Varsity Volleyball team lost a
heartbreaker to Culver on
Saturday, October 30, in
overtime.
The Culver team took the
Mustangs 15-11 in the first game
and 16-14 in the second, despite
87 percent serving and 95 percent
receiving on behalf of the
Mustangs.
Kim Pointer was hot on the
serving line with a 13-13 record.
She also made 22 attacks, five
kills, and two dinks. Pointer also
made four blocks and received at
1 - 0 .
Ashley Ropp was 9-12 at the
serving line for 75 percent. She
made three attacks, one kill, and
three dinks and was also 100
percent in receiving with two.
Abby Kahl was 100 percent in
serving with eight. She made

Amy Papineau was successful
in all of her seven serves, made
nine attacks, three kills and was
100 percent in receiving at 12.
Casey Ingraham was 5-6 at the
serving line for 83 percent: was

made four kills, four dinks and
was 14-15 for 93 percent in
receives.
Allison Sykes was 4-5 at the
serving line for 80 percent and
100 percent in receiving with 3.
Katie Shemtt was 2-3 in
serving for 66 percent; Tnsha
Adams, 1-2; and Stephanie
Clough and Macy Rhea both 1 -1
at the serving line.
Amy Drake made 10 attacks,
four kills, two dinks and had 100
percent serving.
Macy Rhea was 1-1 at the
serving line and 1-1 in receiving.

lone Lady Cardinals will
travel to The Dalles on Saturday,
November 6 to square off with
Wasco County for the first place
berth for the 1A State Volleyball
Tournament.
The tournament begins at 2
p.m. at Wahtonka High School.
Teams participating in the
tournament will be lone,
Condon, South Wasco County
and Dufur.
The Lady Cardinals bring a
league record of 8-0 and a
season record of 25-2, losing
twice to the Heppner Fillies.
Coach Charity McElligott
seems
optimistic
about
Saturday's tournament, noting
that any four of the teams in
attendance are capable of
advancing to the state playoffs.
"It's up to the team to decide
how far they want to go.

A "smoking" Mustangs Varsity
Volleyball
team
defeated
Weston-McEwen Tuesday night
in two games for first place in the
Columbia Basin Conference
Eastern Division.
The Mustangs, who split their
two previous match-ups with
Weston-McEwen, will play
Sherman County (CBC Western
Division) for first place in the
league this Saturday, November
6, at Athena, beginning at 3 p.m.
Dp until their victory Tuesday
night, the Mustangs had been
knocked down to second in the
Eastern Division behind first-
place
W eston-M cEwen,
following their loss to the Culver
Bulldogs Saturday, 15-11, 16-4.
If the Mustangs beat Sherman
County, they will be the first
place team from the CBC into the
state tournament, set for
Thursday-Saturday, November
11-13, at Lane Community
College at Eugene. If the
Mustangs lose to Sherman
County, they will play for second
place.
The first place team from the
CBC will play in the state
tournament at LCC on Thursday,
Nov. 11. beginning at 7 p.m. The
second place team from the CBC
will play on Thursday at 2 p.m.
Dutch Elm disease invades Heppner
Dutch elm disease, a disease
that infects American elms has
been discovered in Heppner,
probably brought in on infected
firewood.
Jim Jepsen of Dobyns Pest
Control made a presentation to
the Heppner City Council on
October 11 advising the council
of the problem. The American
Elms in City Park have been
positively identified with the
disease. "There is no cure for
the disease once it has infected
the tree," said a news release.
"Sadly, those trees must be
removed.."
The George Washington and
Martha
Washington
elms
planted in the island of City Park
are two of the infected trees.
These trees were planted in 1932
to commemorate the one
hundred year anniversary of
George Washington's birthday.
In order to save other
American elms in the area it is
necessary that the trees be
completely removed to below
the soil level, continued the
release. Dead and dying elms
infected with Dutch elm disease
are a prime source of spread for
the disease. Replacement trees

of a different variety will be
replanted at a later date.
Elm bark beetles that tunnel
into Dutch elm disease infected
wood pick up spores of the
fungus that causes the disease
and pass the disease to healthy
trees when they bore into them.
Because the disease is still
present in wood cut from the
trees, it is important that all
affected wood be burned,
chipped or buried and stumps
removed to at least eight inches
below ground level For this
reason, unless the wood is to be
burned within a short time,
affected elm wood should never
be stored as firewood unless it is
treated
according
to
recommendations
by
the
Morrow County Extension
Agent. The disease may also be
spread from tree to tree through
root grafts where trees are
grow ing within fifty feet of each
other.
Several other elms in Heppner
have been identified with the
disease.

