Cardinals sleepwalk through
tourney; still take second

The lone Cardinals were tired,
but they still managed second
place at the Condon Invitational
Tournament, Sept. 12.
lone was devastated by their
lack of sleep, due to the bus
troubles that kept them in Prairie
City the night before till 12:30
a.m.
It all began with a loss to
Condon. The Blue Devils, not
lacking anything from last year's
season, pounded lone in two
short games.
The second game was a
different story; the Cardinals
seemed to show some kind of
life. Junior Camie Burrighi had
94 percent serves, serving three
aces and scoring a total of 14
points. Burright also lead in
spiking with five kills and four
spikes.
lone pulled that game off,
winning 15-12, 15-10.
The Cards finished the
tournament off with a 16-14, 15-
8 win over the Wahtonka Eagles.
Erin Crowell led the way for
the Cardinals, scoring nine
points. Crowell and Chanssa
Gates proved to be excellent
setters, having a total of 24
perfect sets between them. Katie
Tworek dominated the back row,
digging up every ball that came
her way.
The Cardinals have a tough
tournament ahead of them at
Wahtonka next Saturday.
lone stomps Cougars
Tigers terrorize Cards

At the end of the fourth quarter
in the Cardinal football game
against the Prescott Tigers, the
score looked bad for lone. Even
though Adam Neiffer had a 75
yard return for a touch-down, it
wasn’t enough for a win. The
Cardinals lost to the Tigers, 44-
12, in the 1A preseason football
game Friday, September 18.
lone was wrought with injuries
early in the season which
resulted in them playing four
freshmen
"I thought we had a good game
despite the loss of four junior
players out for injunes. We had
several chances for some big
plays, but failed to hook up on
some passes," says coach Robin
Graff.
Prescott got on the board first
with 8:17 left on the clock in the
first quarter. No one else scored
that quarter. But in the second
quarter Korey Morgan came
back with a 16-yard run for a
touchdown,
putting
the
Cardinals on the board 8-6, still
Prescott's lead.
lone had a number of
interceptions throughout the
game. The second ended with
two more runs from Prescott's
Zane Gray, but the run failed.
They came back with a 55-yard
interception by Nick Tompkins,
to give Prescott 22 points on the
board. lone fumbled the ball but
recovered it to end the second
quarter, 22-6, with Prescott in
the lead.
In the third quarter Tim Murry
made a 13-yard run to give
Prescott a 24-pomt lead over
lone, 30-6. In the fourth quarter
lone made a punt block to get
the ball back but they had to turn
it over to Prescott. Brian
Lindstrom then had a pass
connection to Brett Mayberry,
which led to a score with one
minute left in the fourth.
Prescott then kicked the ball to
Adam Neiffer, who ran the ball
75 yards for a touchdown.
Brad Burright again broke the
100-yard barrier for the third
consecutive game. A. Neiffer
also ran over 200 yards.
"We look forward to a good
week of practice and getting a
few guys off of the injury list. A
lot of the younger kids got some
experience these last few games.
We start league this week, and
we should do pretty good
season," said head coach Robin
Graff.

Friday, Oct. 25, at Echo at 7:30
p.m..
IMS downs Shermän

lone's volleyball game against
the Echo Cougars ended in a win
for lone, 15-4, 15-1.
Katie Tworek scored eight of
the total points in the first
quarter of the first game.
Tworek again made eight of the
total points for the second game.
Erin Crowell made six points
and Nikki McElligott made one.
Friday's JV volleyball game
against the Echo JV team started
out slow . At one point the game
had a score of 0 to 11 in the
Cougars' favor. The lone JVs
made a tremendous comeback
however, with Amellia Peck
making seven points, Salli
McElligott making three, Shelby
Krebs, three, and Jeanette
Brantley, two more, to out-score
the Cougars and take the game,
15 to 11.
In the second game, the
Cougars scored nine points
before lone made a comeback.
Adrienne Swanson made six
points, and Samantha Wilhelm,
Nonnee Walters and Salli
McElligott each made three
points to win the game, 15-9,
and the match.
Tworek said: "I was surprised.
I heard they were tough, but I
guess we caught them off
guard."
Baker on deployment
Navy Airman Joseph R. Baker,
son of Robin L. Baker of lone,
and Robert Baker, Cecil, is
currently halfway through a six-
month deployment to the
Western Pacific Ocean, Indian
Ocean and Arabian Gulf aboard
the aircraft carrier USS Abraham
Lincoln.
Baker is one of more than
5,000 Sailors and Marines aboard
the Ship which departed its
home port of Everett, Wash., to
lead the USS Abraham Lincoln
Battle Group. The battle group is
comprised of 10 tactical air
squadrons,
five
surface
combatants and two Submarines.
During the deployment. Baker
and crew members have had the
opportunity to visit Hong Kong,
Singapore and the United Arab
Emirates.
While in Hong Hong, Sailors
and Marines from Baker's ship
participated in Project Handclasp
providing humanitarian aid to a
disaster relief organization, a
school
for
the
mentally
handicapped and an international
Christian school. In addition to
providing food, hygienic items
toys, books and paper to the
recipients, members of Baker's
ship cleaned, repaired and
painted buildings.
Aircraft carriers, like USS
Abraham Lincoln, are forward
deployed around the world to
maintain a U.S. presence and
provide rapid response in times
of crisis. They serve as a highly
visible deterrent to would-be
aggressors and, if deterrence
fails, offer the most versatile and
powerful weapons available, said
a newsrelease.
The 1996 graduate of lone
High School joined the Navy in
June 1996.
Singspiration at First Christian
The First Christian Church will
sponsor Singspiration this month
on Sunday, October 11, at 7
p.m. at the church at 293 N. Gale
in Heppner.
This service is community wide
and all the area churches are
invited to "come and praise the
Lord in worship and song".
Anyone who would like to sing
a special is welcome to do so as
well.
Everyone is invited to attend.
Cookies, coffee and finger foods
will be served following the
service.

