Ione takes first place trophy at Dufur
The Lady Cardinal volleyball
squad proved why they are
defending state champions,
bringing home the first place
trophy
from the Ranger
Volleyball Tournament in Dufur
this weekend.
A total of 13 teams from
Oregon
and
Washington
participated in the tournament.
All teams were fairly equal in
their level of play and the
tournament proved to be an
excellent competition for all
teams attending.
The Lady Cardinals squared off
with Klickitat for their first
match. Klickitat moved around
the court well and was quick to
capitalize on the faults of the
lone team but the Cardinals
adjusted and downed the
Vandals in a tight match, 15-13,
15-10.
Erin Crowell, Nikki
McElligott, Charissa Gates and
Amellia Peck served 100 percent
for the Lady Cardinals. Nikki
McElligott and Camie Burright
led the team in hits. The score
was tied in game three when
Camie Burright dug up a pass
off of a diving dig that Charissa
Gates set up for Diana
McElligott. Diana tipped into
the open hole in the middle of
the court, changing the tide for
the Cardinals. Overall the team
served 94 percent and hits were
93 percent.
lone defeated Perrydale in their
second match of the tournament.
The lone squad served 91
percent and hit 89 percent at the
net. Camie Burright, Charissa
Gates, Amellia Peck, and Diana
McElligott served 100 percent
for the Cardinals.
The Cardinals were down by
one point in game two when
Erin Crowell had a significant
ace serve to tie the score.
Burright played exceptional ball
at the net, shooting a tip down
the line in game two to bring the
Cardinals over the Pirates.
Charissa Gates led the team in
set assists. Nikki McElligott is
credited with several kills at the
net.
The third match for lone was
far easier than the first two. The
Lady Cardinals dominated
Columbia Christian, 15-4, 15-6.
Erin Crowell led in set assists
and served 100 percent for the
Cardinals.
Charissa Gates,
Amellia Peck and Diana
McElligott also served 100
percent. Brandi Brantley hit hard
at the net, sending several balls
across court. Camie Bumght led
the team in spikes and had
effective blocking for the Lady
Cardinals. Nikki McElligott was
able to get a huge kill off of a
serve return from Columbia
Christian. The lone team served
93 percent and hit 92 percent at
the net.
In the fourth match the
Cardinals competed against
Days Creek, defeating them
easily the first game, 15-3.
The Wolves came back in the
second game to prove why they
were at the state championship
last year. The lone squad came
out on top, defeating the
Wolves, 16-14, in what seemed
to be a dog fight to the finish.
The Lady Cardinals performed
well at the net, hitting 97
percent, and brought in 86
percent of the serves they sent
over. They also played tough
defense, blocking 85 percent of
the hits at the net.
Camie Burright was the lead
scorer for lone with 10 points.
Burright also led the team with
spikes and kills, while Amellia
Peck sent over the final point of
the game which was unanswered
by Days Creek.
lone advanced to the
championship bracket to play
AI sea in what seemed to be a
repeat of the state championship
match of last fall. Alsea came
out tough and gave the Cardinals
a challenging match but it was
once again lone that came out on
top, defeating Alsea, 15-12, 8-
15, 15-6.
The team as a whole served 86
percent, hits were 90 percent and
blocked 86 percent of the hits
from the opponent.
Erin
Crowell served an impressive
ace to start out the first game;
Crowell also led the team in set
assists. Charissa Gates and Nikki
McElligott served 100 percent
for lone. McElligott also had 27
spikes to her credit, along with
four kills. Camie Burright was
the lead scorer for the Lady
Cardinals with 11 points.
After taking Alsea out of the
tournament, the Lady Cardinals
played
against
Stevenson.
Stevenson won the Ranger
tournament two consecutive
years prior to this year and was
on a mission to make this the
third. lone welcomed the
challenge and, after battling out
three games, defeated the
Bulldogs, 15-9, 14-16, 15-9.
Charissa Gates led the team in
set assists. Camie Burright
came through for the Lady
Cardinals, serving three aces to
Stevenson and tipped to the open
spots in the first game. Bumght
also led in hits and kills along
with
teammate
Nikki
McElligott. Sophomore Salli
McElligott had a monumental
kill off of a serve receive for the
lone squad Nikki McElligott
played tough on the net in the
third game.
Inconsistent serves plagued
the Bulldogs the first match and
the Cardinals forced errors on
the part of the Stevenson team in
game three, taking them out ot
the game to win the match.
Coach Charity McElligott was
pleased with the performance ot
the entire team. "The bench did
an outstanding job of stepping in
and playing good team ball. All
teams present were top level
teams and all matches were
tough," she said.
VB team loses league match
The Heppner Varsity
Volleyball team lost their first
league game of the season
against the Weston-McEwen
Tigerscots in three, 15-8, 6-15
and 8-15, in a home game
October 12.
Despite the loss, the Mustangs
had an 87 percent serving record
and 85 percent receiving.
Casey Ingraham struggled at
the serving line, with four serves,
three of those errors, for only 25
percent, but was 94 percent in
receiving with 16 receives and
only one receiving error. She also
made seven kills and six dinks.
Kim Pointer had 88 percent
serving with nine serves and one
error, as did Allison Sykes. Sykes
made seven service points and
Pointer, five.
Pointer also had eight kills, two
dinks and was 88 percent in
receiving, with a 15-2 record.
Five Mustangs had one
hundred percent serving- Kahl at
8-0 with five service points,
Ashley Ropp at 7-0 with three
service points and Katie Shemtt,
Stephanie Clough and Leah
Denton, each with 2-0 and one
service point apiece. Trisha
Adams was 85 percent at the
serving line at 7-1 and had four
service points. Amy Papineau
was 75 percent with 4-1 and had
two service points. Ropp made
three service points.
Adams and Sherritt both had
100 percent receiving, with 2-0
each.
Sykes was 83 percent receiving
at 5-1 and Clough and Papineau
were both 75 percent, with 6-2
and 3-1, respectively. Macy
Rhea had 66 percent receiving at
4-2.
Amy Drake made 10 blocks
for the Mustangs and six players
each made one-Ingraham, Ropp,
Adams, Papineau, Sherritt and
Denton.
Jubilee Christian defeats lone