concerned with their trees should
contact Kathryn Kettel at the
Morrow' County Extension
office at 676-9642 for more
information.
The Heppner JV Volleyball
team is still hot, continuing their
winning streak with five more
wins in a row.
The JV Mustangs have added
Stanfield,
Weston-McEwen,
Sherman County, Pilot Rock and
Culver to their long list of wins.
Heppner beat Stanfield
October 19, 15-3, 11-15, 15-6.
Manssa McCabe was top
scorer with 15-19 serving,
including one ace. Shelley
Rietmann had 100 percent
serving with 11-13.
Mindy
Smith was 6-8 at the serving
line.. Four Mustangs were 2-4,
Julie Proctor, Jodie Carlson,
Krista Adams and San Juanita
Elguezabal. Brett Barber chipped
in one.
The
Weston-McEwen
Tigerscots went down to the
Mustangs October 21, 15-10, 13-
15, 15-13.
Shelley Rietmann was 12-14 at
the serving line with two aces.
SanJuanita Elguezabal was 7-9
with three aces. Jodie Carlson
was 5-7 with two aces. Jenni
Patton and Brett Barber were
both 3-5. Manssa McCabe also
made three points with 3-7
serving. Mandy Sneddon was 2-3
and Knsta Adams and Meghan
Bailey both 2-4. Mindy Smith
and Julie Proctor were both 1-2.
The JV Mustangs beat Sherman
County in two, 17-15, 15-12.
Brett Barber served 11-15,
including two aces. Claire
Anderson was 7-10 and Jodie
Carlson was 5-6, one ace. Jenni
Patton was 3-4 and SanJuanita
Elguezabal was 3-5, including
two aces. Shelley Rietmann was
2-3 and Julie Proctor 1-2.
Heppner Beat Pilot Rock in two
15-11, 15-11 on October 26.
Knsta Adams made five points
for the team, serving 5-8. Shelley
Rietmann and Jenni Patton each
chipped in 4 points, including
one ace apiece, Rietmann with 4-
6 serving and Patton, 4-7. Four
Mustangs contributed three
points apiece-Jodie Carlson, 3-4,
and SanJuanita Elguezabal,
Mindy Smith and Manssa
McCabe, all 3-5. Brett Barber
made two points for the
Mustangs with 2-7 serving and
Lacey Matteson, Julie Proctor
and Claire Anderson added one
apiece with 1-3 serving.
The Mustangs beat Stanfield
again, this time in two on
October 28, 15-9, 15-12.
Shelley Rietmann was top
scorer for the team with eight
points, including one ace.
Rietmann
served
8-12.
SanJuanita Elguezabal served 6-
12 with three aces. Meghan
Bailey also contributed three
aces, serving 6-9. Bret Barber
had 4-5 serving with one ace.
Jodie Carlson and Jenni Patton
were both 2-5 at the serving line.
Carlson also had an ace. Claire
Anderson and Mindy Smith each
chipped m one.
The JV Mustangs defeated
Culver in three games, 15-8,12-
15,15-8 on October 30.
Meghan Bailey took top honors
for the game, making 13-16
serves, including two aces.
Marissa McCabe was 8-10 at
the serve line, one ace. Knsta
Adams made five points with 5-
9 serving, including two aces.
Four Mustangs made three
points each-Claire Anderson
with 3-4 serving, Jenni Patton
and Brett Barber, both 3-5 , and
Shelley Rietmann, 3-6.
SanJuanita Elguezabal and
Jodie Carlson each made two
points.
The JV Mustangs' last game of
the season was Tuesday, Nov. 2,
against Culver.
Mustangs to play in first
round state playoffs
The Heppner Mustang Football
team will play at home for the
first round of the state playoffs
Saturday, November 13. The
time and opponents have not yet
been announced.
The Mustangs, champions of
the Columbia Basin Conference,
will play either Regis, Colton or
Scio, in a three-way tie for first
place in their league. If a team
does not emerge as champion of
their league after Friday's game.

