The Heppner Mustang boys

the visiting Umatilla Vikings,
losing 72-34 on Monday, Dec. 6.
The Mustangs were down just
12-6 after one but fell behind 38-

Paullus led the Mustangs with

JV boys fall short at Joseph
The Heppner Mustang JV boys
basketball team fell behind early
and nearly came all the way back
but fell to the Joseph Eagles, 47-
46, in Joseph on Saturday, Dec.
4.
The Mustangs fell behind 15-6
after one and were behind by as
much as 16 in the second half
before mounting a comeback.
Brian Rust hit a three-pointer and
Justin Wood hit five of six free
throws in the fourth to lead the
comeback.
The Mustangs took the lead by
one with 10 seconds left, but the
Eagles scored with five seconds
left to take the win.
Rust hit on three three-pointers
on his way to 13 points and
Wood ended up hitting eight of
10 free throws, scoring 10 points.
Chip Piper and Sam VanLiew
each added eight points.
The JVs' next game will be in

Tone Cardinals lose to Rockets
The lone Cardinal varsity men
couldn’t quite keep up with the
Pilot Rock Rockets, losing their
first game of the season. 88-60,
on Nov. 30.
Brad Burright, a powerhouse
for the lone team, was the lead­
ing scorer for the Cardinals with
16 points. Burright also brought
down the most rebounds for lone,
accompanied by Cory Bennetto
who had 11 rebounds to his credit.
Bennetto also was noted as a key
player by coach Dennis Stefani,
who said, “Bennetto did an excel­
lent job on the boards for our
team.”
Mark McElligott and Jacob
Neiffer hit the only two three-
point shots in the game, McElligott
in the second quarter and Neiffer
in the fourth quarter. Coach
Stefani said he was impressed
with Korey Morgan. “He (Mor­
gan) did an excellent job of bring­
ing the ball down the court for us,”
said Stefani. Morgan also had
three steals from the Pilot Rock
team.
Senior Allan Gribskov shot 80
percent from the free throw line
for the Cardinals and contributed
12 points to the Cardinals. The
lone men out-rebounded the Pilot
Rock team pulling down 47 of the
90 rebounds.
Lady Card JVs fall to Pilot Rock
The Lady Cardinal JV team fell
to the Pilot Rock Rockets on Nov.
30, losing the game, 54-20.
Sophomore Salli McElligott and
freshman Tracy Griffith each
brought six points to the Cardinal
score.

quarter tight, ending the quarter
at 7-6, but Pilot Rock pulled away
in the second quarter and the Lady
Cardinals were unable to keep up
with the Rockets.
McElligott canned the only
three-point shot for the Cardinals,
while Griffith shot 75 percent from
the floor.
Mustang JVs beat Condon
lone teams participate in
basketball tourneys
The lone Cardinal basketball
teams traveled to the other side
ot the Blue Mountains to play in
tournaments the first part of the
month, with the lone varsity teams
participating in the Enterprise
Tournament and the junior varsity
teams participating in the Wallowa
Tournament.
On Dec. 3, the lone varsity
boys suffered a loss at the hands
of Enterprise, 47-45. At the end
of the third quarter, lone had a 17
point lead but Enterprise had a
huge fourth quarter, scoring 23
points and holding the Cardinals
to only four points.
Brad Burright was the leading
scorer for the lone team with 16
points, aided by Korey Morgan
and his 10 point contribution. Cory
Bennetto was the leading
rebounder for the Cardinals.
On Dec. 4, the Cardinals chal­
lenged Wallowa High School, fall­
ing to Wallowa, 42-34.
Mark McElligott was the high
scorer for lone with 16 points.
McElligott also grabbed three
steals and handed off five assists.
David Mansfeld contributed six
points to the Cardinal effort, shoot­
ing 60 percent from the floor.
Bennetto was again the reckon­
ing force on the boards, leading
the Cardinals in rebounds.
The Lady Cardinal varsity team
relentlessly hammered Wallowa
by defeating the Cougars, 46-18.
Nikki McElligott scored 17
points, grabbed 23 rebounds and
had five steals. Allison Halvorsen
scored 13 points, pulled down 12
rebounds, dished out three assists
and also took two steals to her
credit. Camie Burright lead the
Lady Cardinals with eight assists.
The lone ladies returned on
Saturday to defend their winning
streak by squaring off against
Enterprise. The Lady Cardinals
went into double overtime before
losing to Enterprise, 53-51.
Nikki McElligott was once

