Heppner claimed fifth place in
the 16 team OSAA 2A State
Volleyball Tournament held
November 12-14 at Lane
Community College in Eugene.
As in the 1997 state tournament,
the Mustangs' only loss came in
the opening round, which paired
them with Oakridge, who ended
up
winning
the
state
championship.
The Mustangs didn't look to
quite be on their game as they
lost 8-15, 6-15, to Oakridge on
Thursday,
November
12.
Heppner’s first server, Jill
Barber, scored on her first three
serves to grab the early lead for
the Mustangs before serving into
the net to turn the ball over to
the Warriors.
Oakridge soon gained the lead
and gradually added to it as
Heppner committed multiple
serving and receiving errors.
These errors, coupled with the
hitting
and
blocking of
Oakridge's 5'10" Misty White,
silenced Heppner’s offense. In
spite of the errors, the Mustangs
put up quite a fight as they took
the Warriors through three
complete
rotations
before
succumbing to the allotted 15
points.
Game two looked like a shorter
version of the first game with
every Mustang scoring run
ending in a service error. The
Mustangs just weren't able to
shake off their jitters and play
good volleyball in that first
match and Heppner moved onto
the left side of the bracket to
compete for consolation.
Friday, November 13, the
Heppner squad led off the
breakfast bracket with an 8 a.m.
start.
Matched up against
Enterprise, Heppner took the
win in two games, 15-10, 16-14.
In spite of the early hour, the
Mustangs looked fired up and
ready in game one against the
Enterprise Savages.
The Mustangs nullified the
Savages' first scoring attempt
with a Casey Ingraham kill.
Barber served Heppner's first
point off an Enterprise net
penalty, then the Mustangs lost
the possession with a net penalty
of their own. The Savages
scored their first four points off
Mustang penalties or failed
attacks
before
Ingraham
smashed down another kill to
reclaim the ball for Heppner.
Amber Peck scored Heppner’s
second point off another penalty.
Point three came when the
Savages made the mistake of
over-passing to Ingraham who
then slammed the ball to their
hardwood. Peck aced point four
and scored point five on another
overpass to Janelle Healy who
tipped it down. Point six came
off an Ingraham kill and point
seven from an Enterprise
penalty, before the Mustangs
were called in the net for the
Savage sideout.
Enterprise was able to even the
score at seven off two Mustang
penalties and a missed attack
before again being called in the
net. Ingraham aced point eight
with her jump serve, but then
put her next attempt into the net.
The Savages pulled out to a two-
point lead as they scored points
eight and nine off Mustang
penalties and blocked an attack
by Boyer for point 10. Healy
powered up to shank a hit off an
Enterprise block to gain the
sideout.
Boyer's serve was silenced by
an Enterprise kill, but Heppner
got the ball back when Barber
answered w ith a kill of her own.
Healy then aced point nine to
narrow the margin to one point
before serving into the net. The
Savages' next serve was sent
back to them as Kim Pointer
slammed down the kill. Jaci
Hughes scored Heppner's 10th
point to tie it up on an Enterprise
penalty . The Savages stopped
her service when they hit into a
Mustang double block that
dropped onto Heppner wood.
Peck racked up the next
Mustang kill to silence the
Savage serve attempt to send
Barber back to score point 11
with help from a Hughes' save,
ace point 12, point 13 when
Enterprise couldn't handle a hit
by Peck and point 14 on another
Enterprise error. Barber scored
the game-winning 15th point
after a long rally in which the
Savages pulled out a great save
off the lights only to have
Ingraham slam down a kill for
15-10 Mustang victory.
In game two Ingraham again
crushed the ball on Enterprise's
first service attempt to allow
Peck to score Heppner's first
three points. Point one came
from a kill by Healy, while two
and three came off errors by the
Savages. The Mustangs lost the
possession with a penalty but
did not allow Enterprise to
score. Ingraham's jump serve
attempt went into the net, then
Enterprise scored their first two
points on Mustang mistakes,
before a double block by Pointer
and Boyer regained the ball for
Heppner.
'î'f/xu
Boyer aced Heppner’s fourth
point, but her next serve attempt
was hit down by a Savage
attack. Enterprise's next server
put the ball into the net, to send
Healy behind the line to put
Heppner ahead 7-2, scoring
point five off an Ingraham
backrow kill, point six with
Pointer out-blocking Enterprise's
5'H " Ashley Anderson, and
point seven behind a kill from
Peck. Healy's next serve came
back with a Anderson kill.
The Enterprise team was able
to regroup and answer back by
scoring points three through
eight mainly off Mustang lapses,
then Pointer reared back to
smash down a kill and reclaim
the ball for the Mustangs.
Hughes' serve tied the score at
eight off a Savage mistake, with
her next serve being tipped
down by Enterprise.
The
Savages scored their next two
points by blocking hits by Peck
before losing the possession to a
penalty.
The teams traded
possessions through the next
three servers with neither team
able to score, then Enterprise
was able to add another point to
their lead, scoring their 10th
point off a wide hit before losing
the ball to a penalty.
