Deer declare open season on vehicles
Each year it is estimated there
are approximately 500,000
deer/auto collisions in the
United States. These collisions
result over 100 deaths and
thousands of injuries. The
average cost of a deer/auto
collision is $2,000 per claim,
according to the Insurance
Information Institute.
As cold weather approaches,
the deer population is beginning
to move to lower elevations,
increasing dramatically the odds
of deer/auto collisions occurring
on our nation's highways.
The deer population in the U.S.
in 1998 is estimated at more
than 25 million. In the 1980s the
deer
population
was
approximately
10
million.
Losses can be expected to
continue to grow as the deer
population expands and urban
habitats encroach on the rural
environment.
To avoid hitting a deer, there
are some tips for defensive
driving:
-Exercise caution in the early
morning and evening hours

called to Othello. WA. to the fu
neral services for Rod Cronin,
who was the husband of their
granddaughter. Cronin was killed
in a tragic truck accident. Appar
ently, a northbound tanker filled
with carbon dioxide was passing
a sugar beet truck when it ran into
a southbound pickup. The pickup
was carrying cows, also killing the
animals. Autopsies were planned
for Friday.

Health officials investigate
disease outbreak in Echo
Health
officials
are
investigating
a
shigellosis
outbreak in Echo, a small town
about 20 miles west of
Pendleton.
Four cases of shigellosis have
been confirmed among students
at the Echo School since
October 15, according to Dr.
Paul Cieslak, communicable
diseases program manager at the
Oregon Health Division. "There
are additional, unconfirmed,
reports of illness among students
and staff at the school, and other
specimens are pending. None of
the ill persons have been
hospitalized, although at least
one child was treated for
dehydration."
Shigellosis is a bacterial
infection. Symptoms include
moderate to severe diarrhea,
fever, vomiting, and abdominal
cramps. Some persons may
develop
bloody
diarrhea.
Appropriate medical treatment
can sometimes shorten the
duration and severity of the
infection. Symptoms may persist
for three to five days or more it
left untreated. Even after
symptoms go away, some
infected persons will continue to
shed Shigella in their stool for
several weeks or even months.
A stool culture is necessary to
confirm the diagnosis. Parents
should consult their regular
physician if symptoms develop
in their children.
The source of the Echo
outbreak is currently unknown
The Health Division and the
Umatilla
County
Health
Department are investigating
possible sources at the school.
However, the school premises
and cafeteria
have been
inspected and meet normal
operating
standards.

This cluster is unrelated to a
school outbreak of Escherichia
coli
0157:H7
infections
currently being investigated in
nearby Finley, Washington.
Although E. coli 0157:117 and
Shigella can cause very similar
illnesses, shigellosis is an
infection of humans only. It is
transmitted
through
contamination of food or water
with human feces, or from direct
exposure to human waste.
Exposure to cattle or other
animals or eating undercooked
meat is not a source of
shigellosis.
Shigellosis spreads very easily
within households and child care
facilities, particularly when there
a”e diaper-age children. Some
persons shed this organism even
when they are not ill. The only
way to prevent infection is to
always wash hands well with
warm water and soap after using
the toilet, after changing diapers,
and before preparing food. By
law, persons who develop
shigellosis may not attend child
care or work as food handlers
until stool exams indicate that
their infections have ended.
From 1993 through 1997, an
average of 171 cases of
shigellosis
were
reported
annually in Oregon. Many cases
go undiagnosed and unreported.

Recipe Wranglers

On Oct. 23, the Recipe Wran
glers had its first meeting this 4-H
year. Leaders this year are Robin
Jones. Mary Jean Meyer and
Karen Temple.
The club met at the fair annex
and elected officers. Elected
were: president. Jackie Meyer;
vice-president and treasurer,
Brianne Jones; secretary, Jan-
nicka McGuire; reporter. Kristal
Temple; and callers. Cory and Jes
sica McGuire.
Plans for the coming year were
discussed, including a pizza party .
The club agreed that they would
like to serve another meal to the
multi-purpose building workmen in
November.
