Judy Rea to
head OWGL
Morrow County farmer Judy
Rea was elected president of the
Oregon Wheat Growers League.
She is the league's first woman
president
in
its
72-year
existence.
Judy and her
husband, Keith, farm near lone.
Other officers for the next year
include Sherman Reese, Echo,
vice president; Tom McCoy,
Sherman County, secretary-
treasurer, and Mac Kems,
Haines, past president. Daren
Coppock continues as executive
vice president.
Rea said her goals for the
OWGL
include increasing
membership. She said efforts by
the league and its national arm,
the National Association of
Wheat Growers, brought fanners
some $3 billion in government
payments this year.
"We are definitely going to
push for the marketing tools that
were promised in the 1996 farm
bill," she said.
"We have done what is
required of us in the farm bill,
and now it's up to Washington to
activate their end and give us the
marketing tools we need."
Rea joins Sharon Beck, Cove,
president of the Oregon
Cattlemen's Association, as a
leader in Oregon's two major
commodities - beef and wheat.
Both Rea and Beck take active
roles in running their farms.
"I do the books and records and
raise the kids," Rea said. The
Reas have four grown sons.
Rea said leadership roles
should be open to women as a
matter of course. "I've never
made an issue of being a
woman" she said.
Rea has headed OWGL
committees and two years ago
was elected secretary-treasurer,
serving this year as vice
president.
"I want the league to be pro
active not re-active," she said.
Rea said she wants the league to
continue working closely with
the Oregon Wheat Commission.
Nationally, she said she is
impressed by the new leadership
in NAWG and in U. S. Wheat
Associates,
the
foreign
marketing arm of the wheat
industry.

A leading West Coast wheat
trader foresees the pnee of
wheat slowly improving for
Northwest growers.
Mark Pahnquist, senior -vice
president of the Grain Marketing
Division of Cenex/Harvest
Sates, told the Oregon Wheat
Growers League Nov. 30 that he
expects the supply-demand
equation to begin to favor
producers. Right now, there's
more wheat than demand and
prices have been very low.
"Quality" is one o f the keys to
price improvement, he said.
"Egypt is enthralled by our soft
white wheat and is paying a
premium of $8 a ton."
Pahnquist said the overall big
world wide crop is plagued by
quality problems, which gives
local producers an advantage.
"Our biggest competitor this
year is the European Union," he
said, with lots of wheat and
subsidies that help European
farmers.
Donation programs to hungry
nations help U. S. farmers, he
said, so long as the wheat isn't
sold back into the world market.
Pahnquist said the Loan
Deficiency Program "has been a
godsend" to farmers.
Growers will see more vertical
integration in wheat marketing,
he predicted, as well as such
horizontal
integration
as
Cargill's purchase of Continental
Grain.
