Mustang JV boys rally to beat Bulldogs

After falling behind in the first
quarter, the Heppner Mustang JV
boys’ basketball team rallied past
the visiting Culver Bulldogs, 50-
44, on Saturday, Feb. 13.
The Bulldogs ran out to a 13-8
lead after one, but the Mustangs
came back to take a 22-20 lead at
halftime. Joe Papmeau scored six
points in the third to help the Mus­
tangs take a 38-27 lead going into
the fourth.
Michael McCabe took a hard
hit to the side of his head and had
to leave the game for awhile, but
came back to hit six of six free
throws and score eight points in
the fourth as the Mustangs held
on for the win. As a team, the
Mustangs hit 8-11 free throws in
the fourth quarter.
McCabe led the Mustangs with
17 points, including 9-10 from the
free throw line. Papineau finished
with 14 points and Stefan Matheny
chipped in with seven.
The Mustangs improved to 13-
2 on the season, with two games
remaining.
In boys' varsity action, the
Helix Grizzlies squeaked out a
win against the lone Cardinals ,
54-51.
The Cardinals were down 29-
41 at the end of the third quarter
but
Mark
McElligott
successfully launched three
baskets from the three-point
region, along with an additional
four points. Allan Gnbskov
added a three-point shot in the
third quarter and Brad Bumght
added another nine points to the
Cardinal score, but the Cards fell
short by three points at the end
of the game.
Mark McElligott pumped in
20 points for the Cardinal men,
deflected two Grizzly baskets,
pulled in eight rebounds,
shoveled out nine assists and
nabbed four steals.
Freshman Brad Burright aided
the Cardinal effort with 15
points.
Coach Dennis Stefani said he
was pleased with the team's
performance,

The lone Lady Cardinals' JV
squad couldn't quite take over
the Heppner Mustangs, losing
27-20 Feb. 9.
The Cardinals struggled the first
half, scoring nine points to

the only three-point shot in the
game during the second quarter.

point, but was only able to score
three points. All three were free
throws made by freshman,
Kristen Davidson.

while Jennifer Thompson and
Cyndi Heagy each added two
and held the Fillies to six points.
Kristina Powell led the Lady
Cardinals in rebounds and
blocked two shots. Nonnee
Walters and Salli McElligott
seized three steals each from
Heppner.
Lead scorers for
Heppner were Meghan Bailey
with 11 points, followed by
Shelley Rietmann with eight
points.

Mustangs girls run past
Culver Bulldogs

The Heppner Mustang varsity
girls’ basketball team stayed in
the thick o f things for a spot in the
district playoffs by running past the
visiting Culver Bulldogs, 59-34, on
Saturday, Feb. 13. The win im­
proves the Mustangs’ Columbia
Basin Conference record to 6-4
and their overall record to 9-11.
Jill Barber got the Mustangs
going by completing a three-point
play to give the Mustangs a lead
they would never relinquish.
C asey Ingraham hit a three-
pointer as the Mustangs took a 10-
7 lead after one quarter.
Ingraham scored six points and
Amy Papineau hit a three-pomfbf
as the Mustangs continued to in­
crease their lead to 24-16 at half­
time.
B arber and Ingraham each
scored seven points as the Mus­
tangs outscored the Bulldogs 19-
8 in the third to take a 43-24 lead.

Jaci H ughes hit 9-10 free
throws in the fourth quarter as the
Mustangs increased their lead to
win going away.
Ingraham led the Mustangs
with 22 points and six rebounds.
Barber^iad 12 points and Hughes
finished with 11 points, four as­
sists and four steals. Jessica
Maben had two blocked shots.
The Mustangs go on the road
for their final two regular season
games at Weston-McEwen on
Friday night, Feb. 19, and at
Stanfield on Saturday, Feb. 20.

only three
The lone JV men hosted Helix
in a close game and lost by only
by three points, 54-57.
lone outscored the Helix
Grizzlies the first quarter, 9-4.
Helix found the groove the
second quarter, pumping in 22
points to lead the Cardinals 26-
22 at the end of the first half.
The remainder of the game
remained tight with lone adding
33 points in the second half and
the Grizzlies adding 31.
Jeremy Rietmann led the
Cardinal JV team with 18 points
and pulled out seven rebounds
and two steals. Adam Neiffer
and Ryan Bennetto added 11
points each to the Cardinal
score. Jacob Neiffer had an
outstanding, game grabbing
eight rebounds for the Cardinals.

A combination o f missed free
throws and missed open shots led
to the Heppner Mustang boys’
varsity basketball team coming out
on the short end o f a 40-37 score
against the visiting Culver Bull­
dogs on Saturday, Feb. 13.
The loss drops the Mustangs’

record to 6-4 and their overall
record to 13-8. The Mustangs re­
main in third place going into the
final weekend o f league play with

Stanfield.
The Bulldogs jumped out to a
10-4 lead before a basket by Craig
Scott and two free throws by
Shane Matheny cut the lead to 12-
8 at the end o f the first.
With three starters out of the
game with foul trouble, the Mus­
tangs needed to rely on the bench
to keep them in the game. Ryan
Matteson and Joe Papineau each
scored four points and Riley
Ttngue and Bias Elguezabal played
good defense to help the Mus­
tangs play the Bulldogs even for
the second quarter. Heppner tied
the game twice during the quar­
ter, once on a Tim Dickenson
jumper and another on a Scott
basket. But Culver scored the last
four points o f the quarter to take
a 26-22 lead at halftime.

In a low-scoring third quarter,
the Mustangs took their only lead
of the game on an Eckman tip-in
with 2:00 remaining, but a Bull­
dogs’ three-pointer gave them
back the lead at 31 -30 going into
the fourth quarter.
Another Eckman tip-m late in
the game cut the Bulldogs’ lead
to 37-35. A Bulldogs’ free throw
made it 38-35 w ith :25 left.
Dickenson laid in a missed three-
pointer to make it 38-37 with :04
left. A foul on the inbounds pass
and two made free throws gave
the Bulldogs a 40-37 lead with just
:02 left and a half court shot at
the buzzer was just a little short
by the Mustangs.
Dickenson led the Mustangs
with 10 points, eight rebounds,
three assists and two steals.
Eckman had 10 points and six re­
bounds in limited playing time be­
cause of foul trouble. Matheny
grabbed five rebounds and Derek
Gunderson dished out three as­
sists.

girls’ basketball team ran their
record to 12-3 on the year by eas­
ily beating the visiting Culver Bull­
dogs, 48-23, on Saturday, Feb. 13.
The Mustangs raced out to an
8-2 lead after one and a 22-6 lead
at h alftim e. The M ustangs
outscored the Bulldogs, 26-17, in
the second half to coast to the win.
Shelley Rietmann scored eight
points to lead a balanced scoring
attack. Stephanie Clough hit a
three-pointer and scored seven
points. San Juanita Elguezabal
also hit a three-pointer and scored
six points. Jenni Patton hit for six
points. The Mustangs made 13-
20 from the free throw line.

Cardinals dominate Grizzlies
The lone Lady Cardinal Varsity
team dominated the Helix team
and won the game against the
Grizzlies, 52-28.
Nikki McElligott led the lone
ladies with 23 points, 12
rebounds, four steals and two
blocked shots. Brandi Brantley
had an excellent game, adding
another 12 points to the Cardinal
reign, including one three-point
shot in the second quarter. Niki
Sullivan added eight points to
lone's score and grabbed five
rebounds. Sophomore Allison
Halvorsen played excellent
defense,
