SIX • Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, December 22, 1999 lone Lady Cardinals win county tourney, boys second The lone Cardinals hosted Heppner, Klickitat and Huntington at the South Morrow County Tournament this past weekend. The lone Lady Cardinals conquered the Klickitat Vandals, 56-45. Nikki McElligott was the leading team member with 18 points, 15 rebounds, four steals and seven assists. Sophomore Amellia Peck had an outstanding appearance, ending the game with 16 points. Shelby Krebs led the Cardinals with rebounds, while Camie Bumght robbed the Vandals four times during the game. The Vandals came out strong the first quarter, outsconng the Lady Cardinals. 20-12. lone turned up the intensity in the second quarter, scoring 16 points and holding Klickitat to six points for a close score o f 28-26 at half time. The Vandals had a small quarter immediately after the half and were unable to make up the difference by the end of the game. The lone men squared off against Huntington their first game of the tournament, totally dominating the Locomotives, 53- 32. Sophomore Brad Bumght led the lone squad with 15 points, followed by Mark McElligott with 13 points. McElligott also led the lone team in blocked shots and assists. Allan Gribskov secured the most rebounds for lone. David Mansfeld had three steals to his credit. lone successfully made 46 percent o f their shot attempts from the floor, while Huntington made only 26 percent. The Lady Cardinals advanced to the championship round on Saturday to defeat Heppner, 51 - 43. .Nikki McElligott once again led the Cardinals with 18 points scored, 10 rebounds and six assists. Her- partner in crime, Camie Bumghf; ‘'steered 15 points, grabbed seven rebounds and handed out six assists. Amellia Peck scored 11 points for the Cardinals and seized seven rebounds as well. The lone men also advanced to the championship round on Saturday but Heppner came out with a 79-56 victory over lone. Heppner's Ryan Matteson did the most destruction to the lone team with a total of 22 points. Brad Burright led the lone squad with 25 points. Bumght also had 12 rebounds, three blocked shots and two steals. Allan Gribskov also hit the boards, snagging 10 rebounds. Mark McElligott added nine points to the lone score and delivered five assists. Heppner C team boys down lone By Rick Paullus The Heppner M ustang “C ” team boys used good free throw shooting to beat the lone Cardi­ nals. 63-41. in lone on Tuesday, Dec. 14. Donald Adams scored eight first-quarter points but the Mus­ tangs trailed 17-16 after the first quarter. The Mustangs outscored the Cardinals 32-13 in the second and third quarters to take a big lead and coasted from there to get the win. The win improved the “C” team's record to 2-2. Kelly Paullus hit 11-16 free throws on his way to a game-high 19 points. Adams ended up with 16 and Doug Orwick scored 12 points. The Mustangs hit on 23- 46 free throws for the game. By Rick Paullus ...ft A 43-16 advantage in the sec­ ond half helped the Heppner Mus­ tang girls to a 68-45 win over the visiting Umatilla Vikings on Tues­ day, Dec. 14. The Mustangs im­ proved to 5-2 in the preseason. Ashley Ropp hit two three- pointers to help the Mustangs to a 19-9 lead after one. The Vikings came back to lead 29-25 at half­ time. Heppner came back in the third to lead 42-35 after three, then exploded for 26 points in the fourth to blow the game open. Casey Ingraham scored 14 points in the quarter, including 5-6 from the free throw line and Shelley Rietmann scored seven. Ingraham finished w ith a game-high 30 points, nine re­ bounds, four steals and two as­ sists. Lacey M atteson had 13 points and Rietmann had 11 points and 10 rebounds. San Juanita Elguezabal pulled down seven re­ bounds and had four steals and Ropp also had four steals. Dec. 18. The Mustangs won their third game in a row to im­ prove their pre-season record to 5-4. To get to the championship game, the M ustangs beat the Klickitat Vandals, 76-48. on Fri­ day. Dec. 17. Michael McCabe scored nine first quarter points as the Mus­ tangs blew out to a 24-10 lead af­ ter one. McCabe. Brian Rust and Ryan Matteson each hit three points in the quarter. Chip Piper hit two three-point­ ers to start the second quarter and Rust hit another at the end as the Mustangs took a 38-23 lead at halftime. McCabe scored nine more in the third quarter as the Mustangs put the game away, taking a 57- 31 lead after three. McCabe led all scorers with 22 points and Rust hit four three- pointers for 12 points. Piper added 10 points. Matteson pulled down six rebounds and McCabe five. Stefan Matheny dished out four assists and had seven steals. Craig Scott had seven steals and three assists. McCabe also had three assists. McCabe began the lone game by hitting a three-pointer and Matteson had a three, and a three point play as