Dylan Pettyjohn pitched a no
hitter in the second game of a
doubleheader against the visiting
Condon/Wheeler Blue Devils on
Saturday, May 1, to give the Hepp
ner Mustangs the sweep.
Pettyjohn pitched the seventh
inning of game one as the Mus
tangs rallied to win, 15-14, and
pitched a complete game 11-0 to
win in a five-inning nightcap.
The Mustangs spotted the Blue
Devils a 10-0 lead in an error-filled
first game before they got going
in the second inning. Tim
Dickenson and starting pitcher
David Bates both walked and
Cody Bellamy got on on an error
to lead the bases. Zac Fabian
singled to score Dickenson, Derek
Gunderson hit a deep fly to cen
ter to sacrifice Bates home and
Shane Matheny scored Bellamy
on a fielder’s choice.
The Mustangs then fell behind
12-3 before getting their offense
going again in the fourth. Bias
Elguezabal and Bellamy both
singled and Fabian tripled to score
both. Gunderson then hit his fourth
home run of the year to deep left-
center to cut the Condon lead to
12-7. Matheny and Cory Bennetto
both walked and moved to sec
ond and third on Allan Gribskov’s
groundout. Dickenson then hit a
clutch two-out single to cut the
lead to 12-9.
Condon scored a run in the
sixth, but the Mustangs came back
with three o f their own as
Bennetto singled and scored on
Gribskov’s double. Dickenson
reached on an error and Gribskov
scored on a wild pitch that moved
Dickenson to third. Elguezabal
then had an RBI single to cut the
lead to 13-12.
The Blue Devils scored another
run in the top of the seventh, but
Heppner wasn’t done, as Gun
derson led off with a walk, stole
second and scored on Matheny’s
double. Michael McCabe doubled
to tie the game and went to third
on the throw. Gribskov then
singled home McCabe with the
game winner.
Gunderson led the way with
two hits, including the home run
. and three RBIs. Fabian was 2-3
with 3 RBIs. Gribskov went 2-5
with a double and two RBIs.
Elguezabal went 2-3.
Game two was a different sce
nario as it was the Mustangsjump-
ing out to the early lead.
Gunderson, Matheny and Mc
Cabe all walked to load the bases
for Bennetto, who singled to score
two. Dickenson then squeezed
McCabe home with a bunt and
Bellamy singled to score Bennetto
to give the Mustangs a 4-0 lead
after one.
They w eren’t done there
though as Gunderson again led off
with a walk and was moved to
third on M atheny’s single.
McCabe walked to load the bases
and Bennetto hit a sacrifice fly to
score Gunderson. G ribskov
singled to right to score Matheny
and Dickenson hit a sacrifice fly
to score McCabe.
In the third, Elguezabal got a
bad hop single and moved to third
on Gunderson’s double. Matheny
hit a sacrifice fly to score
Elguezabal and McCabe walked
again. Bennetto singled to score
Gunderson and Dickenson got a
two-out single to score McCabe
and Bennetto.
In the meantime, Pettyjohn was
mowing down the Blue Devils, and
finished with 11 strikeouts, includ
ing striking out the side in the third,
fourth and fifth innings.
Bennetto was 2-2 with four
RBIs, and Dickenson ended up 1-
1 with four RBIs. Matheny was
1-1 with 2 runs scored and an RBI.
Gunderson had a double and
scored three runs. McCabe
walked three times and scored all
three times.
The win improves the Mus
tangs’ Columbia Basin Confer
ence East Division record to 4-2
and their overall record to 8-9.
The Mustangs next play a double-
header at Stanfield on Saturday,
May 8, at 11 a.m.

Jessica Krebs succumbed to
Amanda Lewis in a tough fought
match, losing 5-8. Jessica played
well but just couldn't get the
upper hand on Lewis. Jennifer
Thompson conceded to Jessi
Holben, 2-8. Molly Barrow
handed Jennifer Madison a loss,
defeating Madison 8-1. Barrow
donned a ferocious forehand and
her serves were skillful, said
coach Cathy McCabe. The
doubles team of Shelby Krebs
and Allison Halvorsen lost a
heartbreaker match to Jenny
Lewis and Wendy Holben in a
tie breaker, 8-9. Krebs played
the net "excellently," said
McCabe.. Amellia Peck and
Niki Sullivan defeated Jennifer
Madison and Kristina Klag, 8-3.
Katie Tworek and Rosanne
Baker easily defeated Kim
Holben and Allison Allstott, 8-2.
Camp Fire camp registration
Oregon Trail Council of Camp
Fire's Camp Program is
currently taking registrations for
its day camp and resident camp.
Camp DaKonYa is located 18
miles east of Pendleton in the
Blue Mountains.
Camp Dates are; day camp -
June 14-17; cost-$95 for Camp
Fire members, $110 for non-
members.
Resident Camp - June 20-26;
Cost-$185 for Camp Fire
members, $200 for non

