Mustangs score late to beat Vikings

The Heppner Mustangs scored
10 runs in the last three innings to
beat the Umatilla Vikings, 13-4, on
Tuesday, May 4 in Umatilla. The
non-league win improved the
Mustangs’ overall record to 9-9.
The Vikings took a 2-0 lead in
the first, but Heppner got within
one in the second as Zac Fabian
scored on a Derek Gunderson
fielder’s choice.
Umatilla took a 3-1 lead into the
fourth inning, but Bias Elguezabal
got the Mustangs’ offense going
by hitting a two-run home run to
tie the score.
In the fifth, Tim Dickenson got
on by error, Cory Bennetto
walked and Allan Gnbskov singled
to load the bases. Fabian rounded
out to score Dickenson and give
the Mustangs the lead and start
ing pitcher David Bates hit a two
RBI single to give the Mustangs
a 6-3 lead.
The Mustangs kept it up in the
sixth as Elguezabal walked and
moved to second on Gunderson’s
single. Shane M atheny then
singled to score Elguezabal and
Dickenson singled to score
Gunderson. Gnbskov tacked on
another run on a sacrifice fly to
score Matheny.
The Vikings pulled to within 9-
4 in the sixth, but the Mustangs
put the game away with four
more in the seventh.
Stefan Matheny reached first
on a fielder’s choice and moved
to third on Gunderson’s double.
Shane Matheny then scored both
with a single. Dickenson was hit
by a pitch and Bennetto scored
two with a double.
Bates picked up the win on the
mound, with relief from Elgue
zabal, to move to 4-0 on the year.
Elguezabal went 4-4 with a
home run, a double and two RBIs.
Shane Matheny had two RBIs
also.

The Pioneer Memorial Nursing
Home Auxiliary has scheduled
their annual yard sale for June
12 and are now accepting
donations.
Donated articles may be left at
the home of Tanya Jones.
Anyone who needs to have items
picked up may call either Tanya
Jones or Toma Adams.
The money made at the yard
sale will be used to purchase
items that are needed in the
nursing home or to make
improvements at the nursing
home.

supportive of this event in the
past and their support is
appreciated by the auxiliary
members and by the residents of
the nursing home," said an

lone girls, boys fall short against Vikings

lone tennis teams traveled to
Umatilla on Saturday to take on
the Vikings in a battle of the
racquets. The lone girls came
up short against the Lady
Vikings, losing 2-5. The lone
men walked away with one win,
allowing the Vikings to grab
four victories.
In singles' play, Jeremy
Rietmann lost to Adrian
Palomino in a tough fought
match, 7-9. Rietmann aced his
opponent in games two and five
with his massive serves.
Rietmann also hustled on the
court well.
Jeremiah McElligott was
responsible for the lone victory,
defeating Jack Hess, 8-6.
McElligott served up two aces
consecutively in game two and
dished up some superior lobs
into the back court.
Jessica Krebs lost to Zenya
Leyva, 0-8, but had many well-
executed chip shots over the net
and scooped up some extremely
hard slams by Leyva before the
match was over, said coach
Cathy McCabe.
Molly Barrow lost to Rachel
Swanson, 6-8. Barrow handed
Swanson a tough match. Barrow

Sullivan's net coverage kept
them above Umatilla throughout
the match.
Shelby Krebs and Allison
Halvorsen fought a tough match
against Trista White and Carlyn
White, losing a close battle, 7-9.
Shelby placed her hits wisely
and Halvorsen displayed hustled
in the back court.
Rosanne Baker and Katie
Tworek brought in a victory
over Marcie Garza and Chelsea
Kik, defeating Umatilla, 8-5.

Neiffer came out short against

John Routson and Brian Morris,
1-8.
Colin had noteworthy
serving and Jeremiah covered
the court well throughout the
match.

Campbell lost to Chanse Page
and Paul Valle, 4-8. Crum and
Campbell had a huge deficit
before stepping up their game to
close in the gap.
Mustang JVs suffer first loss
of season, split with Riverside

The Heppner M ustang JV
baseball team suffered their first
loss of the season in the second
game o f a doubleheader at
Boardman against the Riverside
Pirates on Monday, May 10.
The Mustangs held on to win
the first game, 8-5, but dropped
the nightcap, 9-5, to make their
record 7-1 for the year. The JVs’
last games will be a doubleheader
against the Hermiston JVs on
Thursday, May 13, in Heppner
beginning at 3:30 p.m.
The Mustangs jum ped out
quickly in the first game, getting a
three-run home run from Cory
Bennetto in the top of the first in
ning. Zac Fabian singled and
Travis Bellamy walked ahead of
Bennetto’s blast.
In the third, Fabian singled and
Bellamy hit a home run to left.
Bennetto and Kelly Paullus both
walked. Josh Hill got to first on an
error to score one and Cody
Bellamy was hit by a pitch to load
the bases. Nick Anthony then had
an infield hit to score Paullus and
Stefan Matheny hit a sacrifice fly
to score Hill.
That gave the Mustangs an 8-
1 lead. The Pirates scored a run
in the fourth and three more in the
fifth, but Bennetto, pitching in re
lief of Travis Bellamy, shut the
Pirates down in the sixth and sev
enth innings.
In the second game, Matheny
led off by getting hit by a pitch
and scored on Fabian’s double.
The Pirates came back to build
a 4-1 lead going into the top of the
fifth before the Mustangs tried to
rally. Fabian got to second on a
dropped fly ball and Travis
reached on an error and stole sec
ond. Hill then ripped a two-out
single to score both and cut the
lead to one.
The Pirates came back with
five runs in the bottom of the fifth
to take a 9-3 lead to the seventh.
Allan Gribskov was hit by a
pitch, moved to second and scored
on Hill’s single. Matheny then got
an infield hit with the bases loaded
to score Hill, but that was all the
Mustangs could get.
Patrick Davidson went 4-4
with two doubles and Hill had two
hits and three RBIs.
