Theresa Hams wins weight lifting world title
The citizens of the city of lone
can puff out their chests a little
bit more now. The town is now
the home of an Oregon State,
national and world champion
weight lifter.
In only her second competition.
Theresa Hams beat out the
competition at the Weight
Association Bench Dead Lift
Twinlabs World Championship
in Portland Nov. 5-6-7th, lifting
275 pounds in her last of four
lifts. Her closest competitor lifted
264 pounds, but tailed at 281.
Hams, 39, captured the sub
master division of the 34-39 age
group in the under 123 pounds
class.
"It was cool to have
competition," says Hams. "I have
a really good coach (Ross
Phillips, Hermiston). He kept me
calm and I didn't shake on any of
my lifts. I could have pulled 292.
None of my lifts were tough."
Over 500 people turned out for
the event, including those from
numerous states, Canada, New
Zealand, Brazil, Guatemala,
Finland, India and Brazil.
Hams, who lives in lone with
her husband and two children,
qualified
for
the
world
championship meet in May in the
Tn-Cities. She has only been
lifting for 11 months.
Hams plans to compete again
in Tri-Cities again this spring. By
then she hopes to be lifting 303.
By the next world championship
in Brazil next year she hopes to
be up to 386 pounds.
