Lady Cardinals sink Viking battleship
Cardinal boys lose to Umatilla
The Lady Cardinals sunk the
Umatilla Vikings' battleship,
defeating the Vikings, 53-44, on
Tuesday, December 2.
Camie' Bumght led the
Cardinal defense with 16 points
and four steals.
Nikki
McElligott followed Bumght
with 14 points to her credit,
blocked five Vikmg shots and
led the Cardinal team in
rebounds. Niki Sullivan led the
team in assists.
Coach Chris Davis said, "This
was a good first win. We were
fagged at times, but we played
hard."
First game jitters plagued the
Cardinal boys’ varsity team as
the Vikings sailed to a 90-32 |
victory.
Cardinal scoring was led by
Korey Morgan with nine points.
Mark McElligott followed with
seven points. Korey Morgan
countered the Viking attack with
a three-point shot in the third
quarter. Senior Ryan Bennetto
sank a three-point bucket in the
fourth quarter but the Viking
offense was still too strong for
the struggling Cardinal team.
Umatilla lead scorer, CJ Savage,
launched seven three- point
shots in the game that led the
Vikings on their victory voyage.
The Cardinal boys junior
varsity team was unable to hold
off the Vikings. The Viking
squad outscored the Cardinals,
78-36. Adam McCabe led the
Cardinal team with 10 points,
followed by Jeremy Rietmann
with nine points.
John
Ferguison
was
leading
rebounder for the Cardinals.
The Lady Cardinal JV squad
couldn't hold Umatilla back for a
48-23 win.
Freshmen Cyndi Heagy and
Kristina Powell both led the
Cardinals in rebounds. Sybil
Krebs topped the team with
seven points followed by
Jennifer Thompson and Kristina
Powell.
Coach Duane Neiffer said he
was pleased with the first JV
performance of the season.
Lady Cards defeat Mustangs in tight race
Boys varsity loses to Heppner
The lone Lady Cardinals
varsn, basketball team defeated
the Heppner Mustangs in a tight
race on their home court on
December 5.
The Mustangs handed the
Cardinals losses on all games
except u~ girls varsity.
The game between the Lady
Cardinals and the Heppner
Mustangs was intense the entire
game but it was the Lady
Cardinals that came out with a
38-35 win.
The game stayed within four
points throughout the game and
both teams were evenly
matched.
The Cardinals were aided by
Brandi Brantley with the most
defensive rebounds.
Camie
Burright scored 16 points, three
of those the result of a three
point shot in the fourth quarter
Charissa Gates had seven points,
two of which were field goals.
Shelby Krebs surprised coach
Chris Davis with a three-point
bucket in the fourth quarter.
Coach Davis stated, "This is
not the kind of game we are used
to. We want-to push the ball and
score fast. The girls did a great
job adapting to the game."
The Heppner Mustangs were
led by Jill Barber with 12 points
followed by Casey Ingraham
with
eight.
The
Fillies
successfully launched four field
goals, two by Barber, and one
each by Jaci Hughes and Janelle
Healy.
In boys' varsity action, the
Heppner Mustangs rounded up a
win, defeating the Cardinals, 63-
29.
Cardinal defense had a hard
time keeping up with lead
scorers, Jared Eckman and Ryan
Matteson. The first quarter hurt
the Cardinals, allowing the
Mustangs to score 21 points to
lone's 5. The Cardinal squad
allowed the Mustangs to score
only 12 points in the second
quarter.
Jacob Neiffer countered the
Mustang attack with a three-
point shot in the second quarter,
bringing the total number of
points scored for lone in that
quarter to 11. The Cardinals
were able to keep Matteson from
scoring the remainder of the
game but were unable to keep
the Mustangs from scoring
another 30 points by the end of
the fourth quarter.
Brad Bumght led the lone men
in scoring and cleaned up under
the basket with rebounds.
Patrick Davidson also made his
presence known under the
basket, pulling in rebounds for
the Cardinals.
Coach Dennis Stefani said he is
"seeing improvement in the
team"
and
hopes
that
"everything will come together
before the league play starts."
The Lady Cardinal JV team had
an excellent game that left them
trailing the Mustangs only 20-27
at the end of the game.
Coach Duane Neiffer said he
was
impressed
with
the
continuing improvement of the
girls.
The team as a whole played
more
aggressively
both
offensively and defensively.
Jeanette Brantley led the team in
scoring, followed by Salli
McElligott. Five-foot, two-inch
sophomore Nonnee Walters
launched a successful three-
point shot, announcing to the
Mustangs that "height doesn't
matter if you play from the
heart." Neiffer praised Cyndi
Heagy, saying, "She continues to
be a solid rebounder and led the
team in steals with four thefts of
the ball."
The Cardinal Boys JV squad
was defeated by Heppner, 34-55.
Adam McCabe led the
Cardinals with 11 points,
shooting 75 percent at the line.
Dustin Haguewood followed
with six points and three blocked
shots in the second half. The
Mustangs had to keep a careful
watch on Adam Neiffer who
nabbed three steals from his
opponents. John Ferguison did
an outstanding job rebounding
for the lone team.

Kool Kitchen Kids

On November 5, the Kool
Kitchen kids met at the
Extension office after school
until five p.m. on Thursday. It
was their first meeting.
Members passed out the
materials that they needed for
the year. They also elected their
president,
vice
president,
secretary and news reporter.
Laune Murray is reporter,
Shanna Rietmann is president,
Mahaley Huddleston is vice
president and Blair Keithley is
secretary.
They also listened to Shelly
Rietmann's presentation about
our U.S. flag. She is an
intermediate member.

on November 21, 1998 at Good
Shepherd Community Hospital in
Hermiston. The baby weighed 8
