Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, September 30, 1998 Sheriff's Report The Morrow County Sheriffs Office (MCSO) reports handling the following business during the past weeks: Sept. 9: MCSO received a re port of theft of services from the N ugget Inn in Roardman. A woman left owing $158.77. MCSO received a report of an apartm ent broken into at the Outback Apts, in Boardman. The managers were not aware of any problems. Thomas Hammon, 32, was found guilty of Theft II and sen tenced to three years probation. MCSO received a report of a 911 call from a little boy with sounds of a domestic dispute in the background in Irrigon. A woman who was contacted said she was upset but everything was okay. No units were available to check the situation out. Oregon State Police arrested Robert Craig Maker, 22, on a warrant for Burglary I. Maker was transported to the Umatilla County Sheriff s Office (UCSO) jail, but was released due to over crowding. MCSO dispatched to the Boardman Police Dept, a report of a lost wallet at Sentry Market in Boardman. A boy found it and wouldn’t give it back. The boy later brought it back. MCSO dispatched to the Hepp ner Police Dept, a report of a sus picious pickup across from the Morrow County Fairgrounds en trance in Heppner. MCSO dispatched to the Or egon State Police a report of two suspicious males on foot by a resi dence on Blackhorse Canyon. Beer cans were left behind. MCSO and UCSO deputies responded to a report of an 11 year old and a 14 year old who didn’t come home from school at Columbia Junior High School. The kids were located. MCSO and UCSO deputies, Oregon State Police responded to a report of a domestic dispute in progress in Irrigon. It turned out to be in Umatilla County. Heppner Fire Dept, and fire chief responded to a report o f a fire alarm at H eppner High School. It turned out to be a false alarm. MCSO dispatched to the Hepp- Willow Creek Road update The U.S. Dept, o f Trans portation lists its planned construction activities on Willow Creek Road for the week of Monday, Sept. 28: Tidewater plans to continue working on the cut slopes above Smith Ditch and building the subgrade with some of the material from these cut slopes. They are hauling waste material to a new waste site established off the FS 53 road on FS 53-020 road. Drivers, be aware that the FS 53 road will be busy with dump truck traffic from the project, as well as the log truck traffic from the various timber sales. For those individuals that are trying to get to the Penland Lake areas, there is an alternate route to get there, by way o f FS 5321 road, then turn on the FS 2103 road to FS 2103-030 road, which is the Penland Lake Read. The contractor is utilizing excavators and dump trucks to move the waste material. Drivers on FS 53 road, please observe the flaggers and remember that they are there to help you and the operators o f the equipment. Emergency access through the project will be maintained throughout the construction season. NOTICE TO CITIZENS that utilize and enjoy the Willow Creek (Coal Mine Grade) area: Willow Creek (Coal Mine Grade) will remain closed to through traffic from Cutsforth Park to the intersection of FS roads 5350 and FS 53 for the winter season. Due to additional work on the project, the construction season has been extended into the 1999 construction season. Work during the 1998 construction season will continue until weather conditions prohibits construction activities. Presently, Willow Creek Road (Coal Mine Grade) is closed to through traffic from Cutsforth Park to the intersection of FS roads 5350 and 53. This inter section will remain open, to the logging contractor only, for the removal of timber sale material. The FS 21 road, Penland Lake Road intersection will remain open during construction activities, controlled with flaggers. Willow Creek Road remains open, to local traffic only, to Cutsforth Park. The park will remain open through the construction season. The detour route through the Shaw Creek Road to the four comers to Penland Lake and Ukiah is open for all traffic. Additional temporary signs have been placed for directions to the Penland Lake access. Please watch for logging truck traffic and observe the warning sig.is, including the speed limit, on the Shaw Creek road detour route and observe the barricades at both ends of the construction zone. Please have a safe summer and remember that the barricaded road closures are for the traveling public's safety.
