Mustang VB team 8th in state
The Heppner High School
Varsity Volleyball team is
ranked eighth in the state,
according to the Oregonian
newspaper October 11.
The Heppner team received 13
votes for the class 2A standings
St. Mary’s was first in the 2A
league with 54 points; Delphian,
second with 46; Amity third with
45; Regis fourth with 44; Gold
Beach, fifth with 31; Gervais,
sixth with 28; Dayton, seventh
with 21; Portland Christian,
ninth with 12; and Bonanza and
Oregon Episcopal tied for 10th,
with 10 votes each.
Oakland received eight votes,
Oakridge, three, Corbett, two,
Monrow, two and Imbler, one.
CBC standings as of October
12 show the Mustangs on top of
the East Division with three wins
and no losses. The Weston-
McEwen TigerScots were 2-1,
the Pilot Rock Rockets, 1-2, and
the Stanfield Tigers, 0-3. (The
Mustangs lost in three against
Weston McEwen on Tuesday,
October 12, m a home game for
Mustangs.)
On the West side, the Sherman
County Huskies were 2-0, the
Culver Bulldogs, 1-2, and the
Wahtonka Eagles, 0-1.
The Mustangs beat Condon in
a non-league game September 16
in two, 15-9, 15-11; lone in a
non-league game September 21
in two, 15-7, 15-13; lone in a
non-league game September 28
in three. 6-15, 16-14 and 15-5;
Pilot Rock in a league game in
two 15-10. 15-4; Stanfield in a
league match-up in two, 15-10,
15-4; and Wahtonka in three, 15-
7, 7-15 and 15-9.
Mustang varsity coach Tern
Gentry says that the team's high
serving percentage contributes a
great deal to their wins. The
team had a serving percentage of
851 as of Oct. 12.
Mustang Kim Pointer has a
.900 serving percentage average
in league games with 16 serving
points, five kills, five dinks and a
receiving percentage of .913. She
also had a team-high number of
attacks at 39.
Casey Ingraham has a .757
serving percentage in league
games, with 23 serving points,
11 kills, three dinks and a
receiving percentage of .862. She
had 19 attacks.
Abby Kahl has a .870 serving
percentage and 100 percent
receiving and 13 serving points.
Amy Papmeau has a .938 serving
percentage and a .846 in
receiving with 10 serving points.
Stephanie Clough is .842 in
serving and .680 in receiving,
with nine serving points. Katie
Shemtt has a .889 in serving and
100 percentage in receiving. She
also made seven serving points.
Allison Sykes had 75 percent
serving and 80 percent receiving
with seven serving points.
Trisha Adams had .667 in
serving and 75 percent in
receiving.
Others with 100 percent serving
are Ashley Rop, Amy Drake and
Macy Rhea. Rhea and Tracy
Rankin were 100 percent in
receiving.

and Clough. Pointer made seven
serving points. Kahl also had
.875 in serving. Sykes had .857
in serving and .800 in receiving.
Shenitt was .833 in serving.
In the October 7 game vs.
Stanfield four Mustangs had
perfect serving-Ropp, Shemtt,
Papmeau and Amy Drake.
Ingraham had 11 serving points.
Pointer was .875 in serving;
Kahl, .857; and Ingraham, .800.
Ingraham also had six kills.
Sykes, Pointer, Kahl, Adams,
Shemtt and Clough all had 100
percent in receiving. Ingraham
was .857 in receiving and
Papmeau, .833. Pointer had 17
attacks.
In the October 9 game against
Wahtonka, six players had 100
percent serving-Ropp, Pointer,
Papmeau, Sykes, Sherritt and
Rhea. Clough had 90 percent
serving, Kahl,
.875, and
Ingraham, .800 with eight
serving points.. Four had perfect
receiving-Kahl, Sherritt, Rhea
and Rankm. Pointer had .882 in
serves had 22 attacks. She made
two kills and five dinks.
Ingraham had .824 in receiving.
She had five kills and three
dinks.
The Mustangs’ next game is
Thursday, October 14, in Pilot
Rock with the C-team beginning
play at 5 p.m., followed by the
JV and the varsity games.
TigerScots drop Mustang JVs

The visiting Weston-McEwen
TigerScot JVs capitalized on the
Heppner Mustang JVs' mistakes
to win going away, 33 to 6.
The TigerScots led 12-0 at
halftime and increased their lead
to 25-0 before the Mustangs
could get on the board.
Using the strong running of
Brad Adams, the Mustangs
moved the ball to the four-yard
line where Travis Bellamy took it
in for the touchdown. TTie two-
point conversion run was stopped
short.
The Mustang JVs, now 3-1-1
on the year, travel to Pilot Rock
on Monday, Oct. 18 beginning at
6 p.m. for their final game of the
year.

