The Navy must sometimes rely
on allies to succeed in its
missions and a great deal of
cooperation is required before a
multinational force can achieve
a common goal. To achieve
common goals, the U.S. Navy
regularly trains with allied
navies and ground forces.
Recently, during joint
operations in Southeast Asia.
Rodger J. Amtt II took part in an
exercise that brought allied hast
and West nations together in the
spirit of cooperation.
The fifth annual event, known
as the Cooperation Afloat
Readiness and Training Exercise
(CARAT) 1999. drew military
participation from the United
States, Indonesia. Malaysia.
Thailand. Singapore and the
Philippines. Overall, the event
involved more than 1.500 Navy
and Marine Corps personnel m
mock-combat scenarios designed
to emulate real world events.
Navy Petty Officer 1st Class
Amtt, the 31-year-old son of
Rodger Amtt of Heppner, is a
hospital corpsman on board USS
Comstock (LSD 45). Amtt and
other Sailors played an integral
part in the success of CARAT
1999
The 15,745-ton Comstock,
which is home ported in San
Diego, is an amphibious assault
ship operated by 340 officers
and Sailors. Operating with an
amphibious
ready
group.
Comstock
is capable
of
transporting 450 Marines to
enemy foreign shores.
As a hospital corpsman aboard
Comstock, Amtt performs many
duties that help to make
Comstock a valuable naval asset.
He said, "I work primarily as a
supply petty officer for the
medical department."
While CARAT 1999 may be
over, it provided all involved
with practical experience for real
situations. And should a
situation arise in the future, our
Navy and allies will be ready to
stand and face the challenge as a
team.

Tara Eakin and Jason Proudfoot
The parents of Tara Lynn Eakin and Jason Garth Proudfoot announce
the engagement o f their children.
The bnde-elect is the daughter of Terry and Marilyn Eakin of Grass
Valley She is a graduate of Sherman Union High School and is
scheduled to graduate from Washington State University in December
1999 with degrees in criminal justice and sociology.
The bride-groom elect is the son of Paul and Sue Proudfoot of lone.
He is a graduate of lone High School and a 1998 graduate of
University of Idaho in agricultural systems management. He is
employed by Proudfoot Ranches.
The couple will be married January 1,2000 at Calvary Baptist Church
in The Dalles. Oregon. A reception will follow.

Seventy-four seniors and seven under 60 were present for the senior
meal Aug. 25 and 12 meals were taken out. Members of the Christian
Missionary Fellowship served. Marian Brosnan celebrated her 85th
birthday that day.
The menu for Sept. 8 will be hot chicken salad with rice, dilly
cucumber salad, cranberry salad, croissant rolls and cherry chocolate
salad. Members of the Seventh-day Adventist and Nazarene churches
will serve. The Senior Board will meet following the meal.
The bus trip to the Umatilla Meal Site August 27 was canceled as not
enough people signed up.
Pinochle was played Tuesday and Friday afternoon. Exercises are
Tuesday and Thursday at 10 a.m.. The movie, "Westside Story," was
shown Sunday evening. Movies are being shown every Sunday evening
at 7 again. Everyone is welcome to join in any of these activities.

Struthers
celebrate 40th
anniversary
Maynard and Edna Struthers
celebrated their 40th wedding
anniversary on Saturday, August
28.
The couple were surrounded
by Edna's family at the
Boardm?n marina for their
yearly Morris-Wilson family
reunion. The Strutherses' sons,
Jack and Bill, and daughter,
Dena, and their families were
also with them for the tribute to
their long marriage.
The Strutherses lived more than
half of their 40 married years in
Heppner but now reside in
Hermiston.
