Editor — «T Hislers receive anniversary certificates Lighting contest winners announced Gail Hughes of Heppner won first place in the outdoor lighting contest sponsored by the Heppner Chamber of Commerce. She won a $50 prize Second place and $25 in the outdoor category went to Greg and Enka Grant, for their colorful property and "Bah Humbug" fence. The first place award in the indoor category, as judged from the street looking in, goes to Judie and Butch Laughlin on Cannon Street. They won a $25 award. Second place and $ 15 went to the Richard Flaiz family. The judges considered decorations in addition to lighting as their reasoning for selecting Bucknum's Tavem as best festive business decorations this year. Bucknum's was awarded $20. In the "just for fun" category, the judges thought South Chase Street won as the best street in town. Homeowners there showed a high percentage of participation and lots of effort and creativity in their displays, said a committee member. "The Chamber of Commerce encourages folks to get out and about and appreciate our beautiful town," they said. The committee commented that they "enjoyed their task, regardless of the zero degree weather." Obituaries Ruby J. Munkers Paul and Kathleen Hisler received a framed certificate from S t Patrick’a Parish when they celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary. Lady Cards outscore Vikings The lone Lady Cardinals traveled to Umatilla on Dec. 21 to take on the Umatilla Vikings. The Cardinals outscored the Vikings, 48-35. lone raced out the first half leading Umatilla, 29-14. Nikki McElligott did an outstanding job for lone with 21 points. She also pulled down 21 rebounds, dished up seven assists, had three steals and four blocked shots. Niki Sullivan did her fair share with 11 points, seven rebounds and two blocked shots. Chanssa Gates hit a three-point bucket in the first quarter and Brandi Brantley added another three- point shot in the second quarter to overcome the Vikings. The Cardinals lost Camie Burright on Saturday night to a knee injury and it is undetermined when she will be able to return. The Cardinal boys JV team fell short against the Umatilla Vikings on Monday. Umatilla defeated the Cardinals 82-34. The lone boys had a slow start in the first quarter with Dustin Haguewood injuring his ankle only five minutes into the first quarter. At the end of the first quarter lone trailed behind Umatilla 25- 5. Jacob Neiffer came out to jumpstart the Cardinals by scoring a bucket within the first two minutes of the second quarter. The Cardinals were able to score 11 points the second quarter and hold Umatilla to four points. Sophomore Zak Fabian raced out the fourth quarter to score nine points, one from the three- point range. Dylan Pettyjohn sparked the Cardinal defense with a key steal under the Viking basket, drew a foul from Umatilla, rebounded his own free throw and went back up for two with just a few minutes remaining in the game. The Cardinal men struggled with their passing and had numerous turnovers but retaliated with nine steals in the game. The Lady Cardinal JV team couldn't keep up with the Umatilla Vikings on Monday. Umatilla defeated lone 47-16. Freshman Salli McElligott hit a three point shot in the fourth quarter, leading the Cardinals with seven points. Jennifer Thompson had an excellent game at the boards, pulling down several rebounds. Kristina Powell was certainly an asset with her aggressive defensive game. Umatilla's Lindsay Dahlin was unstoppable, dropping in 15 points for the Vikings. Munkers, 66, of Hepp ner, died Wednesday, December 16,1998, at her home. Graveside service was held Saturday, December 19, 1998 at the Heppner Masonic Cemetery. She was bom November 5, 1932, at Birch Tree, Missouri, to Ernest and Ollie Clark Teague. When she was seven, the family moved to Oregon. She attended school at Warrenton and Rose- burg. On June 16,1951, she married Donald L. Munkers at Stevenson, Washington. Following his dis charge from the military in 1952, the couple moved to Heppner. In 1965, she began working at Pioneer Memorial Hospital, first as an aide and later as purchasing agent. She enjoyed camping, hunting, fishing, ceramics and spending time with family and friends. Survivors include daughters, Kay Alldritt of Lexington, and Donna Acock of Irrigon; sons, Steve Munkers of Umatilla, and Dale M unkers o f Lexington; mother Ollie Montee; stepbrother, C.E. Montee, Jr.; stepsisters, Toni Montee and Letha Milky, all of Bois D’Arc, Missouri; stepmother, M arie Teague o f Eugene; 17 grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Sweeney Mortuary of Hepp ner was in charge o f arrange ments. Larry E. Simmons, Jr. Larry E. Simmons, Jr., 63, Wichita, Kansas, died Sunday, December 20, 1998, at his home. A graveside service was held Wednesday, Dec. 23, at Claflin Cemetery, Claflin, Kansas. Burial was at the Claflin Cemetery with military graveside rites by Great Bend VFW Post 3111. The Rev. Lou o f Wichita for the past two years. Prior to that he lived in Claflin, Kansas. He was a US Army veteran and a member of the VFW Post 3111 of Great Bend, Kansas. Survivors include a daughter, Cindy Davis, Heppner; sons, Ed Simmons, Jr., Rob Simmons and Troy Simmons, Heppner; step children, Mary Ann, Mitch and Michael Simmons; brothers Harold and Bobby Joe Simmons, both of Wichita; and sisters, Opal Hettinger, Wichita, and Shirley Schmidt, Tacoma. Mr. Simmons was a resident Aldo G. Vargas A ldo G. V argas, 39, o f Boardman, died Friday, Decem ber 18, 1998, in a motor vehicle accident near Hermiston. Funeral service and burial will be at Juluchuca, Mexico. Mr. Vargas was bom August 16,1959, in Mexico and had been a resident of Boardman the past two years. He was employed as a sales man for Tri-City Nissan and Simpson of Tri-Cities, Washing ton. He and his wife, Aida, were married December 24, 1997, in Mexico. Survivors include his wife, Aida Vargas of Boardman; par ents, Bautista and Juana Giron Solis Vargas in Mexico; a son, Aldo G. Vargas, Jr., of Boardman; and brothers, Armando Vargas in Nebraska and Jose Agustin of Giron, Mexico. Bums Mortuary of Hermiston is in charge of arrangements. Edith B. Musgrave Edith B. Musgrave, 88, Hermiston died Saturday, December 19, 1998, in Hermiston. Graveside service was held Wednesday, December 23, at the Monument Cemetery Mrs. Musgrave was bom on November 28, 1910, near Hardman, the third of four children bom to John and Maggie Stevens. Her mother passed away when the children were small and her father raised all four children on a small farm near Hardman. While cooking at area ranches, Edith met and married Stanley W. Musgrave on December 4, 1941. They took over the Dave Musgrave Ranch on Monument Mountain where they spent their life farming. Many of these years they farmed in a partnership with Lois and Rho Bleakman and family. After her husband passed away in 1986, Edith lived the first year with her granddaughter, Rhonda, in Redmond. She later moved to Bend Villa Court where she lived the following 10 years. One year ago in December she moved to Hermiston to be near Rhonda. Mrs. Musgrave was a full time housewife and mother, helping out on the ranch when needed. She was a member of the Legion Auxiliary. She enjoyed life, family and neighbors, cooking, berry picking, sewing and quilting. . She is survived by a daughter, Mirinda Stuart of Haines, Alaska; granddaughters Rhonda, and Regina, Regina's husband and three great-granddaughters. She was preceded in death by her husband, Stanley in 1986; her son John David in 1952; brothers, Jim and Harold; and sister, Alta. Bums Mortuary of Hermiston was in charge of arrangements.
