Huskies sweep Mustangs
By Rick Paullus
The Heppner Mustangs trav
eled to Moro on Saturday, April 3
and dropped a doubleheader to the
third-ranked Sherman County
Huskies, 17-5 and 9-8, on a cold,
windy day.
The Mustangs held a 1-0 lead
in the top of the first as Derek
Gunderson got to second base on
an error, moved to third on Allan
Gribskov’s single and scored on
another Husky error.
The Huskies built an 8-1 lead
after two using good hitting and
Heppner errors.
In the top of the third, the Mus
tangs battled back as Gunderson
beat out an infield hit and went to
second on an error. After moving
to third on a passed ball,
Gunderson scored on Shane
Matheny’s single off the third
baseman.
Matheny moved to second on
a passed ball; Gribskov reached
first on an error and Matheny
went to third. A wild pitch scored
Matheny and moved Gribskov to
second. Cory Bennetto then
walked and both runners moved
up on a wild pitch. Cody Bellamy
then hit a two-out double to score
both runners and close the gap to
8-5.
The Huskies came back with
three runs in the bottom of the in
ning and six more in the bottom of
the fourth to put the game away.
Sherman County continued
their scoring into the second game,
building a 3-0 lead after one in
ning before the Mustangs got go
ing.
Bennetto led off the second in
ning with a double and moved up
to third on a passed ball. Michael
McCabe then singled to score
Bennetto and moved to second on
a passed ball. Mark McElligott
then singled up the first baseline
to score McCabe and narrow the
lead to 3-2.
The Huskies came right back
to score two runs in the bottom of
the second to build their lead back
to 5-2.
With two outs in the top of the
third, Gribskov walked and scored
on Bennetto’s double to right-cen-

In the bottom of the third,

Josh Hill reached on an error
in the top of the fourth and Cody
Bellamy came in to pinch run.

choice and moved to second on
another fielder’s choice. Stefan
Matheny then reached base on an
error to score McElligott as the
Mustangs tied the game up at 5-
5.
The Huskies came back with
a run in the bottom of the fourth
and two more in the fifth for an 8-
5 lead.
The Mustangs were looking to
rally in the top of the sixth, as
Travis Bellamy led off with a
pinch hit single and Shane
Matheny reached base on an in
field hit. But a double play ended
the rally and the Huskies tacked
on another run in the bottom of
the inning for a 9-5 lead.
The Mustangs weren’t done
though, as Gunderson beat out an
infield hit, stole second and came
home on a Stefan Matheny single.
Matheny ended up at second on
the throw home and went to third
as Gribskov reached first on an
error. Gribskov then stole second
and Bennetto hit a ground rule
double to score both runners and
close the gap to 9-8.
Bennetto moved to third on a
fielder’s choice, but the game
ended as Kelly Paullus filed out
to deep centerfield.
Bennetto had three doubles and
three RBIs to lead the Mustangs
at the plate.
The Mustangs’ next game is a
non-league doubleheader at Dufur
on Friday, Apnl 9, beginning at 3
p.m.
Allan Gribskov came through
with a clutch two-out base hit to
score Shane Matheny from third
base as the Heppner Mustangs
won their second straight game in
the bottom of the seventh, 8-7,
over the visiting Umatilla Vikings
on Tuesday, March 29.
The Mustangs took an early 3-
0 lead in the first on a Tim
Dickenson double, a Gribskov
RBI single and a two-run home
run by Cory Bennetto.
The Vikings narrowed the gap
to 3-2 in the top of the third, but
the Mustangs came right back
with a Shane Matheny two-run
home run.
The Vikings scored two more
in the top o f the fourth, but
Michael McCabe hit his second
home run of the year, a solo shot
to centerfield, to make it 6-4 in
favor of the Mustangs.
The Vikings scored three runs
in the top of the fifth to take a 7-6
lead and held it until the bottom of
the seventh. Derek Gunderson
walked with one out and Matheny
laid down a sacrifice bunt. The
throw got past the first baseman
and Gunderson came all the way
around to score the tying run with
Matheny ending up on third.
Gribskov then came through with
the hit to improve the Mustangs’
record to 2-3.
Gribskov ended up going 2-4
with two RBIs.
Dylan Pettyjohn, pitching in re
lief of David Bates, picked up the
win.
The second game of the sched
uled doubleheader was called af
ter three innings because of dark
ness, with the Mustangs leading
4-3.
Umatilla jumped out to a 3-0
lead after one before the Mus
tangs rallied in the bottom of the
second to score four runs.
Stefan Matheny led off with a
single and went to second on a
passed ball. Kelly Paullus hit a
pinch-hit single to drive in Matheny
while he went to second. When
the ball got by the centerfielder,
