Mustangs begin
basketball
season Dec. 1
By Rick Paullua
An experienced Heppner Mus
tangs boys’ varsity basketball
team will take the floor against the
visiting Condon Blue Devils on
Tuesday, Dec. 1. The Mustangs
lost only one player from last
year’s team, Columbia Basin Con
ference first team guard, Chris
Anthony.
The Mustangs return six se
niors who have considerable var
sity experience. CBC first team
seniors Tim Dickenson, Shane
M atheny, Derek G underson,
Casey Evans, Jared Eckman and
Bias Elguezabal are joined by 6’4”
senior Riley Tingue, who hasn’t
played basketball for a few years.
Rounding out the varsity squad are
sophomores Ryan Matteson, who
got varsity experience last year,
Craig Scott, Blake Knowles and
Joe Papineau. K now les and
Papineau will play four quarters
of JV ball and suit down for var
sity games.
Matheny is coming back from
a shoulder injury suffered during
the football season. He will be
going through rehabilitation and
practicing mostly left-handed.
“We’re setting our sights on
getting Shane back by league
play,” new head coach Chuck
Matteson said. The first CBC
game is on Jan. 8, with a home
game against Pilot Rock.
Coach Matteson, who has had
most of the team for only three
practices due to football, will be
helped by JV coach Tony Pupo
and C-team coach Ken Eckman.
The three coaches have 33 play
ers out to work with.
Culver, Wahtonka, Sherman
and Stanfield all should be strong
contenders in the CBC. With the
State 2A Tournament expanding
to 16 teams, the top two teams
from the district tournament will
go to state.
“Our goal is to win all our home
games and split on the road. If we
can do that, we will be right in the
running,” said coach Matteson.
A fter the Condon game,
Umatilla will travel to Heppner on
Friday, Dec. 4, with the JV girls’
game beginning at 3 p.m. The JV
boys will follow, then the varsity
girls. The varsity boys will end the
night
On Saturday, Dec. 5, the Mus
tangs will travel to lone, with the
games starting at 1 p.m.