the Mustangsjumped out to a 15-2 lead. Blake Know les hit a rebound basket to close out the first quarter with the Mustangs ahead 22-8. Matteson hit two three-point­ ers and Piper one, as the Mus­ tangs built their lead to 42-24 at halftime. The Cardinals hit two quick baskets to start the third but Joe Papineau hit a short jumper while Matheny hit a running jumper to build the lead back to 46-28. Matteson hit back-to-back three- pointers and Clint Bellamy scored on a nice pass from Scott to build the lead to 54-30 The Cardinals came back to cut the lead to 56- 38 after three and scored to begin the fourth quarter to cut the lead to 16. Knowles hit a rebound basket and a Cardinal three-pointer made it 58-43, but Knowles scored on a nice pass from M atteson and McCabe scored on a three-point play to build the lead to 63-43. The Mustangs and Cardinals traded baskets the rest of the way as the Mustangs finished out with a 79-56 lead. Matteson hit five three-point­ ers to finish with 22 points and four steals. McCabe had 16 points and seven rebounds. Bellamy finished with a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Knowles had 10 points and three steals. Matheny had six assists and two blocked shots. The lone women lost to the Heppner Mustangs by one point. 31-32. lone had a slow start in the first quarter, scoring only five points and allowing the Fillies to score 12. The Lady Cardinals struggled even more so in the second quarter. Salli McElligott was the lone scorer on the lone team with two free throws for two points. At half time lone was down 19-7. The lone ladies came out in the third quarter on a mission to undo the damage that Heppner had done. lone scored 14 points in the third quarter, thanks to two three-point shots by Olivia Thompson, and kept Heppner at only four points. Thompson successfully canned another three-point shot in the fourth quarter and by the end of the game the Lady Cardinals were only down one point. Leading scorer was Olivia Thompson with 16 points. Tracy Griffith led the lone team with rebounds. Salli McElligott handed out the most assists on the team Jeanette Brantley. Olivia Thompson. Sheena Christman and Miranda McElligott all had three steals each. Coach. Ryan Rudolf said he was impressed with Olivia Thompson's shooting and was pleased with the way the girls played during the second half after having such a deficit at the end of the first half. Richard Campbell was the leading scorer for lone with 16 points. Campbell also had three steals to his credit. Karl Morgan lead the team with assists and Cody Erickson led the team with rebounds. lone shot 50 percent from the free throw line while Heppner shot 47 percent. This was the first time the "C" team has played this year and coach Jim Swanson said he was extremely satisfied with their performance. By Rick Paullus The Heppner Mustang girls’ varsity team finished second in the South Morrow County Tourna­ ment after losing to the host lone Cardinals, 51-43, on Saturday, Dec. 19. The Mustangs beat the Huntington Locomotives on Fri­ day, Dec. 18, 72-20, to reach the championship game. The M ustangs com pletely dominated the Locos by taking a 20-2 lead after one and a 43-4 lead at halftime. Casey Ingraham led four Mus­ tangs in double figures with 16 points. Lacey Matteson hit three three-pointers and finished with 13 points. Ashley Ropp also hit three three-pointers and had 11 points, as did Meghan Bailey. Trisha Adams had four re­ bounds and three steals and Amy Papineau had three rebounds and three steals. Shelley Rietmann had four rebounds and Brett Barber had four assists and three steals. Against lone, the Mustangs fell behind 4-0 but got eight points from Rietmann and four points from Ingraham to take a 14-11 lead after one. The Cardinals came back to take a 19-16 lead but a three- pointer by Matteson tied it. The Cardinals, however, came back to take a 26-21 lead at halftime. Ropp hit a three-pointer to start the third quarter and. after two baskets by lone, hit three free throws to narrow the lead to 30- 26. Adams scored on a nice pass from Papineau to cut the lead to 32-28. but the Cardinals closed out the quarter with a 36-28 lead. Rietmann scored to open the fourth to cut the lead to 36-30, but the Cardinals scored four straight to take a 10 point lead. Both teams traded baskets as Rietmann scored four points then b ack-to-back bask ets by Ingraham and Papineau closed the gap to 44-38. However, the Mus­ tangs could get no closer as the C ardinals m ade enough free throws down the stretch to hang on for the win. Rietmann had a good all-around game for the Mustangs with 16 points and three steals. Ropp fin­ ished with nine points and five assists. Ingraham had eight points in limited playing time due to foul trouble. Papineau had eight re­ bounds and three steals. Matteson pulled down six rebounds.
