Mustangs rebound to dominate Huskies
Tim Dickenson helps out on a defensive play against Sherman
By Rick Paullus
After falling behind early, 7-0,
the
Heppner
Mustangs
rebounded to score 41 straight
points to defeat the visiting
Sherman County Huskies, 41-21,
on Friday, Oct. 16. The win in
the last regular season home
• game improved the Mustangs'
Columbia Basin Conference
record to three and one and their
overall record to four and three.
The win kept Heppner in second
place behind league-leading
Culver.
The Mustangs' game with
Stanfield scheduled for Friday,
Oct. 23, has been cancelled
because Stanfield has only 11
players.
Sherman County took the
opening kick-off and marched
down the field only to miss a 33-
yard field goal. After picking up
a first down on an eight yard run
by Craig Scott, the Mustangs
were held and had to punt.
Taking over at midfield,
Sherman
continued
their
domination on the ground as Josh
MacNab ran for a 37-yard
touchdown.
Luke Scoggins
kicked the extra point to give the
Huskies a 7-0 lead with 3:43 left.
The Mustangs came right back
in less than a minute to score
their first touchdown on a 58-
yard touchdown pass from Ryan
Matteson to Tim Dickenson.
Blake Knowles kicked the extra
point to make it 7-7 with 2:45
left in the first quarter.
Sherman County drove down to
the 31 of Heppner before
fumbling
the
ball
which
Dickenson recovered for the
Mustangs.
Behind the running of Levi
Geer and Derek Gunderson, the
Mustangs drove to the 38 of
Sherman County where the
Mustangs had their only fumble
of the game which the Huskies
recovered.
The defense held to force a
punt by the Huskies which
Gunderson returned 68 yards for
a touchdown. Picking up a good
block from Casey Evans,
Gunderson tight-roped the last 15
yards and dove the last of the run
tojust get into the end zone. The
kick was no good so the
Mustangs led 13-7 with 8:35 left
in the first half.
Sherman County came right
back and drove to the four yard
line of Heppner and looked like
they were going to go in for the
tie, but Dickenson intercepted a
pass in the end zone to kill the
drive.
The Mustangs were unable to
do anything and were forced to
punt as the first half came to a
close with Heppner leading, 13-
7.
Craig Scott returned the
second half kick-off to the 39 of
Heppner to give the Mustangs a
good field position. On third and
10, Matteson hit Dickenson for
19 yards and a first down.
Gunderson ran for four yards and
a screen pass to Geer picked up
nine more. A holding penalty
took the ball back to the 40-yard
line. Scott ran for 20 yards, then
six more and an offsides penalty
made it first and goal inside the
10 yard line. Gunderson ran for
six yards and Geer took it inside
the one, before an offside penalty
on the Mustangs took it back to
the five. Matteson then kept the
ball around end for the
touchdown.
The two-point
conversion pass failed and the
Mustangs led 19-7 with 6:55 left
in the third quarter.
Playing much better defense,
the Mustangs forced the Huskies
to punt, giving Heppner the ball
at their own 34-yard line.
Gunderson took a swing pass
from Matteson for 40 yards to
the 26 of Sherman County. Geer
then ran for three and then four
yards and Scott ran for nine yards
to the 10.
Scott then ran the
final 10 yards for the touchdown.
Matteson ran in the two-point
conversion to make it 27-7
Heppner with 3:22 left in the
third.
The Mustangs' defense again
held and forced a punting
situation for the Huskies. A bad
snap on the punt and good hustle
by Evans and Knowles tackled
the punter at the 27-yard line.
Scott then broke loose for 23
yards to the four. Matteson then
hit Evans for a four yard
touchdown pass.
Knowles
kicked the extra point to make it
34-7 with 1:48 left in the third.
Sherman County took over at
their own 25 after the kick-off
and the Mustangs' defense, which
held the Huskies to minus 22
yards in the third quarter, again
forced the punt. The Mustangs
got good field position at the 45
of the Huskies.
Scott ran for nine yards but a
motion penalty brought up a third
and six. Matteson then hit Jared
Eckman for 30 yards to start the
fourth
quarter.
Michael
Schonbachler then ran six yards
for
the
Mustangs’
final
touchdown. Knowles' kick was
good to give the Mustangs a 41 -7
lead with 11:31 left in the game.
Sherman County then got their
offense back and drove down to
the 18 of the Mustangs but
Gunderson intercepted a pass in
the end zone to give the
Mustangs the ball at their own
20.
The Mustangs were unable to
move the ball and were forced to
punt. The Huskies took over at
their own 26 and, going against
mostly the JV defense, drove
down and scored on a Keith
Christianson
14-yard
run.
