The Governor's Conference on
Tourism truly gives great
lessons in making visitors feel
welcome.
Aside from the
fantastic food offerings. . .
seafood to die for and great
entertainment, there were some
excellent speakers and the
opportunity to visit with people
promoting our entire state.
"People go where they are
invited and return to where they
feel welcome" is the key to
visitor success.
The best
packaging in the world is only
complete if people have come
and had a good time or decided
to stay. The secret is to have
someone on the end of every call
or behind every counter knowing
the facts and having all
information at their fingertips.
Inquirers receiving a confused
response to their questions often
move on to where people
respond receptively and with
enthusiasm.
Packaging and
ownership in our community is
so very important.
One interesting speaker, Phil
Goodman, has done extensive
research
on
generational
marketing.
The generations
were broken into seniors (64+);
the forgotten generation (54-63);
the boomer generation (older 43-
53 and younger 35-42);
generation x (23-34) and the
echo boomers (6 - 22). He
claimed
the
retirement
community is going to be in
deep trouble as the boomers
don't plan on getting old. He
claims that typically baby
boomers are adult teenagers who
were raised to be independent;
don't follow adult trends; often
make
spur-of-the
moment
decisions; listen to their
children's music; don't believe in
the system; are always on the
lookout for family type
activities; have a hurried
lifestyle and don't have much
spare time.
To push their
buttons, you have to have
activities to please their children.
Is this true boomers? Food for
thought as we plan for Heppner's
future.
The website session was very
worthwhile with some great
opportunities for Chamber and
links to the Heppner site, yet
another marketing tool. And
more next week on having a
balanced whole life.
Incidentally, the Oregon Coast
has its share of problems too.
The mighty Pacific has taken its
toll on visitor parking, beach
access and smooth sand. New
cliffs have been created, acres of
logs rolled up on the beach,
rocks of all sizes and shapes, and
steps from motels stripped away.
What storms those must have
been.
The sunset was
magnificent, though, and the
conference was great.
Next week: John Fletcher will
demonstrate video-conferencing
and
Representative
Lynn
Lundquist will be on the speaker
phone. Come to Chamber with
questions.
Thought for the week: "The
reputation of a thousand years
may be determined by the
conduct of one hour. . . "
