Central Oregon is rapidly ap
proaching a fire danger level equal
to the years of 1990, ’92, '94 and
'96, according to an Oregon Dept,
of Forestry news release. Those
years included Awbrey Hall, Sage
Flat, Skeleton, Wheeler Point and
the Ashwood/Donnybrook fires.
I hese five fires combined to bum
approximately 144,000 acres;
evacuation of homes was neces
sary and homes were lost. This
year, there is a much bigger grass
crop than any of the previous
years, allowing fires to spread
faster and making them more dif
ficult to control.
What does this mean to you?
The fire danger right now is ex
treme and people must be abso
lutely careful with fire. State pro
tected lands within Central Or
egon are currently m a regulated
use closure. Regulations include:
no fireworks, no smoking in the
woods, keep campfire in desig
nated areas only and carry
firefighting equipment such as a
bucket, shovel, ax and fire extin
guisher off developed state and
county roads. These public use
restrictions are designed to help
prevent fire starts. Check with
local fire agencies for debris burn
ing regulations.
“Before you got in the woods
or do anything with fire, please be
responsible and remember to call
your local fire agency for current
fire restrictions.” said the release.
