Heppner Mustangs crush Vikings, 45-6
by Rick Paullus
The Heppner Mustangs got their
first win o f the season by beating
the visiting Umatilla Vikings 45
to 6 on Friday, Sept. 11.
Senior Shane Matheny got the
scoring going early, taking the
opening kick-off 87 yards
untouched for a touchdown.
Blake Knowles kicked the extra
point and with only 13 seconds
gone in the first quarter, Heppner
•led 7-0.
Umatilla took over at their own
28 yard line after the kick-off.
On their first play Michael
Schonbachler made a juggling,
acrobatic interception.
Then it was the Derek
Gunderson show as he gained 20
yards on the first play, four yards
on the next and took it into the
end zone from three yards out for
the touchdown. Schonbachler
kicked the extra point and with
10:31 left in the first quarter, the
Mustangs led 14-0.
After taking over at their own
24, the Mustangs' defense held,
forcing a punt. The snap sailed
over the punter's head and was
recovered by Kyle McDaniel at
Umatilla's 10-yard line. On a
second and five the Vikings
picked o ff a pass, then fumbled
it, which the Mustangs recovered
at the twelve yard line and a first
down. After a one yard gain,
Levi Geer took the pitch from
Matheny on the option and ran
over a Viking defensive back and
into the end zone for a
touchdown. The kick failed and,
with 9:06 still remaining in the
first quarter, Heppner led 20-0.
The Vikings were forced to
punt on their next possession and
Matheny took the ball on a
reverse to the Umatilla 43-yard
line. Geer then ran for 22 yards.
A holding penalty took the ball
back to the 32. Matheny then
took a middle screen and with
excellent blocking, ran to the end
zone for the Mustangs' fourth
touchdown o f first quarter. The
extra point kick failed and with
6:28 left in the first, Heppner led
26-0.
Heppner's defense held and took
over on downs at their own 36.
Then it was the Schonbachler
show as he fan for 13 yards, then
six more yards. Gunderson ran
eight yards and a first down to
the 35 o f Umatilla. Schonbachler
then ran for 18 yards and on the
last play in the first quarter, took
it for five more to the 11. On the
first play o f the second quarter
Matheny hit Tim Dickenson for
an 11-yard touchdown pass. The
kick failed and the Mustangs led
32-0
The Mustangs' defense again
held and took over at their own
46. Freshman Michael McCabe
and
Travis
Bellamy
and
sophomore Matt Baker ran the
ball down to Umatilla's 29 yard
line before being stopped.
The Vikings then appeared
ready to score their first points o f
the game, driving to the
Mustangs three yard line. But a
fumble,
recovered
by
Schonbachler, gave the Mustangs
the ball at their own four-yard
line with 3:00 left in the first
half.
McCabe gave the Mustangs
some breathing room with a 21 -
yard run.
Sophomore Craig
Scott then ran six yards and
another four yards and a first
down to end the first half with
Heppner leading, 32-0.
On the Vikings first possession
o f the second half, Scott stepped
in front o f a Vikings receiver
picking o ff the pass and returned
it to the 32 o f Umatilla.
The Vikings held through and
after trading punts the Vikings
took over at their own 28-yard
line.
The Vikings then put
together their only scoring drive
capped o ff by a Mike Mclver
pass to Jeremy Ford covering 40
yards. The extra point pass was
knocked down by Scott and
Heppner now led 32-6 with 4:26
left in the third quarter.
The Mustangs took over at
their own 31 after the kick-off.
Schonbachler then ran for six
yards and then seven more and a
first down. A Matteson to Geer
pass covered 14 yards. Matteson
then hit Casey Evans for 38 yards
and a touchdown. Knowles' kick
was good and, with 2;48 left, the
Mustangs led 39-6.
On the Vikings' next
possession, Eckman picked o ff
another pass down at the
Mustangs'
one
yard
line.
McCabe gave the Mustangs a
little breathing room with runs o f
