Mustangs fall to Warriors, 42-22, end season 10-1

The Heppner Mustangs'
football season came to an end
on Saturday, November 20, at the
home of the defending 2A
champions, the Amity Warriors,
by a score of 42-22. The
Mustangs ended their successful

Heppner came out fired up in
the third quarter and, after
Schonbachler tackled a Warrior
runner for a six-yard loss, Amity
had to punt for the first time.
The Mustangs couldn't move
the ball, however, and were
forced to punt.
Knowles tackled a Warrior
runner for a five-yard loss to set
up a fourth and long as the

• Hie Mustangs’ defense again
played tough as Jake Roy,
Schonbachler and Joe Papine&u
combined to tackle an Amity
runner for a five-yard loss, then
Knowles, Schonbachler and
Papineau combined to sack the
Warriors’ quarterback for a nine-
yard loss to force a punt.
Scott returned the punt 30
yards to the Warrior 30-yard line.
Scott then made a great catch on
a pass from Matteson for an 11 -
yard gain. Matteson then hit
Stefan Matheny for a 19-yard
touchdown pass. McCabe then
took a pass from Matteson for the
two-point conversion to cut the
lead to 28-14 late in the third
quarter.
Amity then put the game out of
reach, marching the ball for two
consecutive touchdowns to take
a 42-14 lead.
The Mustangs wouldn't quit as
they took over at their own 28 for
their final drive of the season.
Scott ran three times for 13
yards, then took a hand-off and
threw a pass back to Matteson
good for 15 yards. On a double
hand-off pitch back to Matteson,
Matteson, just as he was getting
hit, launched a pass to Knowles
good for 41 yards. Scott ran for
one, setting up Schonbachler's
second touchdown of the game
on a one-yard run. McCabe ran
in the conversion to make the
final score 42-22.
The defense was again led by
Schonbachler and Clint Bellamy
with 32 and 21 points
respectfully. Knowles ended up
with 19 and Scott had 14.
McCabe and Matheny each

ended up with 11 points.
Scott had 10 cames for 38 yards
and McCabe had five carries for
32 yards. Schonbachler rushed
seven times for 24 yards and two
touchdowns.
Matteson ended up completing
six of 17 passes for 141 yards
and a touchdown.
McCabe had two receptions for
62 yards and Scott had two
receptions for 24 yards.

Katie is the daughter of Joe and Linda Kenny of Heppner. She is a
1998 graduate of Heppner High School and attended Blue Mountain
Community College in Pendleton. She is currently employed by Devin
Oil Company in Heppner.
Bret's parents are James and Barbara Elithorp of Troy, Alabama He
graduated from Oregon Institute of Technology at Klamath Falls in
December 1997. He is currently employed by Oregon Bridges
Engineering Consultants in Medford as a surveyor.
The couple plan a January 8, 2000, wedding at St. Patrick’s Catholic
Church in Heppner.