The Heppner Ponies ran their
record to 4-0 by easily defeating
the Stanfield Junior High Tigers,
34-0.
Chuy Elguezabal got the Ponies
going with a 28 yard touchdown
run midway through the first quar
ter. Tyler Boyer caught the two-
point conversion pass from
Elguezabal to give the Ponies an
8-0 lead.
A 22 yard pass from Elgue
zabal to Luke Murray set up a
seven yard Elguezabal run for the
Ponies’ second touchdown. The
pass failed and the Ponies led 14-
0 early in the second quarter.
Kyler Lovgren recovered a
Stanfield fumble at midfield to give
the. ball back to the Ponies. On
fourth down, Elguezabal threw a
strike to Justin Botefuhr good for
a 50 yard touchdown. The kick
failed and the Ponies led 20-0.
On the Ponies’ next posses
sion, Botefuhr got behind the de
fense again and Elguezabal found
him again, this time good for a 71
yard touchdown. David Flynn’s
kick was good to give the Ponies
a 27-0 lead midway through the
second quarter.
Jode Coil intercepted a pass to
end a Stanfield drive just before
halftime.
On the Ponies’ first possession
of the third quarter, Lovgren broke
through the middle and rambled
54 yards for the touchdown.
Flynn’s kick was good and the
Ponies led 34-0 early in the sec
ond half.
The rest of the game was a
defensive struggle as both teams
would make good gains, only to
lose the ball or turn it over on
downs.
In the fourth quarter on two
separate possessions. Coil threw
a 20 yard pass to Adam Wight and
a 28 yard pass to Aaron Griffith.
Flynn also intercepted a pass to
end a Stanfield drive.
The Ponies’ last game of the
year will be against Columbia at
Heppner on Friday, Oct. 15, time
to be announced.
On Friday, Oct. 1, the Ponies
traveled to Pilot Rock and won,
34-0. Five different Ponies scored
touchdowns as Chuy Elguezabal,
Tanner Britt, Kyler Lovgren, Luke
Murray and Justin Botefuhr all
scored.

The fourth-ranked Heppner
Mustangs completely dominated
the visiting sixth-ranked Culver
Bulldogs in the first half en route
to a 33-6 homecoming win. The
Mustangs outgained the Bulldogs
265 yards total offense, 202 on
the ground to just 39 total yards
in the first half to* take a 27-0
lead that easily could have been
larger.
The win moves the Mustangs
record to 6 and 0, 3-0 in the
CBC. with a big game coming up
on Friday, Oct. 16, at Sherman
County beginning at 3:30 p.m.
The Mustangs took the opening
kick-off at their own 47-yard line
and effectively began moving the
ball as Craig Scott rushed for six,
eight and three and Ryan
Matteson kept the ball on the
option for 14 more to the 21 yard
line.
The drive stalled and
Culver took over on downs at
their own 12-yard line.
Jake Roy made a good hit on
the bulldog ballcarrier, causing a
fumble that Levi Geer recovered
at the 14.
After an offsides penalty
moved the ball to the nine,
Michael Schonbachler ran for
four to set up a five-yard Michael
McCabe touchdown run. Blake
Knowles kicked the extra point
and the Mustangs led 7-0
midway through the first quarter.
The Bulldogs took over at their
own 43 following the kick-off
and, on the first play, Scott
intercepted a pass at the
Mustangs' 43 yardline.
Scott ran for four, McCabe
broke loose for 11, Matteson ran
twice for nine yards and Scott
picked up nine yards and another
first down. McCabe picked up
two, Scott for six, then three
more and a first down at the 15.
Schonbachler went for five and
McCabe, seven, to set up a three
yard Matteson touchdown run.
Knowles' kick was perfect again
and Heppner led 14-0 with 2:28
left in the first quarter.
On the Bulldogs' next
possession it was McCabe’s turn
to intercept a pass to give the
Mustangs back the ball at their
own 47-yard line. Heppner was
unable to move the ball and had
to punt which gave the Bulldogs
the ball at their own 36.