Scoggins kicked the extra point
to make the score 41-14 with
2:50 left.
Michael McCabe got a nice
return on the kick-off to give the
Mustangs good field position at
their own 46.
The offense then were forced to
give the ball back to Sherman
County. With time running out,
Asa Richelderfer hit Justin Miller
for a 32-yard touchdown pass.
Scoggins kick made the final
score 41-21.
The defense, which gave up
120 yards in the first quarter
before stiffening, was led by Levi
Geer with 21 defensive points.
Tim Dickenson had 20 points
with a fumble recovery and an
interception. Derek Gunderson
had
16 points with
an
interception. Jake Roy had 15
points and Blake Knowles and
Craig Scott each had 14. Casey
Evans and Matt Baker each had
12 points and Jared Eckman had
11 points.
Scott led all rushers with 92
yards on 10 carries and a
touchdown. Geer had 21 yards
on seven carries and Gunderson
had 19 yards on four carries.
Michael Schonbachler ran four
.times for 13 yards and a
touchdown.
Ryan Matteson completed
seven of 10 passes for 164 yards
and two touchdowns and no
interceptions.
Dickenson had two receptions
for 77 yards and a touchdown.
Gunderson had two receptions
for 44 yards.

Mustang VB squads sweep Sherman County
By Molly Rhoa
The Heppner volleyball teams
made the long road trip to Moro
on Saturday, October 17, and
chalked up another three team
sweep over the Sherman County
Huskies.
In what proved to be their
most exciting match so far this
year, the Mustang varsity net
squad beat the Huskies, 15-8,
15-13.
Heppner trailed 1-5 in the first
game when Casey Ingraham
went back to serve. Ingraham's
jump serve changed the tempo
of the game and had the
Huskies totally intimidated as
she aced five points before
going out the back. Sherman
County tied the score at six, but
Amy Drake cancelled the next
point attempt by blocking 5'11",
Talia Sanderson's spike attempt.
Brooke Boyer served the
Mustang's seventh point with
the kill coming from Kim
Pointer.
The Huskies gained the side
out and were able to score two
points before Drake smashed
down a kill. Janelle Healy gave
the Mustangs a solid lead,
serving up points eight through
13. Jill Barber scored point 14
when Ingraham blocked the
spike off of hard hitting, 6'1",
Amy Richelderfer. Barber then
put over the game point for the
win.
Although the Mustangs carried
the momentum into game two,
they had to work hard for the
victory, as the Huskies never
allowed Heppner to string
together more than three points
at a time. The Mustangs had a
3-1 lead with points coming
from Barber, Amber Peck and
Ingraham, when the Huskies
were able to use two servers and
gain a 3-6 advantage.
Barber scored point four with
Boyer bouncing a hit off the
Husky blockers, point five off
an Ingraham kill and aced the
sixth point to bring the
Mustangs even.
Sherman County scored their
seventh point off a kill before
serving out the back.
The
Huskies thwarted Peck's point
attempt with a Richelderfer kill,
only to have their next serve
silenced with kill from Healy.
Ingraham aced point seven and
eight with her powerful jump
serve, and scored the ninth with
a successful tip from Boyer.
The Huskies scored again to
bring the score within one point,
then Boyer threaded the double
block for a kill to gain the side
out.
Boyer served up the
Mustang's 10th point off a jump
serve, but her next attempt went
wild. The Huskies scored again
to bring the margin back to one,
then lost the serve with a
penalty.
Healy scored point 11, then 12
with Barber tipping down for a
kill, before Sherman County got
the side out call.
The Huskies were able to post
points 10 and 11 off kills by
Richelderfer before serving one
into the net.
Heppner was
unable to score on their attempt
and the Huskies went ahead 13-
12 with Richelderfer blocking
the Mustangs' spike attempts
down.
Heppner gained
possession with a missed serve
and Barber took the opportunity
to tie the score with help from a
tip-kill from Boyer and point 14
off an Ingraham kill.
Sherman County gained the
side out on a Richelderfer kill,
but failed to score when
Ingraham shanked a hit off a
Richelderfer block to take back
the ball. With a one-point
advantage Peck stepped back
and served up game point to
keep the Mustangs undefeated
in league play.
"The girls stayed relaxed and
stuck with our game," said
coach Tern Gentry. "I am
really pleased with how the
girls played."
Setters Boyer and Barber
again demonstrated their talent
as they were able to target sets
to every position. Along with
kills being recorded for nearly
every player, Heppner’s service
success was an incredible 93
percent for the match.
