Michael McCabe.
The Mustangs kept the pressure
on in the fourth, getting eight
points from Blake Knowles and
six more from McCabe to get the
win.
Knowles and McCabe led the
Mustangs with 18 points each.
Knowles also had seven
rebounds, three steals and two
assists and McCabe added five
rebounds and three steals. Clint
Bellamy pulled down six
rebounds and Ryan Matteson
scored seven points, had five
rebounds and two assists. Craig
Scott also had two assists.
Brad Burnght led the Cardinals
with 14 points and Mark
McElligott added 12.
