Many parents and community
members attended a tree planting

kindergarten through fifth grade
donated money to buy a Marshall

playground.
Many of the students earned
money for the project gathering
pop cans and working for family
and friends.
Marlene Pointer's fifth grade
class prepared the ground and did
the planting work. Students all
signed a note commemorating the
event and buried it by the tree for
future generations to find.
The planting included a program.
Students sang "I Need the Earth
and the Earth Needs Me,"
followed by the flag salute led by

Paul Hisler, Sr.
Kathleen Monahan Hisler
Paul and Kathleen Hisler of
Heppner celebrated their 70th
wedding anniversary November
14.
Paul and Kathleen Hisler were
married by Father Brady,
November 14, 1928, in Heppner.
Kathleen's brother, Jim Monahan,
drove
the
newlyweds
to
Arlington, where they took a train
to Portland and stayed at the
Imperial hotel When they
returned home to Heppner, Paul
bought an Essex car from Jim
Thomson's uncle for $50.
The Hislers resided with
Kathleen's parents, Frank and
Marie Monahan, for five months,
until Paul was old enough to take
over the ranch on Little Butter
Creek. When Paul reached the
age of 21 they moved out of tow n
to their ranch, where they lived
for 67 years and raised their three
children, Joan Sumner, who lives
in The Dalles, Francine Bristow,
who lives in Portland and Paul
Hisler, Jr., who lives in Heppner.
The
Hislers
have
eight
grandchildren and 10 great
grandchildren.
Paul and Kathleen now live in
Heppner where they receive
"wonderful home care and have
great friends and family to care
for them."
They celebrated their 70th
anniversary with their children.

and jewelry of the spectators. In
modem sports, winners are also
treated like heroes, but spectators
just pay for tickets. (Although
sometimes they do throw roses.)
Another difference is why the
games are played. Tlachtli was
sometimes played to settle
arguments without going to war.
Modem sports are played for fun
and profit.
Finally, in these modem sports,
the ball can touch the ground, but
in tlachtli, it can’t.
"We all enjoyed playing
tlachtli," said the students. "And
we’re glad no one got sacrificed."