The Mustangs played at Pilot
Rock on Tuesday, October 20,
will host Stanfield again on
Thursday, October 22, and then
face off with the Culver
. Bulldogs on Saturday, October
24, in Heppner's gym. Culver is
tied with Sherman County for
the lead in the CBC eastern
division, and this could prove to
be another great match to
watch.
The Heppner JVs took their
match in two games, 15-11, 15-
10. The Mustangs had a 14-7
advantage in game one, but
allowed the Huskies within
three before putting the game
away.
Heppner held a 3-0 lead after
their first server in game two,
then the Huskies used their next
four servers to tie it up. The
Mustangs grabbed back the
advantage and never looked
back as they galloped to yet
another victory.
The JVs played Pilot Rock on
Tuesday, will meet up with
Stanfield on Thursday, and then
plan to revenge their only loss
of the season when they host the
LaGrande JVs on Friday,
October 23, before taking on the
Culver Bulldogs on Saturday.
The Heppner Cs easily took
their match, winning 15-1, 15-6,
using only one and a half
rotations per game.
The Mustang Cs played Pilot
Rock on Tuesday, and will then
see action again on Friday,
October 23, when they host the
LaGrande C team. The Cs lead
off the action against Culver on
Saturday, October 24.
Colts defeat Stanfield, 24-12
By Rick Paullus
In a battle of unbeaten teams,
the Heppner Colts came out on
top of Stanfield, 24-12, on
Wednesday, Oct. 14, at Stanfield.
The win improved the Colts'
record to six and 0 to end the
regular season.
The first round of the play-offs
will be held in Hermiston on
Wednesday, Oct. 21, with the
championship game set for
Saturday, Oct. 24.
The Colts will have a rematch
with Stanfield on Wednesday in
Hermiston.
Les Schwab and
Wal-Mart will play in the other
semi-final game.
The Colts' defense set the tone
early by holding Stanfield on
downs on their first possession.
The Colts then marched down
the field and scored their first
touchdown on a bootleg around
left end by Jode Coil for 18
yards. David Flynn kicked the
extra point and the Colts led 8-0
after the first quarter.
With the clock winding down
towards halftime, Coil found
Kory Paullus open and Paullus
outran the defenders to the end
zone for a 62-yard touchdown
pass. Flynn's extra point kick
into the wind was perfect, giving
the Colts a 16-0 halftime lead.
The Colts took the ball to begin
the third quarter and getting key
runs for first downs by J.C.
Sherritt and Tyler Boyer,
marched the ball down the field.
The drive was capped by a Coil
to Brandon Seitz seven yard
touchdown pass. Flynn booted
the extra point throi gh, giving
the Colts a 24-0 lead after three
quarters.
Stanfield scored two fourth
quarter touchdowns, the last with
:02 left, to make the final score
24-12.

We
witnessed
another
Mustang runaway on Tuesday,
October 13, as the hosting
Heppner Mustang volleyball
teams trampled the Stanfield
Tigers.
The varsity Mustangs won
their match in two quick, 15-1,
15-7, games. Jill Barber aced
Heppner's first point to set the
tone for the game.
The
Mustangs used only four servers
to put game one away as the
Tigers struggled to even put the
ball into play.
Game two started much the
same with Brooke Boyer acing
the first two points.
After
allowing Stanfield to tie the
score at two, Janelle Healy went
back to score six points and put
Heppner ahead for good.
"It was difficult to put together
much hitting with Stanfield
having trouble even returning
out serves," said coach Terri
Gentry. "But it was good to be
able to get everyone into the
game."
The Mustang JVs collared the
Tigers in two games, 15-1, 15-
12. Game one was a three
server game with Katie Shemtt
starting off Heppner's scoring
with two aces. Then Amy
Drake went back next to rack up
the next nine points. Trisha
Adams wrapped it up by
serving point 12 through 15.
In game two the Tigers went
ahead 4-9 before the Mustangs
reared back and Allison Sykes
scored points six through 10 to
gain a one point lead. The score
was tied at 10 and again at 12
before Macy Rhea went back to
score the final three points and
put the match away.
The Heppner Cs also took care
of their match in two games,
15-10. 15-3.
The young
Mustangs had trouble getting
their first game together as they
needed two and a half full
rotations to finally tame the
Tigers for game one.
Game two was a whole
different story. Heppner was up
3-0 when Julie Proctor went
behind the service line and was
evidently "unretumable" as she
furnished points four through
14. Stanfield was able to post
three
points
before
the
Mustangs scored game point to
take the match.