Sherman at lone Friday, Sept. 18,
20 - 6 .
It was a six-point game until
the end of the fourth quarter,
when Andrew Rietmann ran a
68- yard touchdown.
lone had to kick off to Sherman
County. After Sherman County's
fourth down, lone had the ball.
Rietmann ran an 18-yard
touchdown and scored the first
goal of the game with Koby Rea
squeezing in a two-point
conversion.
Sherman came back two plays
later with a score and then
missed
their
two-point
conversion.
In the beginning of the second
quarter Cayle Krebs and Billy
Gates had a beautiful assisted
sack. At halftime the score was
14-6 with lone in the lead.
At the beginning o f the third
quarter, the game slowed down
and the two teams made very
little progress. Then towards the
end of the third quarter Sherman
had an 87-yard touchdown run
that was called back do to a
clipping call, which set them
back 15 yards and put them at
the 10 yard line.
They started the fourth quarter
with a tremendous defense that
caused them to punt. They put
lone on the two-yard line. Then
Andrew Rietmann ran a 98 yard
touchdown run. This put lone
ahead 20-6 and Sherman did not
have enough time to catch up.
"This team knows how to play
like a team," said coach Dean
Robinson. Mike Radie, lone
Cardinals' fullback said, "It's
been a long time since we beat
Sherman County and it was a
great feeling."
IMS strikes honkers

The lone Middle School
football team overwhelmed the
Arlington Honkers at Arlington,
60-40, Friday afternoon, Oct. 2.
Due to the loss of players the
Honkers had to play six-man
football.
In the first series of downs
Andrew Rietmann ran in a
touchdown for the Cardinals.
Rietmann
scored
three
touchdowns that game as well as
one two-point conversion. Mike
Radie scored two touchdowns
throughout the game.
In the fourth quarter Paul
Neiffer fumbled, but luckily
Cayle Krebs picked it up,
smashed the line and got the
’’Journey of Faith” to begin
St. Patrick's Parish is beginning
a "Journey O f Faith" for those
interested in learning more about
the Catholic Church.
This group will consider basic
truths, sacraments and the
commandments. They will meet

Salli McElligott, who served
over 10 points, followed by
Jeanette Brantley with six. S.
McElligott also led in spikes and
kills. The Cardinals received
tremendous setting by S.
McElligott
and
Adrienne
Swanson helped them to send
over six kills to defeat the
Loggers.
Coach Cathy McCabe said,
"This looks to be one of our top
JV teams we've had for a few
years.
They
showed
an
outstanding amount of hustle
and enthusiasm."
The JVs will play at Prairie City
on September 11 at 4 p.m.
The Willow Creek Park District
Board meeting will be held
Wed., Oct. 21, at 7 p.m. at lone
city hall.

time change.
The board will not meet at
their regular time of 7:30 p.m.,
but instead will meet for a board
work session beginning at 7 p.m.

begin at 8 p.m. at Heppner High
School.

grade string was put in to
increase their playing experience
as well as seventh-grade
quarterback Paul Neiffer. Miss-
tackles caused IMS to let
Arlington score. Number 22 for
Arlington proved to be an
amazing runner and awesome
tackier.
This win put lone at 2-0 for the
1998 season with just four
games left to play. Their next
game will be hosted by lone as
ithey take on St. Mary’s.