nature, ecology, singing, games,
and crossing the monkey bridge

The lone tennis team hosted
Echo on Friday, April 30. Echo
went home with a win defeating
the lone boys, 4-1, but the lone
girls tied with Echo,, 3-3.
In boys' action, Nate James
defeated Jeremy Rietmann, 8-4.
Rietmann played his best match
of the season. Steve Crum fell to
Aaron Brown, 3-8. Derek
Campbell fell to Chris Marcum
in a tight match, 6-8. Adam
McCabe and Adam Neiffer lost
to Nate James and Nick
Marcum, 6-8. "McCabe and

baseball team remained unbeaten
as they swept the visiting River
side Pirates JVs 9-1 and 7-6 on
April 29.
Allan Gribskov pitched a one-
hitter in the first game, allowing
just a first inning run. The Mus
tangs tied it in the bottom of the
second as Josh Hill doubled and
was scored by Nick Anthony’s
single.
The Mustangs took the lead for
good in the fourth as Zac Fabian
doubled home Gribskov and Cody
Bellamy, who had both walked.
The Mustangs tacked on three
more in the fifth as Gribskov
doubled home Kelly Paullus and
Hill, who had both walked, and
later scored as Anthony reached
on an error.
In the sixth, Mark McElligott
singled, Travis Bellamy walked
and Paullus singled to load the
bases. Hill hit into a fielder’s
choice to score M cElligott,
Gribskov hit a sacrifice fly to score
Bellamy and Anthony singled to
score Paullus for the Mustangs’
final runs.
Anthony ended up going 2-3,
with three RBIs; Gribskov went
1 -2, with a double and three RBIs;
and McElligott went 2-4.
Heppner jumped out early in
game two, as Cory Bennetto
belted a three-run home run, driv
ing in McElligott who had singled
and Michael McCabe who had
reached on a fielder’s choice.
The Mustangs tacked on two
more in the second as McElligott
doubled to score Anthony who
had walked, and Travis Bellamy
hit a sacrifice fly to score Fabian
who had singled.
The Pirates scored two runs in
the top half of the third, but the
Mustangs came back with a run
in their half as Paullus singled,
Cody Bellamy doubled, and
Fabian hit a sacrifice fly to score
Paullus.
The Pirates came back to get
within 6-5, but Heppner scored
another run in the sixth. Travis
Bellamy reached on an error, stole
second and scored on a Bennetto
single.
Riverside scored another run in
the seventh but it wasn’t enough
as Matheny picked up the save in
relief of McCabe.
Kim Pointer
Heppner High School junior
Kim Pointer has been selected as
a member of the 1999 Goodwill
Ambassadors
European
volleyball tour. The tour will
take Kim and her teammates
from across the U.S. to London,
Paris, Geneva, Venice, and
Rome.

states, "The tour is sponsored by
the Sports for Youth Foundation
(a non-profit corporation) and
Northwest Volleyball; leaders
nationwide
for
volleyball
oriented activities since 1974.
Over the past 17 years the
foundation
and Northwest
Volleyball have hosted many
tours to Western Europe and
Russia. In those 17 years it has
'been our pleasure to coach and
tour with young athletes such as
Kim, who do an excellent job of
representing themselves and
their community to the world
through the sport of volleyball."
While on tour Kim and the
other

Goodwill
Ambassadors will be hosted by
volleyball clubs in each city.
"The tour is not limited to
playing volleyball. It is an
educational and cultural tour as
well. In each city there are
planned visits to museums (The
Louvre in Paris); landmarks such
as the Palace of Versailles, the
Eiffel Tower, the Vatican, San
Marcos Square, and the Sistine
Chapel; cathedrals such as
Westminster Abby and Notre
Dame and many other historic
sights."
Kim will leave Seattle July 5
for London where she will
participate in the World Youth
Games on July 10-11. From
there she will travel to the

Rock to Portland for a weekend

Bowen. They were joined by

urday. They were visitors of
Howard De Lano’s home in Ore
gon City to see the Lipizzan horses.
Due to the war in the Middle
East, the U.S. is now raising these
beautiful animals for export. As
the horses were considered the
property of Middle East royal fami
lies, many were put to death by
those destroying all property of the
families. An interesting note is
that the horses are bom black, but
change to white when about four
years old.
TigerScots upset Mustangs

The Weston-McEwen Tiger-
Scots scored a run on a wild pitch
in the bottom of the seventh in
ning to upset the Heppner Mus
tangs, 5-4, on Tuesday, April 27,
in Athena.
The Mustangs scored two runs
in the first inning as Derek
Gunderson led off, reaching first
on an error and later scoring on
Shane M atheny’s double.
Matheny went to third on a wild
pitch and scored on Michael
McCabe’s sacrifice fly.
The Mustangs took a 3-1 lead
in the third as Gunderson singled,
stole second and third and scored
on an error by the catcher.
The TigerScots came back to
tie the game in the bottom of the
third and took a 4-3 lead in the
fifth.
Matheny hit a long home run
to tie the game up in the top of the
seventh, but the TigerScots came
back to get the win.
M atheny went 2-3 with a
double, a home run and two RBIs.
Gunderson went 2-4 with three
stolen bases and two runs scored.
Bias Elguezabal went 1-3.
