The Lady Cardinal JV team
sparred against the Echo
Cougars on Friday, Feb. 12, and
came out ahead of Echo, 7-5, at
the end of two quarters.
Jennifer Thompson and Salli
McElligott each hit a bucket in
the first quarter, while Nonnee
Walters launched a three-point
shot in the second quarter, lifting
lone over Echo by two.
Salli McElligott wowed
everyone, stealing the ball from
the Cougars seven times and
checking one Echo shot. Jennifer
Thompson led the lone team in
rebounds.
Coach Duane Neiffer was
pleased with the JV season,
commenting, "We had some
really young talent on the team
this year but they all continued
to improve every time they
stepped out on the court. They
wrapped up their season on a
winning note."
The JV squad consisted of
junior Miranda McElligott,
sophomores, Jeanette Brantley,
Jennifer Thompson and Nonnee
Walters and five freshmen,
Rhonda Wilhelm, Kristina
Powell, Kristin Davidson, Salli
McElligott and Cyndi Heagy.
M ustang boys nipped by Culver Bulldogs

The Culver Bulldogs ended the
Heppner Mustangs boys’ season
with a 43-38 win at the Columbia
Basin Conference District Tour
nament at Pendleton on Thursday,
Feb. 25. The Mustangs played the
Bulldogs tough for the second time
in two weeks, but couldn’t quite
get over the hump.
The Mustangs jumped out to a
4-0 lead on two free throws and a
lay-in by Shane Matheny and a 6-
2 lead after a basket by Tim
Dickenson. The Bulldogs came
back to lead 7-6 at the end of one,
however.
A lay-in by Jared Eckman and
another lay-in on a nice pass from
Casey Evans to Craig Scott
boosted the Mustangs lead to 10-
7 early in the second quarter. Af
ter the Bulldogs regamed the lead,
Derek Gunderson hit a jump shot
to make it 12-11. The Bulldogs
took the lead again, but Scott hit
two free throws to make it 14-13.
Eckman hit a jumper and Ryan
Matteson hit a three-pointer to
make it 19-15 only to have the
Bulldogs come back to tie it at 19-
19 at halftime.
Matheny hit a jump shot to open
the third quarter only to have the
Bulldogs tie it up at 21 -21. Eckman
scored on a nice pass from
Matheny, then made one of two
free throws to give the Mustangs
a 24-21 lead. After a Bulldog bas
ket, Matteson hit another three-
pointer to make it 27-23. After a
Bulldog three-pointer, Matteson
hit a jumper on a nice pass from
Matheny to make it 29-26 in fa
vor of the Mustangs. The Bulldogs
then scored the last five points of
the quarter to take a 31-29 lead
going into the fourth.
A Matheny jump shot closed it
to 33-31, but the Bulldogs scored
six straight to take a 39-31 lead.
Matheny hit another jump shot,
Dickenson hit a free throw and
Matteson hit another three-pointer
to close to within 39-37 with 1:50
remaining.
Dickenson hit one of two free
throws with: 13 seconds left to get
within 39-38. The M ustangs
quickly fouled, but the Bulldogs hit
both free throws to make it 41-38
with: 12.1 left. The Mustangs then
were unable to get off a shot and
the Bulldogs hit two more free
throws with 1.9 seconds left for
the final margin.
Matteson ended up with three
three-pointers to lead the Mus
tangs with 11 points. Matheny
ended up with 10 points and had
two assists. Eckman finished with
seven points and two blocked
shots. Dickenson led the Mus
tangs with 10 rebounds. Evans had
two assists and three rebounds
before fouling out early in the
fourth quarter.
The game marked the end of a
long run for the five seniors, who
started playing together in the sev

The Heppner Mustang girls’
basketball team finished in second
place at the District 7-2A Colum
bia Basin Conference tournament
after losing to the Sherman
County Huskies, 44-35 on Friday,
Feb. 26. The Mustangs played in
the state tournament in Pendleton
on Tuesday, March 2.
After falling behind early, the
Mustangs’ Jill Barber hit two free
throws and Casey Ingraham
scored at the end of the first quar
ter to trail by one at 9-8.
Jaci Hughes hit two free
throws to tie the score at 10-10
and Kathleen Greenup hit a bas
ket and free throw to give Hepp
ner a 13-12 lead. Hughes then
made a lay-in to make it 15-12
before the Huskies came right
back to take an 18-15 lead. Jes
sica Maben helped the Mustangs
come back to trail byjust one 20-
19 at halftime.
The Mustangs came out hot at
the start of the third quarter to take
a 26-20 lead, but Sherman County
came back with a 14-2 run to take
a 34-28 lead going into the fourth
quarter.
Ingraham helped the Mustangs
get within 36-32 midway through
the fourth quarter, but the Hus
kies made enough free throws
down the stretch to hand on for
the win.
The Mustangs were led by
Ingraham with 10 points, eight re
bounds and two steals. Barber
also had 10 points, including a
three-pointer and two steals.
Hughes finished with five points,
while Maben and Brooke Boyer
each had four rebounds.

U of I honors athletes
The University of Idaho
honored 64 student athletes for
their academic standing at the
1999 scholar-athlete reception
held on campus in February.
Gary Munkers of Lexington
was one of the students honored.
He is a student trainer, majoring
in physical education.
Students who achieved at least a
3.0 GPA for two consecutive
semesters during the 1997-98
academic year were eligible for
the honor.
Munkers was among five UI
student trainers honored at the
reception.
Petra Elguezabal, a 1998
graduate of Heppner High
School, has been selected for
Western Oregon University's
1999 softball team.
The 5'9" freshman will join two
other freshmen, Brooke Spencer,
Newport, and Shannon Reynolds,
Santiam Christian, Albany, as
backup for catcher Kelly Healy,
McKay High School, Salem, a
three-year starter for the WOU
Wolves.
The Wolves will play this
Friday and Saturday at Richland.
Friday they will go up against
Simon Fraser at noon and Pacific
at 2 p.m. On Saturday they will
play Willamette at 9 am .,
George Fox at 1 p.m. and
Concordia at 3 p.m. A
championship round will be
played Sunday with the time to
be announced.
March 10, the Wolves will play
Concordia in Portland, beginning
at 2 p.m. After that they travel to
California for four games before
playing at Lacey, WA, March 30
and Portland on March 31.

Interstate considered
through Heppner area
The Oregon Department of
Transportation is considering the
feasibility of extending Interstate
82 through Eastern Oregon to
California. Two of the proposed
routes would include Heppner.
One route would join 1-82 with
Highway 97 either through
Madras, Antelope. Fossil and
Heppner or Pnneville, Mitchell,
Spray and Heppner. Another
proposed route would join 1-82
with Highway 395 through John
Day, Bums and Lakeview. It is
estimated that the cost to upgrade
the routes into four-lane
highways would be around SI
billion
Umatilla Mayor George Hash
testified before the House
Transportation Committee in
Salem on the proposal which, he
says, would benefit farmers in
Eastern Oregon. A new interstate
would also ease traffic on the
»
busy 1-5. A second legislative
hearing before the House
Transportation Committee was
scheduled for Wednesday, March
3, at the Capitol Building.