After two more service
rotations
Boyer
brought
Heppner back within two by
acing point nine, then the ball
was turned over with a service
error. The Mustangs committed
two more service errors and
Enterprise countered by scoring
point 12 off a wide attack.
Barber's next service attempt
was whistled dead with a net
penalty, then the Savages scored
points 13 and 14 as they blocked
hits by Ingraham and Amy
Drake. The Savages' game point
serve was sent back the them
with a block by Drake.
Peck scored Mustang points 10
and 11 off Enterprise mistakes,
aced point 12 and scored point
13 when the Savages were
unable to handle a well-placed
return. The Mustangs lost the
possession with a penalty. On
Enterprise's next attempt at
game point, Healy put down the
kill to take back the ball for the
Mustangs.
With the Mustangs trailing
13-14, Ingraham went back to
score point 14 off an Enterprise
net penalty, point 15 with the
help from a Pointer kill and
acing the game and match
winning point
16 to send
Heppner into the semi-finals.

L-R Brooke Boyer, Jaci Hughes, Jill Barber, Casey Ingraham and
Janelle Healy in action at the state 2A tournament.
The Mustangs again started off
the action on Saturday, with an 8
a.m. match against the Oakland
Oakers. The Heppner squad
again prevailed, winning 15-8,
9-15, 15-6.
In game one the Oakers pulled
out to a 0-3 lead before Boyer
slammed down a kill to gain the
sideout and Peck's serving tied
up the score with point one
coming from a Oakland mistake,
point two from an Ingraham kill
and point three from a left-
handed Healy kill, before
serv ing into the net. Healy again
delivered a hit that the Oakers
couldn't handle to take back the
serve. Ingraham scored point
four on a wide hit and aced point
five to put the Mustangs ahead
for good, before serving out the
back.
The next three servers were
unable to score, then Healy put
in point six with the kill coming
from Trisha Adams and aced
point seven. Her next service
attempt came back with the
Oakers putting down a kill.
Again, three sideouts occurred
before Barber aced point eight to
put the Mustangs ahead 8-3.
Barber then committed a service
error to hand the ball back to
Oakland. The Oakers scored
points three through seven off
Mustang mistakes, then on their
attempt to tie the score,
Ingraham
slammed
down
another kill.
Peck scored Heppner's point
nine with help from a Boyer
block and 10 on a wild hit, then
the Mustangs turned back the
ball on a wide hit.
Healy
shanked a ball off the Oakland
blockers
to
regain
the
possession. Ingraham scored
point 11 with a Pointer save and
aced point 12 before serving out
the back. The Oakers scored
their final point on a tip, then a
backrow kill by Peck took the
possession and sent Boyer back
to serve. Boyer scored point 13
off a Healy block, aced point 14
and scored point 15 behind a
Barber block, to take game one.
within one. The Mustangs were
unable to sustain their attack and
dropped game two, 9-15.
In game three the Oakers’ first
server scored two points on
Mustangs' mistakes before
committing an error to send the
ball over to the Mustangs.
Barber scored Heppner's first
four points, number one on an
Oakland mistake, point two
when the Oakers overset into an
Ingraham kill, and aced points
three and four, to put the
Mustangs in the lead for good.
The Oakers then put down a kill
to take the ball back.
Oakland had a wide hit to
negate their next serve attempt.
Peck aced point five and scored
point six after Healy put over a
tip that Oakland couldn't handle,
then the Mustangs gave it up on
a w ide hit of their own. Boyer
went way out for a save to keep
the Oakers from scoring and got
the ball back for Heppner.
The servo was traded back and
¡forth with ^he Mustangs steadily
.adding points to their total while
refusing to allow Oakland to
score until the Heppner squad
posted 15 points and put
themselves into the consolation
match for fifth place.
The Mustangs took the final
match against the Bonanza
Antlers, 15-13, 15-6, to earn
fifth place.
In game one the Mustangs led
5-0, then 11-5. and 13-6, before
letting the Antlers come homing
back with a five-point scoring
frenzy to narrow the margin to
one. The teams traded the serve
through four rotations. Peck
aced point 14 but a wild hit sent
the ball back to Bonanza. The
Antlers scored their 13th point
on a questionable line call but
their next attack went deep.
Ingraham aced Heppner's game
point to win game one.
The Mustangs came out strong
in the second game and soon
were ahead 3-0. The Antlers
came rattling back to knot the
score at three, then again at five.
Then Barber went back for her
second service rotation and
scored points six through nine to
put the Mustangs ahead for
good. Bonanza scored their
sixth and final point on a wild
Mustang attack, then served into
the net to send it back to
Heppner.
Peck scored point 10 on a
Healy kill; Ingraham aced
Heppner's 11 th point and scored
point 12 on a set-fake by Boyer.
Healy aced points 13 and 14,
and scored the game winning
point with Pointer blocking
down a Antler hit.
