Neighborhood Watch gets underway
A group of 20 local citizens and
the Heppner Police met on Aug.
11 to organize a Neighborhood
Watch Program in an effort to help
alleviate the crime problem in
Heppner.
M ichael Jenkins, a form er
member of the Boardman Police
Dept ., spoke to the group and pro­
vided some information on how to
establish a program, what things
to include in a successful program
and what to avoid. Several indi­
viduals volunteered to be “block
captains," w ho will coordinate the
program in their particular neigh­
borhoods and Lyle Verrall volun­
teered to coordinate the entire pro­
gram w ith the block captains and
the Heppner Police Dept.
A follow-up meeting will be
held Thursday, Sept. 3 at 7 p.m.
at the Morrow County Family
Services Center conference room,
located above the Coast to Coast
store on Mam Street. Anyone in­
terested in becoming involved with
the Neighborhood Watch Program
is invited to attend. Interested
youth are especially encouraged
to participate said a spokesperson.
