County receives
emergency
funds
Morrow County has been
chosen to receive $6,798 to
supplement emergency food and
shelter programs area.
The selection was made by a
national board that is chaired by
the
Federal
Emergency
Management Agency (FEMA)
and consists of representatives
from The Salvation Army,
American Red Cross, Council of
Jewish Federations, Catholic
Charities,
USA,
National
Council of the Churches of
Christ in the U.S.A. and United
Way of America which will
provide the administrative staff
and function as fiscal agent.
The board was charged to
distribute funds appropriated by
Congress to help expand the
capacity of food and shelter
programs in high need areas
around the country.
A local board made up of the
Morrow County Commission on
Children & Families will
determine how the funds
awarded to Morrow County are
to be distributed among the
emergency food and shelter
programs ru t by local service
organizations in the area. The
local board is responsible for
recommending agencies to
receive these funds and any
additional funds available under
this phase of the program.
Under the terms of the grant
from the National Board, local
governmental
or
private
voluntary organizations chosen
to receive funds must: be
nonprofit; have an accounting
system;
practice
nondiscrimination;
have
demonstrated the capability to
deliver emergency food and/or
shelter programs; and, if they
are
a
private
voluntary
organization, they must have a
voluntary board.
Qualifying organizations are
urged to apply, said Dar Merrill,
director of the Morrow County
Commission on Children and
Families
The deadline for applications is
December 7, 1998.

HHS students
invited to
IHS dance
Heppner High School
students are invited to attend a
dance at lone High School on
Saturday, December 5, from the
conclusion of the Ione-Heppner
boys' varsity basketball game
until 12:30 a.m.
Admission is $1 and students
must show their student body
cards.
Games start at 1 p.m.
beginning with girls' junior
varsity, then boys' junior
varsity, girls' varsity and then
boys' varsity.
The Christmas tree on Main Street in Heppner is up. Now, if the
wind that has been plaguing the area for the last week doesn't blow
it down.
The towering evergreen was donated by Earl and Thelma Jenks of
Heppner. Columbia Basin Electric Coop cut and placed the tree.
The Jenks home was previously owned by Harold and Inez Erwin,
who have since passed away. Harold Jenks was a brand inspector
who worked for many ranches in the area and Inez was a
schoolteacher.
Pool season passes offered;
spa hours set
The Willow Creek Waterpark
spa hours are Tuesday and
Thursday from 6-9 a.m. and 6-6
p.m. Those interested in other
times on those days should call
ahead for an appointment, 676-
5752. The cost is $2.50 per 30
minute session.
Private hourly rental is
available by appointment for
$12.50 per hour with a
maximum of 15 persons.
Exercise classes are available.
Call the pool for more
information.
Pool passes are now available
and the waterpark has lowered
the price of season passes to
$125 for a family and $60 for
an individual. There will not be
a discount for lessons.

Robin Severinsen Merrill and
her husband Frank have won the
American
Quarter
Horse
Association
wor l d
championship show in amateur
cutting.
The horse, "My Stylish
Valentine," is also owned by
Winward Stud Farm at Purcell,
OK.
Robin has relatives in the
Heppner area, including the
Sherman and Beemer families
and is the granddaughter of Ora
Evans. Her mother is Evonne
Severinsen.
Joint holiday concert planned
A joint concert with the
South Morrow Community
Choir and the Willow Creek
Symphony will be held Sunday,
December 6, at 3 p.m. at the
Heppner Middle School gym
The choir will be directed by
Debbie Wryn and the symphony
by Ralph Werner. The concert
w ill include a variety of holiday
music.
A reception will be held
following the concert.
Everyone is invited to attend
and there will be no admission
charge.