decided by a toss of the com.
Tickets, which are set by the
Oregon
School
Athletic
Association, will be $6 for adults
and $4 for students. Tickets are
available at Heppner High
School.
The Mustangs will play Pilot
ttock in the last regular game of
the season this Friday, November
5, at 7:30 p.m. at the Morrow
County Fairgrounds.
More shelter-in-place kits available
Imgon residents new to the
area or who did not receive a
shelter-in-place kit are invited to
contact the Morrow County
Chemical Stockpile Emergency
Preparedness Program (CSEPP)
and obtain their kit now.
Morrow County CSEPP
ordered an additional 400 kits to
cover shortfalls in the Irrigon
area due to increases in the
population since the first kits
were ordered and distributed
earlier this year.
CSEPP is mandated to provide
maximum
protection
for
residents living near the
Umatilla Chemical Depot in the
event of a chemical weapons
accident at the depot. Shelter-in-
place kits allow residents living
within five miles of the depot to
prepare for such an accident.
Morrow County shelter-in-place
kits contain heavy plastic, duct
tape, caulking, scissors and a
towel and are supplemented with
a videotape and brochure
explaining how to effectively
shelter-in-place.
Outlet
protectors that users can install
in a "safe" room are also
provided.

The lone Lady Cardinals
volleyball team hosted the South
Wasco County High School
Redsides on Oct. 29 and downed
the Redsides m two games, 15-8,
15-6.
Enn Crowell led the Lady
Cardinals with 10 points,
followed by Camie Bumght
with 8. Nikki McElligott was
strong at the net, bringing down
seven kills and seven spikes.
Camie Bumght also had
seven spikes and three kills.
Bumght also served four aces to
the Redsides.
Chanssa Gates brought in six
points, serving 100 percent for
the Cardinals.
Miranda McElligott had an
outstanding game. Her serves
were impressive; she covered
well at the net and hustled in the
back row to get good passes to
the setters.
Shelby Krebs also had a
noteworthy game with a
beautiful block in game one and
some superior saves in the front
row.
Brandi Brantley also hit hard
from the left front to aid the
Cardinal effort.
Coach Chanty McElligott was
pleased with the performance of
the entire team. "They came out
playing tough in the beginning
and never let up throughout the
match," she said.
The lone JV team struggled
against the Redsides, falling to
the South Wasco team 9-15, 12-
15.
Nonnee Walters was the lead
scorer for lone with eight points.
Walters also had two serves that
were unanswered by the
Redsides for two aces and
played excellent defense in the
back row.
Ashley Carmack served 100
percent, had one ace and scored
four points and led the team in
serve
receives.
Allison
Halvorsen led the lone squad at
the net hitting seven spikes and
one kill. Jeanette Brantley also
did an excellent job on defense
in the back row.
Cardinals
take win
over Falcons
The lone Lady Cardinal
volleyball team traveled to
Fossil to take on the Wheeler
Falcons on Saturday, October
30, and the Cardinal team
walked away, easily defeating
the Falcons. 15-8, 15-4.
Adrienne Swanson stepped up to
fill in for the absence of setter,
Erin Crowell, and had an
excellent match. Swanson belted
over 11 points to lead the
Cardinal team in scoring.
Camie Bumght was credited
with eight spikes. Nikki
McElligott brought in six spikes,
four kills and four dumps.
Diana McElligott had seven
points for the lone team and
teammate Amellia Peck did an
admirable job on defense in the
back row.
Peck also did a superior job on
the net, hitting several spikes.
The lone JV team fell to
Wheeler in two games, 11-15,
12-15. Ashley Carmack led the
Cardinals with seven points,
aided by Jeanette Brantley with
five points. Brantley played
excellent defense for the lone
team.
Allison Halvorsen was a fierce
contender at the net with six
spikes. Carmack, Halvorsen and
Brantley all served 100 percent
for the Lady Cardinals.
Wolf depredation
meeting planned
A meeting on "Wolf
Depredation" has been scheduled
for this Thursday, Nov. 7, at 7
p.m. at the John Day Senior Hall.
Wildlife Service wolf specialist
Carter Neimeyer will present a
slide show on wolf and other
predator depredation.
The meeing is hosted by the
Eastern Oregon Sportsman's
Association.
