Fund raiser to benefit injured barrel racer
Local fund raising efforts are
underway to benefit former area
resident, Gail Papineau, who was
seriously injured in a barrel
racing accident on July 23 at
LaGrande's Maverick Arena.
Papineau, now of Enterprise,
was critically injured when her
horse stumbled and fell during a
run-out at the arena. According
to a newspaper report, her
brother, Glenn Chitty said she
suffered a head injury, four
broken ribs, a punctured lung and
broken cheekbones.
Papineau was stabilized at the
scene, transported by ambulance
to Grande Ronde Hospital and
then flown to St. Alphonsus
Hospital in Boise, Idaho, where
she was admitted in critical
condition. The prognosis was
initially good, according to the
newspaper report, but she has not
yet regained consciousness. She
is now in the rehabilitation
program at St. Alphonsus and
may be moved to a nursing
home, according to local sources.
Papineau, who was bom in
Maine, moved with her family to
Wallowa County in 1959 and
graduated from Enterprise High
School. She and her husband,
Donnie, lived in south Morrow
County before returning to the
Enterprise area and Papineau was
employed for a time with the
Gazette-Times newspaper. She
has been an avid horsewoman
and barrel racer since she was
young.
Local residents, Jean Jepsen,
Linda Bristoll and Jan Coe. are
spearheading a local fund raising
effort and donation cans will be
set out during fair week at the 4-
H snack shack at the fairgrounds.
Cans will also be distributed for
collection at the Morrow County
Rodeo just prior to the stick
horse race. Volunteers are being
sought to help with the
distribution of the cans. An
account has also been established
at the Bank of Eastern Oregon to
help with the expense of her care.
For more information, call
Jepsen, 422-7180.
