SIX - Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, February 17,1999
HHS site council holds meeting
The Heppner High School Site
Council, at their January 13
meeting, approved a request for
technology teacher Dave Fowler
to attend the Northwest Council
For
Computer
Education
Conference March 17-20 in
Seattle.
The total cost, in addition to
F ow ler's
p ro fe ssio n a l
development stipend, is $706.
Because the council felt costs
could be cut in the areas of hotel
and mileage, it was agreed to
allot five hundred dollars to
Fowler.
The council also
requested that he do a
presentation to the staff about
the conference. It was suggested
that money for this conference
be put into the computer tech
budget for next year.
In connection with the
conference request, computer
instruction for the HHS staff was
I
discussed. Anthony agreed to
get ideas from his staff as to the
areas of instruction desired.
These could then be scheduled
into small, hands-on workshops
on staff in-service days next
year
Sally Walker, HHS language
arts instructor, gave a brief
explanation of the Accelerated
Reader Program.
She then
allowed council members to take
actual
Accelerated Reader
quizzes on the computers.
Members present were
Heppner High School Principal
Ron Anthony, teachers Jason
Just, Steve Brownfield, Tanya
Scanlon and Juan Elguezabal,
HHS staff member Ginger
Bowman, Molly Rhea, April
Sykes and Marianne Kahl. Also
present, in addition to Walker,
was advisory board member
Kelly Merrill. Member Charlie
Anderson was absent.
Parenting workshop slated
A workshop entitled "Love and
Logic", focusing on parenting
skills for parents with children
from two through the teen years,
has
been
scheduled
for
Wednesday, Feb. 24, at 6:30 p.m.
at the Family Resource Building
above Coast to Coast in Heppner.
"It will add a wealth of resource
tools for the parent in dealing
with all sorts of situations with
their children," said Marilyn
Bader-Nesse, Morrow County
Behavioral Health prevention
specialist. "It will empower the
parent and crate a non-hostile
environment for the family."
Presenter is Darwin Merrill,
director of the Commission on
Children and Families.
Everyone is invited to come
and bring specific issues.
Day care will be provided for
those in attendance.