points, followed by Camie
Burright with 18 points. Burright
made 75 percent of her free throw
attempts, while McElligott re­
mained a dominant force, leading
the team in rebounds, assists,
blocked shots and steals.
While the varsity teams com­
peted in Enterprise, the junior var­
sity teams were in a battle of their
own in Wallowa. Both the Lady
Cardinals and the Cardinal boys
brought home the second place
tournament honors.
Stats for the lone JV boys were
unavailable at presstime.
The Lady Cardinals JV team
competed against Enterprise for
their first game of the tournament,
defeating Enterprise, 25-15.
Jeanette Brantley led the Lady
Cards with six points. Nonnee
Walters contributed five points,
one a three-point shot in the sec­
ond quarter. Jennifer Thompson
and Diana McElligott contributed
four points each to the Cardinal
cause.
Enterprise jumped out in the
first quarter, leading the Cardinals,
3-1, with Salli McElligott the lone
scorer for lone. The Cardinals
came out in the second quarter
unloading nine points and holding
Enterprise to a scoreless quarter.
Once again, Enterprise out-
scored the Cardinals in the third
quarter, making seven points to
lone’s four points, but lone came
back and gave their all, scoring an
additional 11 points and holding
Enterprise to five points in the
fourth quarter.
The Lady Cardinals returned on
Saturday to play against Pilot
Rock, falling to the Rockets, 34-
24.
Freshman Caitlin Orem lead the
lone team with six points, aided
by Cyndi Heagy and Jennifer Th­
ompson, each with four points.
Salli McElligott shot 67 percent at
the free throw line for lone.
JV girls down Condon

The Heppner Mustang girls JV
basketball team won their first
game of the season, beating the
visiting Condon Blue Devils, 42-
31, on Tuesday, Nov. 30.
After falling behind by nine
after one quarter, the Mustangs
shut out the Blue Devils 13-0 in
the second to take a 17-13
halftime lead. The Mustangs
pulled away in second half for
the 42-31 win.
Meghan Bailey and Brett
Barber led thfe MUstangs with 12
points each. Jenni Patton added
eight. Jesse Gutierrez and Barber
each hit three-pointers.

Boardman chamber plans speaker
Jonathan Ferrari will be the
featured speaker at the December
15 Boardman Chamber of
Commerce meeting.
The
Chamber Board of Directors and
committee chairs will also be
recognized for 1999 leadership
and service responsibilities.
Ferrari is a community
development intern with the
University of Oregon RARE
Program. While in Boardman he
will focus on the process of
development of a Boardman
downtown master plan.

The Heppner Mustang boys'
JV basketball team won their
first game of the season over the
visiting Condon Blue Devils, 43-
33, on Tuesday, Nov. 30.
The Mustangs were down 9-8
after one despite David Piper’s
six points in the quarter. Brad
Adams scored eight points in the
second quarter as the Mustangs
came back to take a 20-17 lead at
halftime.
The Mustangs blew open the
game in the third quarter,
outsconng the Blue Devils 16-5,
and hung on in the fourth for the
ten point win.

with Joseph win

After falling behind 10-3 after
the first quarter, the Heppner
Mustang JV girls' team used a
huge second half to easily beat
the Joseph E-gals, 55-27, in
Joseph on Saturday, Dec. 4.
The Mustangs used two three-
pointers by Jesse Gutierrez in the
second quarter to stay close as
the halftime score was 20-15.
The Mustangs came out
smoking in the third quarter,
getting seven points each from
Meghan Bailey and Brett Barber
and outscoring Joseph 21-2 to
take a 36-22 lead after three.

the lone boys’ JV basketball team
against the Pilot Rock Rockets on
Nov. 30.
Rietmann had an excellent
game, blocking two Rocket bas­
kets and nabbing two steals from
the Rockets.

St. Patrick’s Senior Center New
Year’s Eve party on Friday, Dec.
