Historical Society holds meeting Klamath offers common

Morrow County Historical So­
ciety meeting was held recently
at the Lexington Grange Hall.
After the turkey dinner, a busi­
ness meeting was held. Harold
Peck was voted in by the direc­
tors as an honorary member. New
directors elected were Diane
Kincaid and Fran Barnett of lone.
The next board meeting will be
held in the north end of the county.
The county court members
present were introduced and
thanked for their courtesies over
the past year and those running
for office were introduced.
A report was heard on the trip
last year to the coast and a visit to
see Keiko. Memberships were
available for both local and state.
A report on the wagon trail was
heard and plans for the planned
celebration of the Lewis and Clark
trail in 2003 was discussed.
Reports were heard on the
museum and on the unmarked
grave sites. The committee for
this project is Louis Carlson and
Jean Nelson.
Recognized as the oldest mem­
ber present was Mrs. T.E. Mes­
senger. Traveling farthest were
Don Campbell at 190 miles and
field service representative Rick
Read from Portland at 210 miles.
Century Farm awards, both
state and local, were presented to
Tony and Martha Doherty , and the
Oscar Peterson Farm.
The program was presented by
Joy Christianson, who had an in­
teresting program and diaries from
one-room schoolhouse teachers.
She also entertained with mouth
harp musical selections and told
stories of early cowgirls and life
in a log cabin and dugouts. Sage,
her dog. was introduced.

from the Storm", which assists
victims of domestic violence.

fumiture-and also helped a
needy client with yard work.

tests at OHSU, is reported to be
doing well and his prognosis
good. Kemp said Tuesday that
Mollahan is expected to be back
in Morrow County shortly and

Ione youth group
plans food drive
The Ione Youth Group will go
door to door in Ione Halloween
night to collect nonperishable
food items for the Neighborhood
Center.
The collected food
will
be
used
by
the
Neighborhood Center to make
Thanksgiving food baskets for
the needy of South Morrow
County.

Kids participate in safety program
Navy Seaman Don H.
Huffman, son of Donald and
LuAnn Huffman of Boardman,
recently graduated from the
Basic
Enlisted
Submarine
Course at the Naval Submarine
School in Groton, Conn.
During the five-week course,
Huffman learned the basic
theory,
construction,
and
operation of nuclear-powered
submarines.
Huffman also
learned shipboard organization,
damage control and submarine
safety and escape procedures.
Huffman participated in hands-
on
training
with
reality
simulators, practicing fire­
fighting and flood control on
board a submarine. Huffman
also learned about a submarine's
basic hydraulic, water and air
systems and practiced escaping
from a simulated sinking
submarine.
With nearly 50 percent of the
Navy's ships and submarines
deployed at any given time,
Huffman will spend roughly a
quarter of his first enlistment at
sea. • q
The 1997 graduate of
Riverside High School joined
the Navy in May 1998.

said an Auxiliary spokesperson.

Homeschoolers at fire hall
During the last few weeks,
approximately 100 elementary
school children from Heppner in
grades one through five have
participated in a series of safety
presentations known as Kids
Aware/Beware.
Members of the Heppner Police
Participants receive free
dictionaries and treats.
The programs have been
sponsored in part by Oregon
Together and Morrow County
Commission on Children and
Families.

Department and the Oregon
Trail Library District have
presented the programs.
Thursday, October 15, 38 home
schoolers had their turn inside
the Heppner Fire Station.

Legion Auxiliary holds meeting
The Ione American Legion
Auxiliary met October 6 at
Beecher's Restaurant.
Final plans were made for the
traveling food sale on October
30 beginning at 11 a.m.
The Auxiliary ladies will sell
lunch on election day, Tuesday,
Nov. 3.

John Mollahan in good condition
after undetermined illness
Candidate for Morrow County
Judge, John Mollahan was
transported
to
Pioneer
Memorial Hospital and then
airlifted to Oregon Health
Sciences University Monday
night
following
an
undetermined illness.
According to Marcia Kemp, a
member
of
Mollahan's

The accompanist for the
performance will be Barbara
Nelson of Pendleton.
Admission to the recital is free.
EOU students volunteer
in community
Fifteen Eastern Oregon
University (EOU) students
donated a day's labor to a local
community support service
during
orientation
week
exercises-instead of bicycling,
hiking or attending a geology
field trip.
The opportunity to do
community volunteer work was
offered to incoming EOU
students as an optional activity
for Monday, Sept. 21. Twelve
new students and three EOU
has announced that its board of
directors has authorized the
repurchase of up to 1,983,353
shares of its common stock,
which represents approximately
20 percent of its outstanding
shares as of June 30.
The repurchase will be made
through a "Modified Dutch
Auction Tender." Under this
procedure,
