4-H herdsmanship has new format Superintendents make fair run smoothly
This year for the first time in
many years herdsmanship will
not be a contest. It will be
handled as total cooperation
between beef, sheep, swine and
small animal participants.
"It should be stressed that this
does
not
mean
that
herdsmanship is not important,"
said Bill Broderick, Morrow
County Extension agent. "It is
one of the critical parts of the
livestock program that must
happen at fair. By handling
herdsmanship with cooperation
instead of a contest, 4-H
members, leaders, and parents
should be able to enjoy working
together and make the whole
animal exhibit area a success.”
With the contest there was one
"winner," said Broderick. This
year,
everyone
will
be
"winners," he said, because an
ice cream social has been
planned Saturday afternoon
(time to be announced at fair)
for everyone. "The ultimate
"winner" should be the "public"
as it is hoped we all will do a
better job of herdsmanship,"
Brodenck said.
A fair could not run without
the
volunteer
help
of
superintendents. They set up the
display area before the fair, take
exhibits, help the judge, place
ribbons on entries and enter
everything in the books so
exhibitors will get their premium
money.
All this gets very confusing at
times, but they try their best to
greet everyone with a smile and
to answer questions.
This year you will see familiar
and new faces working as
superintendents. The fair board
appreciates their effort: "We
couldn't do it without them,"
says LaRae Kindle, fair
secretary.

for future fair entertainment.)