The Jubilee Christian Warriors
defeated the lone Cardinals last
Friday by the score of 30-20.
lone intercepted a Warrior's
pass on their first series but the
Warriors did the same on lone's
first series, running the ball back
to lone's six yard line, where
lone's defense held the Warriors
on downs.
lone was able to score first on a
55 yard run by Dan Scott. Zak
Fabian ran for the two point
conversion.

Jubilee Christian answered
back with an 85 yard touchdown
run, but lone's defense stopped
the two point conversion. lone
led 8-6 at the end of the first
quarter.
The second quarter's only score
was lone's Korey Morgan scoring
six points on a one yard
quarterback sneak. At half time
the score was 14-6.
The third quarter was a disaster
for the Cardinals as the Warriors
scored three touchdowns on runs
of 52, 21, and two yards. The
score at the end of the third
quarter was 24-14.
In the fourth quarter the
Warriors scored again, this time
on an 18-yard pass. lone was
able to score one last time as
Koby Rea completed a 20-yard
pass to Dan Scott as the buzzer
sounded ending the game* • The
final score was 30-20.
Cardinal notes:
lone's Dan Scott rushed 19 times
for 202 yards, and Cory Bennetto
and Jacob Neiffer made several
big plays on defense.
lone is at Condon this Friday,
Oct. 22.
Hope, Valby change schedule
Valby Lutheran Church in
lone and Hope Lutheran Church,
Heppner, have a change in their
worship schedule this Sunday,
October 24.
Valby Lutheran Church will
hold worship service and Sunday
school at 11 a.m., followed by a
potluck
lunch
and
congregational meeting.
Hope Lutheran Church will
have worship service at 9 a.m.,
followed by Sunday school at 10
a.m.
lone VB team defeats Condon Blue Devils
The lone Cardinals hosted the
( ondon Blue Devils on Friday,
October 15. lone promptly
defeated the Blue Devils the first
game. 15-4, but the Condon
squad startled the Lady
C ardinals, beating them in the
second game. 9-15.
The
Cardinals pulled out all the stops
to deteat Condon in game three,
15-10.
Diana McElligott led the lone
team with 10 points, followed by
( hanssa Gates with nine points.
Gates also led the team in set
assists. Nikki McElligott was
dominating on the net with 20
spikes, 13 kills and eight dumps.

row and is credited for having a
kill at a very critical point in the
game which helped to shift the
momentum from Condon to
lone.
The Cardinal JV squad also
took three games before
downing the Blue Devils, 15-12,
12-15, 15-8.
Ashley Carmack belted over 20
points for the lone team. Allison
Halvorsen had an excellent
match and came away from the
game with nine spikes, three
kills, two dumps and five points.
Game three was proving to be
equally as tight as the first two
until Molly Barrow made an
incredible save on a bad pass,
getting the ball in the air for her
teammate to spike down the line,
switching the momentum of the
game in the Cardinal favor.
Nonnee Walters did an excellent
job in the back row, hustling to
short serves to center court for
lone.
