Mustangs undisputed leader in CBC league
with win over Culver
By Molly Rh«a
The
Heppner
Mustangs
continued on their undefeated
march as the undisputed leader
in
the
Columbia
Basin
Conference as they kenneled the
visiting Culver Bulldogs 13-15,
15-4, 15-4, on Saturday,
October 24.
The junior varsity match was a
yawner with Heppner winning
15-6, 15-1. The Mustangs were
down 1-4 in game one when
Trisha Adams went back to
score four points and take a lead
that the Heppner girls never
relinquished.
The second game was even
quieter. The Mustangs were
ahead 3-1 when Abby Kahl, the
Mustang's fifth server, went
back to score points four
through eight. Allison Sykes,
the next Mustang server,
finished it up, scoring Heppner's
final seven points, five o f those
from aces.
Sykes was a perfect 7/7, Kahl,
9/10, and Adams 4/4 for the
match. Although the JVs were
unable to get much hitting in
due to poor serve return, Amy
Drake was marked for three
kills.
If the JV games were dull, the
varsity more than made up for it
as their match went into three
games before the Mustangs
were able to chain the Bulldogs.
In game one the Mustangs had
an 8-2, then a 12-6 point lead,
from consistent serving and
powerful hitting when the
Bulldogs hit the end o f their
leash and started to fight back.
Culver narrowed the lead to
three, 12-9, when both teams
went into a scoring drought as
nine servers put up the ball
without any resulting score.
Jill Barber aced point 13 for
the Mustangs, but 6' Bulldog,
Mandi Talbott, smashed down a
kill on her next serve to claim
the side out. Culver scored
points 10 and 11 off front row
Talbott kills then lost the
possession with a serve into the
net. Talbott hit for another kill
on the Mustangs' next serve to
send the ball back to the
Bulldogs. Culver scored points
12 and 13 off Mustang
mistakes,
then
committed
another service error to hand the
ball back to the Mustangs who
were unable to capitalize with
any further score.
It took
Culver three more serve
rotations to win game one, 13-
15.
Every server that Heppner sent
behind the line scored in game
two with Brooke Boyer starting
them off scoring the first point
off Casey Ingraham's kill, and
acing point two before Talbott
pounded down her third effort.
Janelle Healy denied the
Bulldogs service attempt by
smashing down a kill to reclaim
the serve. Jaci Hughes then
scored Heppner's third point
with help from an Ingraham
kill. Her next attempt was
rebuffed by a Bulldog kill.
Culver was able to score their
first point off a kill, then Healy
tipped one down to grab back
the possession. Healy scored
Heppner's fourth point off a
wide hit, then Culver was
awarded the side out but was
unable to score when Amber
Peck spiked the ball for a kill.
Barber scored points five and
six with an Ingraham kill and a
block, then Heppner lost the
possession with a ceiling
penalty.
The Bulldogs were able to put
up their second point off a
Mustang
penalty
before
relinquishing
the
ball.
Ingraham then went back to
jump serve Heppner’s points
seven through 13 before serving
into the net. The Bulldogs
managed to’put in points three
and four before Amy Drake
smashed down a kill of her own
to claim side out for Heppner.
Peck went on to score point 14
and 15 for the Mustangs to win
the second game, 15-4.
The Bulldogs grabbed a 0-2
lead in the final game before
Drake stuffed a ball to claim
Mustang side out. Healy scored
Heppner's first point, then
Culver earned side out. Drake
jumped up and killed the ball on
the Bulldogs' next serve attempt
to claim the ball for Heppner
again.
Hughes
scored
Heppner's second point off a
wide hit, then net served to hand
Culver the ball.
The game's next three servers
were unable to score, then Peck
went back to serve up Mustang
point three through nine, with
two of those marking as Healy
kills, before giving it up to the
net. The Bulldog's next server
scored two more points before
Ingraham hit for a kill, then
went back to jump serve the
Mustangs' final six points, acing
10, scoring 11 off a Healy block
stuff, point 12 off a double
block from Boyer and Drake,
and acing 13, 14 and 15, to pull
down another 15-4 win for the
match.
The Mustangs racked up an
excellent service with 93
percent service success for the
match with both of their setters,
Boyer (10/10) and Barber (8/8),
serving 100 percent, while
Ingraham successfully put in
16/17, Peck went 14/15, Hughes
was 9/10 and Healy served 8/9.
Almost every Mustang was
marked for at least one kill off
spikes, tips or blocks, with
Ingraham totalling nine for the
match, Healy working the net
for eight and Drake adding four.
Casey Ingraham's heavy
hitting and serving, as she was
marked for four kills and seven
points (four of which were aces)
in game two alone, turned the
tide and the Mustangs were
able to sustain their momentum
into the third game to remain
undefeated in league play.
The Mustangs went over to
Athena on Tuesday, October 27,
for their final game before the
district tournament on Saturday,
October 31, to be hosted by
Wahtonka in The Dalles.
Heppner will face the Columbia
Basin Conference western
division
leader,
Sherman
County, in the first match to
determine
the
district
championship and the first seed
into the state tournament.
Divisional second place teams,
Weston-McEwen and Culver,
will then play a "loser-out"
match for the privilege to play
the loser of the first match. The
winner of this final match will
determine the CBC's second
seed going into the state
tournament. ’
The
OSAA
2A
State
Volleyball Tournament will
take place November 12-14 at
Lane Community College in
Eugene.

Varsity, JV teams beat Stanfield
By Molly Rhea
The three Mustang volleyball
teams again hosted Stanfield on
Thursday, October 22. The
Tigers stunned the Heppner Cs
by taking that match in three
games, while the varsity and
junior varsity won their matches
in two games.
In game one the Mustang
varsity tied up the game at five
apiece, then went on to lead for
the rest of the contest and win,
15-8.
The second game was all
Mustangs as the Heppner
servers
aced nine of the
Greg Walden
pholo by Joyce Hughes
for

required 15 points to take the
match, 15-2.
Kim Pointer and Janelle Healy
lead the hitting with four kills
for the match.
Jill Barber
served 13/14 to score 10 points
in the two game match.
The junior varsity won their
match in two games also, 15-12
15-6.
The Mustang JV found
themselves battling back from a
five point, 3-8 deficit in game
one. Trisha Adams aced point
five and went on to score points
six and seven, Stephanie Clough
scored point eight on a penalty
and aced nine to put the
Mustangs up by one.
The
Tigers tied the score at nine,
then each team scored another
to knot it at 10.
The Mustangs were up 11-10
when Stanfield got the ball on a
service error and went ahead,
11-12, before Amy Drake
stopped their push with a kill.
Macy Rhea went back to score
the last four points to take the
win.
The JV Mustangs were in a 3-
6 hole in the second game when
Rhea went back to score the
final 12 points for the game and
the match. Rhea was a perfect
15/15 for the match, while Leah
Denton was marked for six kills
off the net from hits or tips.
The Heppner Cs were never
able to pull their whole game
together as they went down in a
close, three-game match, 13-15,
15-7, 13-15. In both of the
games that Heppner dropped,
the Mustangs seemingly had the
Tigers on a leash with an 8-to-2
point lead before they allowed
Stanfield to get back into the
game for the win.
