Mustangs romp TigerScots
Lady Cards dump Touchet;

The Lady Cardinals traveled to

league game.
The JV squad fell victim to
Touchet at the end of two
quarters 8-12.
The Lady

The Heppner Mustangs easily
defeated the visiting Weston-
McEwen TigerScots, 62-44, on
Friday, Jan. 29. The win moved
the Mustangs to third place in the
Columbia Basin Conference at
four wins and two losses and 10-
6 overall.
Heppner jumped out quickly as
Shane Matheny scored the first
eight points for the Mustangs and
a basket by Tim Dickenson made
it 10-4. The TigerScots closed to
within 10-9, but that was as close
as they would get the rest of the
game. Derek Gunderson, Ryan
Matteson and Dickenson scored
the last five points of the quarter
as Heppner led 19-9 at the end of
one.
The Mustangs didn’t let up in
the second quarter as Jared
Eckman made a couple of short
baskets and Dickenson hit two
more with 3:00 left to make it 28-

the third and Eckman hit for six
as the Mustangs increased their
lead to 59-34 entering the fourth
quarter.
The TigerScots outscored
Heppner 10-3, in a rough and
ragged fourth quarter, but it was
too little, too late, as Heppner eas­
ily held on to win 62-44.
Matheny, coming back from his
shoulder injury, led the Mustangs
with 20 points, six rebounds and
three assists. Dickenson added 10
points and nine rebounds, Eckman
finished with 11 points and
Gunderson had five steals.

Mustangs dropped by Eagles

The visiting Wahtonka Eagles
dropped the Heppner Mustangs,
67-51, on Saturday, Jan. 30. The
game was evenly played except
for the second quarter, which saw
the Eagles’ Jeff Stockett score 16
of his game-high 37 points to help
the Eagles outscore Heppner 23-
9 and take a 36-20 halftime lead.
The Mustangs couldn’t make
up the difference. Shane Matheny
scored 10 points in the fourth quar­
ter, but it wasn’t enough as the
Eagles held their 16-pomt lead
through the end.
The Mustangs were led by Tim
Dickenson with 16 points, includ­
ing eight for 10 from the free throw
line and eight rebounds. Matheny
ended up with 12 points and two
steals. Ryan Matteson scored nine
points and had two assists. Jared
Eckman scored seven points and
pulled down six rebounds. Derek
Gunderson had four steals and
dished out three assists.
The Mustangs drop to 4-3 in
the Columbia Basin Conference
and to 10-7 overall. Heppner will
hit the road this weekend with
games at Pilot Rock on Friday
night, Feb. 5 and at Sherman
County on Saturday, Feb. 5.

Lady Cards come up shy
A combination of the Lady
Cardinals JV and varsity teams
traveled to Arlington on
Saturday to spar with the
Honkers. The Cardinals came
up shy, 30-32, against the
Honkers at the end of the fourth
quarter.
Junior Brandi Brantley led the
Lady Cardinals in sconng with
11 points followed by freshman
Amellia Peck with nine points.
Brandi Brantley grabbed 10
rebounds for the Cardinals and
Amellia Peck had three steals.

Burright scored 13 points,
brought down six rebounds and
grabbed two steals. Mark
McElligott again dominated for
the Cardinals not only in scoring
but also led in rebounding and
captured five steals and blocked
two Cougar basket attempts.
Cardinal varsity falls
In boys' varsity action Ione fell
to the Honkers, 46-52.

strong for the Cardinals in the
first quarter, scoring eight

The second quarter seemed to
be slow for the Cardinals as they
scored only two points to
Arlington's eight, ending the
second quarter with Ione trailing
the Honkers by one point, 17-18.

much the front runner for the
Cardinals, leading in scoring
with 18 points and pilfering six

The Heppner Mustangs “C”
boys’ basketball team used a
strong second half to down the
Condon Blue Devils’ JV team 49-
37 on Monday, Feb. 1. _
David Norton came out on fire
in the first quarter, sconng 11 of
the Mustangs’ 14 points as Condon
could only manage two. But the
Blue Devils came back in the sec­
ond quarter to tie the game at 22-
22 at halftime.
The Mustangs used a good de­
fense in the second h a lf to
outscore the Blue Devils, 27-15,
to win the game going away.
Norton finished with a game-
high 22 points. Stefan Matheny
added 12 points, including a three-
pointer.
The win improved the “C”
team’s record to 10-3 for the year.
The Mustangs travel to Riverside
on Thursday, Feb. 4, with their
next home game on Thursday,
Feb. 11 against Spray.
