Families were the thing at the
Morrow County Rodeo held
Sunday, August 22, in Heppner
as various family pairings took
home awards.
Siblings, Madison and Lane
Bailey, were the co-winners of
the all-around. They received a
buckle donated by Les Schwab.
A father-son duo took first and
second in the amateur calf roping
event. Butch Knowles of
Heppner won first place and a
saddle made by Billy McCom of
Severe Bros. Saddlery, donated
by Frontier Resources. His son,
Brian Knowles, was second and
John Steagall finished third.
I he team of Steve Currin and
Brett McDowell took first in
team roping and earned buckles
by Pettyjohn's Farm Builders and
Heritage Land Company. Second
were Cliff Dougherty and Cindy
Leasy and third were another
father-son duo, Ken and Lane
Bailey.
Maureen Crossley was first in
the break-away calf roping for a
breast collar by Green Feed &
Seed, made by Mike Proctor.
Lexi Mattteson was second in
that event, Cindy Leasy, third,
and Angela Munkers, fourth.
Winner of the open calf roping,
a buckle donated by Van Marter
and Kahl Insurance and the Neil
Beamer Memorial Spurs, donated
by the Beamer Family, was Jack
McGuire. Tony Currin, Steve's
brother, was second and Bill
Bishop, third.
Tony's wife, Kelli Currin, was
first in the senior barrels for a
watch by Peterson's Jewelers.
Mary Ann Munkers, Angela’s
mother was second. Sue Gibbs,
third, and Angie Hughes, fourth.
Lacey Matteson, Lexi's sister,
was first in the junior barrels.
She won a buckle donated by the
Healy Family-daughter Joan
Hays, granddaughters. Mary
Hays and Heather Lunny, and
great-grandsons, Kyler and Drew
Shad Lunny- in memory of their
father and grandfather, William
J. Healy. Angela Munkers was
second and Tracy Griffith, third.
Jennifer Griffith was the
winner of the Pee Wee Barrels
and a buckle donated by the
Wrangler's Riding Club. Lane
Bailey was second and Emily
Rietmann, third.
Keith Papineau won the steer
wrestling event and a buckle
donated by the Turner Ranch.
Justin Matteson, Lexi and
Lacey's brother, was second and
Blake Knowles, Butch's son and
Brian's brother, third.
Jared Eckman took first place in
cow riding.
Tiffany Munkers, sister to
Angela and Mary Ann's daughter,
was first in the senior goat tying
and won a buckle donated by Gar
Aviation and John and Kelly
Boyer. Lexi Matteson was
second. Maureen Crossley, third,
and Angela Munkers. fourth.
Madison Bailey took first in the
junior goat tying for a buckle by
Dick Temple, DVM. Becky
Schiller was second and Jennifer
Griffith, third.
Cody Ford was first place in
the Shad Hisler Memorial Calf
Riding event. He won a buckle
donated by the Paul Hisler. Jr.
Family. Madison Bailey finished
second, Justin Gregory, third, and
Lane Bailey, fourth.
Taighler Doherty won a buckle
donated by Court Street Market
for her first place finish in the
mutton bustin' event. Second was
Kaley O'Brien. Third was Willy
Gentry and fourth was Devin
Robinson.
Winner of the three-and-under
stick horse race was Payden
Daly. Second was Blake Greenup
and third, Betsy West.
Winner of the four and five-
year-old stick horse race was
Zane Davis. Second was Mary
Rietmann and third was Skylar
Leasy.
Bryan Holland took first in the
six and seven-year-old stick
horse race. Kristen Van Cleave,
second, and Brooke Davis, third.
The stick horse race was
sponsored by the HM Ranch.

Angela Munkers, Lexington, is
the first woman to ever rope and
get a time in the amateur calf
roping event in the Morrow
County Rodeo, according to
rodeo officials.

Local response ‘tremendous’
Donnie, suffered a head injury,
four broken ribs, a punctured
lunch and broken cheekbones in
the accident.
After the accident. Papineau
was transported to Grande Ronde
Hospital and then flown to St.
Alphonsus Hospital in Boise in
critical condition. She has not yet
regained consciousness and may
be moved to a nursing home.
An account is still open at the
Bank of Eastern Oregon to accept
donations.

The local response to the fund
raising effort to benefit Gail
Papineau and her family has been
"tremendous.” according to Jan
Coe. Heppner, one of the
organizers.
Funds were raised at the
Morrow County Fair and Oregon
Trail Rodeo to help with the
medical expenses for Papineau,
who was critically injured in a
barrel racing accident on July 23
at LaGrande’s Maverick Arena.
Papineau, Enterprise, who
formerly lived in south Morrow
County with her husband.

Buck deer poached in Morrow County
Oregon State Trooper Dave
Rzewnicki is seeking the culprit
in a poaching incident that
occurred on Upper Little Butter
Creek in Morrow County.
